we had satellite internet, we had rockets that went to the moon in 60s, electric cars are still the minority, and in 2002 somebody got partial sight back from brain implants so fuck musk and his novelty bs

Wasnt this a benefit of the semantic web we were pushing for? Standardized tags exactly for stuff like this? Just another example of the mess that web dev is - trying to coerce a markup language into a fully fledged programming language.

OP has a nice idea but hes short on technical details, which in this case is where the devil resides.

> Unless the author wanted to demonstrate that by playing with words one can prove anything.

not to be facetious but what hes doing is what most of the popular religions do - come up with your own "interpretation" or "reading" of the text. how popular would any major religion be if it was stuck with its original BCE values, ethics and beliefs? They would be dead. They must change with the times.

Why is any "reading" of the bible more valid than the next? This guy is a pastor

its cos it gets musk fanboys riled up and commenting, viewing, sharing etc. any time any of elon musk's ventures fail even in the slightest way, its fantastic news for us all. im sick of hearing hes doing anything at all for humanity because hes yet to deliver on any of his promises (forget living on mars, hes not even made it to moon yet, no tunnel under DC, no robotaxis)

>By who, and for who?

ages 0-6, increased vocabulary with increased screen time https://srcd.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cdev.13927

> My kids (ages 5+7) watch significantly less TV than their peers (as well as currently almost zero internet access), and are frequently complimented on their command of vocabulary and ability to express themselves.

Compliments are nice I suppose, but theyre a poor metric when regarding vocabulary size.

> By amount of time that people spend on the internet, it is mostly doomscrolling and ragebait. If only we could take that part of it away.

"most" people I assume doesnt include you? Youre too smart to fall for it, obviously.

Is Linus actually a good programmer though? Linux is certainly popular but he had a lot of help with it. As a person he seems prone to lashing out and childish. I doubt hed last in the real world with his attitude, the only place he could succeed is heading his own open source project

in terms of speech development, TV was found to be a massive benefit in increasing vocabulary - how are you so sure the internet (nebulously defined as that is) is detrimental to communication abilities, arent they on there talking to their friends?. And if we are talking about the internet in general and not just twitter/tiktok, then its largely NOT doomscrolling and ragebait. Hackernews (heck, every single news organisation EVER) has an "algorithm" for "increasing engagement", books are written to increase engagement, its been going on for centuries but only since social media appeared do we suddenly dislike it.
skeezyjefferson··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence

i love how screen time is only detrimental to young minds, and older minds are somehow immune to its evils.
skeezyjefferson··on Meta launches Hyperscape, technology to turn real-world spaces into VR
> Would you care to explain what you mean by "the bandwidth just isn't there"

VR needs to at least match the bleeding edge in graphics, which is desktop GPUs. Those desktop GPUs have large wattage and cooling demands. Therefore wireless VR headsets must use the mobile or laptop versions of those GPUs, which perform worse than the desktop equivalent. On top of this VR needs to draw the same scene twice (one for each eyeball). I cannot see how VR will ever overcome this with current hardware. They need to be able to put a desktop GPU in the wireless headset without needing to power it from AC, and thats just for starters because didnt Carmack say we need something like 240hz and 4k+ (for each eyeball) for indiscernible photo realism? Id say were maybe 10-20 years away from just having the GPU power to do this, let alone making software for it

skeezyjefferson··on I almost got hacked by a 'job interview'
pfft, id have balked at the google docs link in step 1... guys a nub, deserves to get hacked. and btw this is north korea its already been exposed before hows he think its news
skeezyjefferson··on Meta launches Hyperscape, technology to turn real-world spaces into VR
remember even back THEN, they said VR would change how we work. I guess its just a common misconception we keep making
skeezyjefferson··on Meta launches Hyperscape, technology to turn real-world spaces into VR
we are decades away. its why carmack quit to pursue other avenues. the chasm between the state of the art (gaming) and where VR currently is (essentially, mobile) is too big not seem shitty in comparison. The then-recent proliferation of Arm and SoC made the industry think it was possible, they even convinced Carmack, but the bandwidth just isnt there. The innovation required on the software side is massive - so theyll just wait for hardware to get better.

> The poor avaialbility was largely due to the great pricing:

the poor availability was because they didnt make enough. they blame supply chain issues around covid. in the time they were complaining that it wasnt their fault, competitors like the esp32 started appearing and taking market share. i was totally put off the rpi because of that saga. its no longer a good deal, there are better options in either direction (more microcontrollery or more power)
