simulate-me··on The death spiral of an American family
Dave Jr. is a high school dropout and an ex-fentanyl addict. Life in America is incredibly fragile. It’s sad, but one’s quality of life largely comes down to decisions made in middle-to-late teenage years. Big mistakes, like dropping out of school or developing a drug addiction, are nearly impossible to recover from.
simulate-me··on SriLankan newspaper suspends print edition on Saturday due to a paper shortage
Paper is expensive because there is a shortage. If there were enough paper to meet all of the previous needs, then the price wouldn’t have increased.
simulate-me··on EU is going to require interoperability between messaging platforms
I don’t think apps will need to implement each others’ features. Rather, apps will need to expose external APIs so that others could implement their functionality if desired.
simulate-me··on Lawmakers Drink Raw Milk to Celebrate Legality, Become Immediately Sick (2016)
I like drinking raw milk. It has a sweet grassy taste compared to store-bought milk. My wife grew up on a farm and it was common to drink the fresh milk while still warm.

One thing that was eye-opening to me about unhomogenized milk is that you can skim the fat and make butter. I’m sure everyone knows that, but what might be less well known is how much butter you can get. A gallon of milk makes one, maybe two tablespoons. That’s it! I’m sure industrial butter making is more efficient, but I always think about how much milk goes into a stick of butter now.

simulate-me··on New Male Birth Control Pill Effectively Prevents Pregnancy Without Side Effects
Do we really need more people? America has almost 350 million, and is completely dwarfed by India and China. That seems like plenty of people to me.
simulate-me··on FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef
GMO, as a technique, is not inherently bad. However, one common use case is to create pesticide resistant plants, which allows for higher pesticide usage, especially as resistance develops to the pesticide increases: https://enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/2190-471...

Basically, if you’re fine with your kids ingesting higher levels of pesticides, then go for it!

simulate-me··on FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef
The breathing issues found in certain breeds of dogs aren't from diversity loss. Rather, the breathing issues are caused by the traits being bred for. Pugs, for instance, are bred to have small noses, so small that they restrict airflow. CRISPR could exacerbate the desire of breeders to express physical characteristics in dogs without considerations for the impact of those changes on the well-being of the dog.
simulate-me··on Mozilla’s Vision for the Evolution of the Web
Firefox provides, by far, more options for customizing the UI then any other browser. Don’t like the redesign? Then download Sidebery and have tree-style tab navigation, or change userChrome.css to remove tabs completely. Don’t act like Firefox has personally assaulted you just because you don’t like their redesign.
simulate-me··on Nvidia Grace CPU
Performance per watt isn’t so useful for a GPU. People training ML algorithms would gladly increase power consumption if they could train larger models or train models faster.
simulate-me··on Workplaces are in denial over how much Americans have changed
All your reasons for liking WFH have to do with you and your personal time. Less time spent driving, more time with friends and family, etc. I like those things too. But I have a feeling most companies will try to optimize for what’s best for the company. If it’s possible to hire talent that can come into the office, then they will in the long term.
simulate-me··on BuzzFeed investors have pushed CEO Jonah Peretti to shut down entire newsroom
Why do the interests of former employees need to be aligned?
simulate-me··on Nvidia Hopper GPU Architecture and H100 Accelerator
Nvidia provides Linux drivers for their server chips.
simulate-me··on There's a new longest suspension bridge
I find suspension bridges to be the most beautiful bridges in the world. There is something so timeless about them (they're literally maintainable almost indefinitely). Many modern bridges are now built as cable-stayed bridges because they're cheaper, but they have a limited lifespan and the concrete isn't nearly as attractive are the the intricate steel patterns found in suspension bridges.
simulate-me··on There's a new longest suspension bridge
Central span length is definitely more interesting than overall length. Technically not a single bridge, but the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is over 17 miles long.
simulate-me··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Civil engineering? Pretty sure you could get qualified in a few years via community college / state school.
simulate-me··on Vanced Discontinuation
What does this say about NFTs exactly?
simulate-me··on How did Europe become the richest part of the world?
Yes, if anything the causality is reversed. Wealth enables a country to exploit others, not the other way around.
simulate-me··on NYC allows citizens to report idling vehicles in exchange for a cut of the fines
Most people don't:

a) spend a large amount of time idling.

b) drive diesel a truck.

c) run a business that requires idling a truck (i.e. commercial trucking literally gets paid to idle).

simulate-me··on Half of US population exposed to adverse lead levels in early childhood
AC would help because the air coming into the car would pass through an air filter.
simulate-me··on Prediction market: We're unhappy with Firestore. What will we switch to?
Why not do something like:

1) Fetch the list of comments

2) Add a listener on the public user info for each comment poster

3) Render the comments immediately. When the user info is available, re-render with the avatar information.

The nice thing about this is that the avatar information will immediately update in real-time as soon as someone updates their avatar. Yes, with a KV-store, you need to do more reads because you can't join data (which implicitly will do a read btw), but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. Immediately reflecting changes to the public user state seems nicer than the convenience of a join.

simulate-me··on Working for US company remote from Germany as A German citizen
The IRS taxation of American's abroad is basically just filing a normal federal tax return and claiming a $100k+ exemption on foreign earned income. It's very simple. The meme that the process is "vexatious and obdurate" seems most often propagated by those who have never done it.
simulate-me··on Food Packaging
The material you’re taking about, plastic, is made from carbon stored inside of the Earth. If we can reliably get it back in the Earth, e.g. via landfill, then I don’t see a huge issue with it. Also, wood was a forever material prior to the evolution of white rot.
simulate-me··on Plasticity Is CAD for Artists
Grasshopper is used a lot for parametric 3D printing as well (the printer prints a one continuous space-filling curve rather than individual layer slices).
simulate-me··on There are not enough BTUs
Those positions are not mutually exclusive. Rather, it's more of an ultimatum. "Spend more on our collective defense and reduce your dependence on our adversaries, or we'll no longer be allies."
simulate-me··on There are not enough BTUs
> I had the feeling that the CCP has some leverage over Xi

Based on what? "Feelings" about dictators is how the world got into this mess in the first place.

simulate-me··on There are not enough BTUs
One of the reasons that Trump wanted to break up NATO was specifically related to Germany's reliance on Russian gas: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nato-summit-pipeline/trum...
simulate-me··on USDA announces plans to support innovative American-made fertilizer
You're assuming that Russia is all but defeated, but that's an assumption that may not hold. China has recently agreed to provide military assistance to Russia, likely drawing out the conflict further. Rather than prevent war, we may have given our adversaries the economic means to wage a way more intense war than would have been possible otherwise. Surely, Russia wouldn't have as much support had we not bankrolled Russia and its allies for decades. America's trade policies have greatly enriched hostile nations. America has enjoyed global hegemony for a long time, but other countries are sick of picking up the scraps. They want America's seat at the table.

In many ways, the theory that interconnected trade promotes peace is similar to the neo-liberal economic view that globalization promotes lower prices and thus more efficient economies. Such a view has been shown to be an over-simplification and ignores important side-effects of changing trade balances, such as rising economic inequality and the rise of populism.

simulate-me··on USDA announces plans to support innovative American-made fertilizer
Oil and gas are used to make hydrogen which is used to make fertilizer, but it’s possible to get hydrogen without oil.
simulate-me··on USDA announces plans to support innovative American-made fertilizer
Interdependent trade was theorized to promote peace, but it was only ever a theory, and one that’s becoming increasingly outdated with each passing day that Russia remains in Ukraine. Certainly there are aspects of the concept that are true, but Germany’s dependence on Russian gas is now limiting its ability to respond to a crisis. They’ve handicapped themselves and can no longer promote peace and in fact are funding a war.

So we shouldn’t try at all?
