skopje··on The hardest program I've ever written (2015)
Its funny when you have programmed long enough to see the same language/app names recycled. Two examples that come to mind: Dart, which was an RTL validation scripting language in the 80's/90's used by CPU designers, and Elm, which was a mail program in Unix/Aix/SunOS in the 80's/90's. Even weirder, when googling for the "old" Dart, it referred to RTL as right-to-left, and not register transfer level.

this isn't communism: communism is an economic system. this is fascism (not even authoritarianism), which is a governing structure.

But that's not what this is because it cannot be challenged. This is just an adjustable tool to arrest anyone and fits any need.

I think it worked well for metafilter: $1/1euro one-time charge to join. But that's probably worth it to spam Arxiv with junk.

That is strange. Water is water. Delicious water. Expensive water. Filter?

skopje··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
some netgear 8-ch poe switch. i don't recall. it's been on and running for about 8 years with no issues, way up near the ceiling of my garage, covered with dust. its plugged into a wrt1900 router i bridged via wifi to my main router.
skopje··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
I never had to know the difference. I have four cctv cams on ~100ft of cat5 each. didn't have to think about it, just plugged them in and they worked.
skopje··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
yes that is something you need to decide for yourself i'm ok with it. i push my segments up to an s3 bucket but yes if they find the box before the rsync i lose. oh well. there's much more valuable stuff in the house they'll probably go for first. i suspect junkies aren't that smart.

Blue-line domes, the $240 ones. Four of them. I'd get more but do not know how to make outside routing look neat. i have one bullet and i don't like it and don't use it, i prefer the wide-angle domes with ir.

Keysight quality has suffered after the spinoff. Oh I'd go with Tek. Maybe Rohde & Schwarz but I haven't used them in 20 years they were competitive for quite some time.
skopje··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
PoE is awesome. My custom home security system is all CCTV PoE with a gstreamer backend running on four-core fanless linux box. Way to go. Complete control. No batteries, no wares spying on me, no personal data getting scraped by big guys. (Cloud connectivity sucks because I have segmented mp4s and jogging through them hurts but I only care for events after they happen, not while they happen.)
skopje··on A laser pointer at 2B FPS [video]
The triggering scheme is completely brilliant. One of those cases where not knowing too much made it possible, because someone who does analog debug would never do that (because they would have a 50k$ scope!.

skopje··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
A relative of mine lived and worked in the US for Oppenheimer Funds in the 1990's and they had their own datacenters all over the US, multiple redundancy for weather or war. But every millionaire feels entitled to be a billionaire now, so all of that cost was rolled into a single point of cloud failure.

Reminds me of a great Onion tagline:

"Plowshare hastily beaten back into sword."

skopje··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
>> Redundancy is insanely expensive especially for SaaS companies

That right there means the business model is fucked to begin with. If you can't have a resilient service, then you should not be offering that service. Period. Solution: we were fine before the cloud, just a little slower. No problem going back to that for some things. Not everything has to be just in time at lowest possible cost.

skopje··on Tinnitus Neuromodulator
My first reaction to this was, "this is dumb and annoying", and then I played with it for a few minutes and found a set of levels that were causing my symptoms to briefly go away. It still isn't perfect, but a combination of Steve Seq and Pulses High creates "gaps" in my tinnitus, where my brain seems to "forget" about it briefly and I don't hear it. But then it comes back a millisecond or so later. I don't think I could get work done with this on all day, but it has more effect on my symptoms than other websites I've tried. It's really interesting, like there are brief (millisecond) periods of no tinnitus. [I've had it in my left ear for probably 35 years (I played in a punk band in the early 80's with no hearing protection but it didn't show up until a decade later).]

Keep at it, I think you're on to something!

skopje··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
What I hate are the dozens of little doodads in the car that fail after 10 years and are no longer manufactured. Mechanical knobs on the AC, servos in the mirrors, power windows, wiper motors, window seals, heck the shifter stalk on my 2006 forester broke (thank god for chop shops). I wonder what people are referring to when they say "this car won't last 200k miles". do they mean the engine, transmission, heater, what exactly?
skopje··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
> Runs entirely on plant based biofuels

You forgot, "and pollutes like crazy."

The environmental calculus of driving a new car, versus driving a 40 year old diesel engine is challenging, I admit. Moreso if you are distilling your own fuel. I would bet that a gross polluter (as California calls them) from 40 years ago are probably a net loss compared to a 20 year old ICE today.
