sjcsjc··on Lyft’s algorithm is trying to block people with names like ‘Dick’ and ‘Cummings’
Words change their meaning over time.

sjcsjc··on Judge orders Google to turn over a full year of actor’s data
Thanks very much.
sjcsjc··on Judge orders Google to turn over a full year of actor’s data
"Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries"

Does anyone have an alternative source for this story please?

sjcsjc··on Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater
Fair enough. Maybe it depends on the definition of "major"
sjcsjc··on Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater
Not wishing to be a smart-arse, but I can't think of any major geological event that we would consider ourselves lucky to observe.
sjcsjc··on Help me ask why you didn't just
The approach I would use also works in the related situation where you're trying to help someone fix a problem and you want to be sure they've tried all the obvious things.

"I'm going to sound like a tw@t* saying this, so I apologise in advance, but I have to ask anyway. X"

where X = "Did you try ..." or X = "Why didn't you use ..."

* change the expletive to whatever's appropriate given whom you're addressing.

sjcsjc··on Paradoxical Geniuses: “Let us burn the ships” (2017)
I read an amusing analysis of Chicken, but I can't recall where, pointing out that playing against an omniscient opponent gave you an unassailable advantage. You just determine not to swerve come what may and your all-knowing opponent would have no choice but to swerve.
sjcsjc··on Senate Considers Banning Dial Phones (1930)
I recall a friend of mine (when we were teenagers in the 80s) whose parents had a physical lock on their phone to prevent the dial turning (to prevent their kids running up phone bills I assume). Unlike his parents, my friend was aware of the "trick" you describe.
sjcsjc··on Ban kids from loot box gambling in games
I think this is an exceptionally good response. Thank you.

sjcsjc··on MoviePass Worked Out Great
Or perhaps a slightly older quote ;-)

sjcsjc··on MoviePass Worked Out Great
I really like this writer's style. This Dickens reference is hilarious:

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure three hundred million pounds, result unicorn.

sjcsjc··on Unusual, evidence-based ways to get better at a new language
I obviously can't judge your spoken English, but your written English is fine. If you hadn't stated otherwise, I would have assumed from your writing that English was your native language.
sjcsjc··on What If We Haven’t Met Aliens yet Because They’ve Messed Up Their Planets Too?
"by the bad luck of where we are"

Or perhaps the good luck of where we are

sjcsjc··on Ear tickling therapy could help thwart ageing
From the article:

"But Dr David Clancy, from Lancaster University, said testing a sham version of the therapy on a control group would have made the results more robust.

"The people who took part were sat in a quiet, temperature-controlled room, and were reclined semi-supine on a couch for the duration of each experiment - I suspect many of us may have found our relaxation and wellbeing improved under such conditions," he said.

Yes, the lack of a control group makes the entire exercise somewhat pointless.

sjcsjc··on Why Has Language Changed So Much So Fast? ‘Because Internet’
Not terribly relevant, but about 20 years ago I noticed that a Canadian visitor to our UK home opened every conversation with the word "so". It sounded extremely strange to me, and I really didn't like it.

Now, 20 years later, I find I begin nearly every conversation with the word "so".

sjcsjc··on Pornhub wants to buy Tumblr
I like Resolute's comment below the article:

I'm not sure Verizon's "buy high, ruin it, sell low" strategy is going to pay off.

sjcsjc··on GitHub publishes DMCA deletion notifications sent by Bilibili
I first heard of it last week from this article:

sjcsjc··on Sweeping Reform Would Tax Capital Gains Like Ordinary Income
There might be a good argument for it of which I'm unaware, but on the face of it taxing unrealised gains seems grossly unfair to me.
sjcsjc··on Cryptography Quotes
It's not strictly relevant but there's a quote my dad used to like, apparently from Mark Twain, but who knows. I'm paraphrasing: "two people can keep a secret as long as one of them is dead"
sjcsjc··on Aging Is a Communication Breakdown
Fasting is one way. Look in Google scholar. One example below.

sjcsjc··on Facebook failed to block 20% of uploaded New Zealand shooter videos
ZeroHedge's comments have been appalling for several years. They made a switch some time ago so that they don't show by default. Frankly I don't see why they don't simply ditch their comments section, but that's there business not mine.
sjcsjc··on Welding breakthrough could transform manufacturing
"The process relies on the incredibly short pulses from the laser. These pulses last only a few picoseconds — a picosecond to a second is like a second compared to 30,000 years."

Nice bit of exposition.

sjcsjc··on Keith Flint, Prodigy front man, dead at 49
As yet another high profile suicide I think that sadly it is noteworthy. (Source: The BBC article quotes Liam Howlett on the subject).
