sinwave··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music
Would it be useful to see this on a grid? I find it's much more intuitive to coordinate strumming with my sense of hearing.
sinwave··on Show HN: Dumbphone – Turn your smartphone into a dumbphone
This is almost exactly what I had in mind. Nice.
sinwave··on Show HN: Dumbphone – Turn your smartphone into a dumbphone
When I had an iPhone, I couldn't bring it to the library to do (school) work, because of the risk of bullshitting on the phone for who knows how long after receiving a text or something. So I would leave my phone at home every day and always miss everyone's calls. My family was not a fan of this, nor was my girlfriend.

I bought a used LG flip phone from around 2007.

I like this. Just switched back to dumb phone about a month ago. I wonder if there would be a market for a touch screen phone with a really nice and simple interface, but no apps; just call and text.

I guess it depends on what one's of "high" is with respect to false positives. I think he's arguing that the costs associated with these false positives are such that even an "extremely low" absolute number (like one in a thousand) is unacceptable.

Consider, for example, if airplanes carried tens of thousands, rather than hundreds, of passengers. Then our acceptable false positive rate may change by an order of magnitude.

sinwave··on Show HN: Markov chains explained visually
Thought I'd point out a little typo. In your table with sliders for adjusting probabilities of state transitions, the P(B|B) probability reads "P(B|A)".

Edit 1: Also, P(A|B) reads "P(A|A)".

Edit 2: Not trying to be too nitpicky, though. It's a really nice visualization. Really excited about the growing use of d3 to visualize algorithms. Is this inspired by Mike Bostock's post by that title?

sinwave··on Std::get_money
Haha. solid.

> Sweet mustache. I see it and it says 'Listen to me, I know what I speak.'

Solid comment.

sinwave··on IRC logs from the beginning of the Gulf War (1991)
Yeah, this comment was massively insightful.
sinwave··on Show HN: Show HN
This is a great comment. An upvote wasn't enough.
sinwave··on I Can’t Afford a Bachelor’s Degree, So I’m Making My Own
Monday evening beers ---> check in on Hacker News.

A winning combo.

sinwave··on Dear Marc Andreessen
Some points in Andreesen's post were eerily reminiscent of Keynes' musings about the fifteen hour work week. See link http://georgemaciunas.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Economi...

Where on earth did the Gilles Deleuze quote come from?
sinwave··on Dijkstra on Haskell and Java (2001)
You're moving the goalposts.

I think bsdetector was referring to the expected cost of committing arson. (Probability of Getting Caught) * (Expected repercussions if caught) = (Expected Cost of Crime). bsdetector was saying that it is "easy to get away with" arson i.e. the "probability of getting caught" is low, so the heavy consequences are intended to address the low expected cost of the crime.
sinwave··on How to Value Your Startup Business (2011)
I see your point logicallee. Thank you for the civility and thorough explanation.
sinwave··on How to Value Your Startup Business (2011)
I was just trying to draw the exact distinction you make. Scarcity of supply leads to higher price given demand, NOT a shift in the demand curve. Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but the language used in the article suggested a misunderstanding of econ fundamentals.
sinwave··on How to Value Your Startup Business (2011)
>"The more scarce a supply (e.g., your equity in a hot new patented technology business), the higher the demand"

Ooof. That's not any economics I've heard of.

sinwave··on I worked on the US drone program. The public should know what really goes on
The title of this article is a bit misleading - I was expecting some fresh facts about the drone program. What I got instead was some heavy pathos and not much substance.
sinwave··on Ask HN: Are you a young startup nerd too?
Clarification: I am an undergrad, non-CS major, who has been obsessed with startups for slightly less than a year. Started at square one (at roughly the same time) in a disparate but aggressive endeavor to learn about programming and data science.
sinwave··on Ask HN: I have 89,830 sound clips of rare records. What should I do?
I wasn't feelin' the vocals. Just making fun though - keep rockin' if you enjoy it.
sinwave··on Ask HN: I have 89,830 sound clips of rare records. What should I do?
mate, I think there is good reason this particular record is rare... :p
sinwave··on Ask HN: My first project/maybe eventually startup
thanks jason.
