sk2code··on Ask HN: Tech/Dev meetups in NYC over the next ten days?
I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but as far as NYC tech events are concerned this should be relevant enough - http://betabeat.com/2012/12/best-tech-events-this-week-happy...

Though I am not in NYC but I often visit BetaBeat and this is something which I've remembered.

Hope this helps. Have fun in Big Apple.

sk2code··on Ask HN: What tech/programming languages will continue to dominate in 2013?
As far as technology is concerned, I am really looking forward to 3D printing. I am interested in seeing how 3D printing will be commercialized and what difference it can make (if any).

Here you go my friend: http://www.academicearth.org/courses/machine-learning

This is not the course from Coursera but this is the online Stanford ML course that Andrew Ng used to teach before starting Coursera.

Enjoy. Merry Christmas.

sk2code··on An actionable petition for Gun Control
I am 100% with you on this. HN should not be only for Tech conversations. It is the community built by the people and we all have emotions. We are all human beings first.
sk2code··on How do I un-upvote something on HN?
Thanks. I must have replied in a wrong way then. Somehow I though that everything is linked to the Karma. Thanks once again.
sk2code··on How do I un-upvote something on HN?
You cannot un-upvote. I am exactly not sure but to do that you need to have certain amount of Karma points. Which I see you don't have currently.
sk2code··on Can English Majors Be Good Developers?
Why CS is being stereotyped? My wife is an English Major and now she is learning to code. She does have some issues in the beginning but with time she is getting better and better. She told me recently that how tough was some concepts when she started but with practice she is able to grasp them and now she is confident. Will she face fierce competition in the the job market which will put her against some of the people with CS major background? Absolutely. But she is all prepared to explain to her interviewer the passion for her to pursue programming as a career. If someone is good at maths and science from the very beginning then the chances are that they will end up pursuing there career in Tech. What I call "By chance". But for some other people who are taking this audacious decision to enter the field of programming/tech irrespective of their background are the people who I call "By choice". And according to me people who are entering this amazing field of CS/Programming/Tech by choice should be respected and supported.
sk2code··on Teaching Programming To A Highly Motivated Beginner
I guess you are asking the wrong question here. Instead asking how much you should ask who will mentor me? It is more important to find a person who is ready to devote his/her time to mentor new programmers. I wish I would be as lucky as Brian. I am also looking for someone to mentor me. At times hundreds of choices confuses the new learner and all of a sudden the interest to learn fades. This is the best part of this article and so so very True - "There are dozens or sometimes hundreds of ways to accomplish the same task in computer programming; this multitude of choices can be paralyzing for beginners."
sk2code··on Scott Forstall leaves Apple
I guess this is the serious blow to Apple. Many people across the board will reconsider their position with the shares of APPL. Time to take the profit.
sk2code··on Ask HN: How do I go from Admin to Dev?
James, Thanks for asking this question on HN. My position is same like yours. I am a UNIX system admin and I am also trying to learn coding. 16 hours on HN and 0 comments is the proof that people do ignore sys admins who are trying to change their career to coding :)). That was a joke BTW.

What you can do to get noticed is instead of you going to people and asking for job why not you build something (a website, an app, or any other thing) to get their attention. I am planning to do the same. Sharing your code on github will be an perfect strategy but if it is not working for you then try to make something practical out of it. I am sure with your kind of confidence you can build something nice and attractive.

Good Luck with your quest.

sk2code··on Ask HN: Python for web development. What next?
Will do. Thanks.
sk2code··on Ask HN: Python for web development. What next?
Adrian, I am also following the same path as you have mentioned. I am currently enrolled in MITx - 6.00x online course and I too would like to use Python for web development. If you are looking for more meaningful material on Python I would suggest visiting the (http://www.realpython.com/) website and download the e-book ($14). This book is full of real time python usage and it does cover web-development as well. Not sure whether you've heard about it or not but the idea of RealPython was kinda hit on Kickstarter few months back.

It looks like our goal is somewhat similar and if you want to discuss more about learning Python then feel free to drop me an email (see email id in profile).

Good Luck learning Python.
