simulator5g··on Age verification for social media, the beginning of the end for a free internet?
Well yeah, Facebook has been a data harvesting scheme from the beginning. It was originally called LifeLog. It is not part of the “free” web.
simulator5g··on An Elephant Who Demonstrated That Her Species Might Be Self-Aware, Dies at 55
Who is anyone to decide that some life forms are “lower”? I don’t see it as a big leap.

if it were a real threat you would probably quickly identify someone who is unwilling to turn off their Bluetooth.
simulator5g··on An Elephant Who Demonstrated That Her Species Might Be Self-Aware, Dies at 55
I think its going to be tough for society to reconcile with the fact that we are not so unique as we thought. Maybe it never will. Some animals are self-aware. Plants and fungus can communicate with each other via underground networks. Some of them move, react to stimuli, communicate with others in their species, and are able to differentiate between their offspring and other neighbors of the same species. Is it really any different to be a vegan or a carnivore?

Boiled lobsters actually do feel pain. Some dogs have a somewhat complex understanding of human emotion and language. We had all these hopeful assumptions that we told each other in order to make us feel better about the fact that you must consume living things to be a living thing, and it seems like those are all slowly being proven wrong.

I have met several people who are uncomfortable with the 'master/slave' terminology. In my experience, those who do not experience much racism in their day to day lives do not find it offensive, and vice versa. Therefore, it is at least slightly offensive in my opinion.

Once I was explaining how my day went to an ex, and my day happened to involve the terms, and they were absolutely floored that those terms were still used. Then the whole conversation was about racism in tech, and that had significantly less aura than my story of how I fixed everything. Beware ye olde words, lest ye scare thein hoes.

That would not solve the problem. On a radio, you could have a moment of interference and only receive 'crash' when someone broadcasts 'good crash'. It is better to avoid certain words entirely. There is also no reason to use those specific words when you could describe, e.g. a software crash as a software problem, error, issue, etc.
simulator5g··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
This would probably be a supply chain attack if it ever happens.
simulator5g··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
Someone could have told them it was anything else that you wouldn't want on your body. Like, fart spray or whatever. A prank. That behavior doesn't really tell you anything conclusive, but I guess they just let anyone be a cop these days.
simulator5g··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
You can't really turn off most BLE devices with internal batteries, off means low power mode nowadays. Some of them are still discoverable on wireshark when they are 'off'.
simulator5g··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
Sometimes I see my BT speaker broadcasting BLE info when it is turned off. Most things do not really 'turn off' these days.
simulator5g··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
The idea wasn't to convince anyone of anything, it was to reduce RF noise so the cops could find the offending device more quickly. Also if it were a real threat you would probably quickly identify someone who is unwilling to turn off their Bluetooth.
simulator5g··on UA flight – 'turn Bluetooth off or we're turning around'
While it may or may not be infeasible, it is entirely possible to determine the source of a radio signal. It is also possible to overlay that tech on a camera feed so that you get a composite image showing like, someone standing in the airport & their Bluetooth info above their head.

I would not find it surprising if I learned that a system like this already existed in many airports. I mean now with AI the whole thing could be automated if you don't care about a few egregious errors here and there.

simulator5g··on UA flight – 'turn Bluetooth off or we're turning around'
Devices with built-in batteries are ok for checked bags in the US (though, the temperature swing isn't good for their long term health, and whichever airline you choose may have their own further restriction on that). It's just removable batteries that must be removed.
simulator5g··on What Apple and Google are doing to push notifications
This part is factually incorrect:

"...a notification lives only in the notification centre, which clears, drops and summarises what passes through it and retains nothing reliably."

Your notification center reliably retains information. Something like an inbox does exist, just not in userland: https://www.forbes.com/sites/larsdaniel/2026/04/10/fbi-pulle...

simulator5g··on All of human cooking compressed into 2 megabytes
Besides that, taste is only a small part of the experience of eating something. You can't use an algorithm to cook good food if it has no reference to smell, texture, appearance, psychology, nutrition, culture, etc. You don't even really decide what to eat unless you put effort into the decision, your gut mostly drives you around via the vagus nerve. So a good recipe needs to appeal to your gut perhaps more than it appeals to you.
simulator5g··on What Is a Direct Attach Copper (DAC) Cable? (2021)
It just makes everything feel faster. I went from 500m to 2.5g thinking I would immediately go back (I really just wanted the upgrade to XGS-PON to run my own network) and then I couldn't go back. Its very much like using a higher refresh rate or a faster CPU...
simulator5g··on What Is a Direct Attach Copper (DAC) Cable? (2021)
There's also a common misconception that copper means slow. Because when you have internet from a copper cable in the US, it usually sucks.
simulator5g··on Warm up your MacBook (2019)
Or just leave the machine plugged in and turned on for like 5 minutes while you grab a coffee or have a conversation. It doesn't really take that long to warm up to room temperature. Unless this guy is like biking 15 miles to work in the winter in which case, he is doing Wisconsin wrong, you're supposed to drive to work with a beer to warm you up.

simulator5g··on FBI Arrests CIA Official with $40M in Gold Bars in His Home
You're thinking in pre-covid peasant dollars. $40m isn't that much anymore, and frankly never was to these people.
simulator5g··on FBI Arrests CIA Official with $40M in Gold Bars in His Home
They have funded each other since the beginning of the search engines, so I'm not sure the distinction is very important.

Oh sure, you get free stuff indefinitely if you abuse the system. You sound like that tiktok post about the "infinite free money glitch" that is check fraud.

simulator5g··on Fecal transplants for autism deliver success in clinical trials (2019)
broseph, lowkey you need to read a little about emotional regulation, this person was not trying to disrespect anyone
simulator5g··on Fecal transplants for autism deliver success in clinical trials (2019)
Its unfortunate that society no longer has any mechanism to prevent someone named something like "Asperger" from naming things after themselves. This was a helpful side effect of bullying, like when you fix a bug and it turns out that some people actually relied the incorrect behavior.
simulator5g··on A desire for a loud car correlates with higher scores on psychopathy and sadism
"Personally, I want my CPU to be just warm enough that I can tell its working. We should outlaw overclocking because of [insert some way that it bothers somebody]"

This is just culture war for HN commenters. Everyone should grow up a little more.

simulator5g··on Fecal transplants for autism deliver success in clinical trials (2019)
The bacteria in your gut come from food, the long-term fix is to eat a better diet. Unfortunately, this is quite confusing for most people because you can't see the microbiome in your food, and the only practical way to sense what kinds of bacteria you're promoting with your diet, is to ask yourself "how do you feel" which can be affected by all sorts of unrelated things. I mean, most people don't even really think about how they feel, they wouldn't be able to answer the question.
simulator5g··on Fecal transplants for autism deliver success in clinical trials (2019)
I mean the word transplant implies that it does not go in the mouth. Unless the patient uh... does things a little differently.
