simulate-me··on “It Is Getting Worse. People Are Leaving”
The average length isn’t enough because the likelihood of derailment might be a function of train length. It’s possible shorter trains have gotten safer and monster trains have gotten more dangerous due to their increasing length.
simulate-me··on “It Is Getting Worse. People Are Leaving”
Isn’t there a third option that both your interpretation of the data and the letter are wrong? The letter specifically mentions the derailment of monster trains. These trains have more cargo and so one derailment can lead to a more severe delay in shipping times.
simulate-me··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
I believe the dark parts of a hexclad pan are teflon.
simulate-me··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
My experience with eggs is the opposite. Eggs stick when added to a cold pan. Letting the pan get really hot first has stopped eggs sticking for me.

Where is the right form a corporation and to run a bank enshrined in the constitution?
simulate-me··on It’s time we fix the unethical design of cookie consent windows
If you look more closely at the dialog, they usually break the cookies down into "necessary" and "optional" cookies. Necessary cookies are used for things like maintaining you login state. Optional cookies are used for things like advertising tracking. When you decline cookies access, you're only declining the optional cookies.
simulate-me··on The UX of Paid Journalism
When you enter into an agreement for services, it’s usually not sufficient to just stop paying. You may still be liable for the charges if you haven’t gone through the cancellation process you agreed to.
simulate-me··on Dude, where's my fuel?
How good is water at capturing CO2 compared to the other absorbents? My guess, not as good. So is more CO2 released because they're capturing with water?
simulate-me··on Dude, where's my fuel?
It makes the burning of fossil fuels more efficient, e.g. you can X tons of coal to produce Y MW of power and get Z additional gallons of gas. But it's really a stretch to call this carbon neutral.
simulate-me··on Stanford gets $1.1B for new climate school from John Doerr
Very tenuous that this specific donation will do that. Most likely it will be used for a building (which requires concrete, a major CO2 contributor), and the rest will go to the university's endowment where it will sit.
simulate-me··on Why Hy?
Using Go as an example, if I were to write a "Why Go" article, it might look something like this:

1) Simple, one way to do everything. for loops, code formatting, and project setup.

2) Good concurrency (go routines)

3) No exceptions, readable code and error handling.

This article is titled "Why Hy." It should sell me on the language with a philosophy supported by examples, not instruct me on how to write a floating point number (unless the language has a interesting take on writing floating point numbers!)

How is donating to Stanford, a private university, making an enormous contribution to the public good?
simulate-me··on How to Launder Money with NFTs
How do you buy crypto with dirty money? That seems like the hard part.
simulate-me··on Nelson testifies cost-plus contracts have been a “plague” on NASA
Companies receiving these contracts (either fixed-price or cost-plus) will be incentivized to maximize profit and the expense of the shareholder. I don't think it's possible to remove this incentive. Instead, the government should be more careful with whom receives the contracts. For instance, SpaceX seems dedicated to doing a good job and driving costs down. Therefore, right now, SpaceX should receive more contracts. SpaceX's focus may change in the future, and it's the government's responsibility to pay attention to those changes and change contractors if SpaceX starts leeching off of government funds. Adequate competition for contracts will align incentives more than the structure of any particular contract. Everyone here saying that Lockheed turns a 10B problem into 20B of work due to cost-plus might be correct. But why can't the government find someone to do the work for 10B? With proper competition, incentives will align.
simulate-me··on Fed raises rates by half a percentage point – the biggest hike in two decades
The schedule of rate increases had already been announced. Given that a less aggressive schedule was unlikely given inflation, there was a possibility of a more aggressive schedule. I think the market is reacting to that.
simulate-me··on Fed raises rates by half a percentage point – the biggest hike in two decades
3% is still super low historically. Let's wait and see how the economy actually reacts to the rising rates. Back in 2019, the Fed got cold feet and started lowering rates after hitting ~2.5%. The amount of money in the system is also unprecedented. Judging by the reverse repo rate, people are sitting on $2T with nothing to do with it. Maybe higher interest rates will bring that down, but inflation looks like it will remain high for some time.
simulate-me··on Why Hy?
Not really. I want to understand why the language is interesting. For instance, even though I know nothing about Lisp, I can guess that it supports booleans, integers, and floats. Tuples and complex numbers are kind of interesting. But then it goes on to strings and concatenation, which I already assumed were possible in Lisp.
simulate-me··on When I made another Monkey Island
Without having context of when this was made and that it was part of a game, this looks like a fairly generic picture of a mountain. You regularly see images with far more atmosphere on r/PixelArt.
simulate-me··on Why Hy?
The first snippet of code I see on that page requires me to understand way too much syntax. It's nice to see smaller snippets of code when first exploring a new language to decide if it's worth the effort to learn the syntax and language features.
simulate-me··on SF Conservancy now accepting copyright assignment for any GPL software
My point is that the GPL should include a clause that if you sue for a breach of contract and win, then the violator of the license needs to pay your legal fees. This would (theoretically) allow a lawyer to sue with your permission and on your behalf and get paid while still forcing the infringer to respect the contract and release their code.
simulate-me··on An engineered barley plant that ‘orders’ soil bacteria to manufacture fertiliser
Grouping insecticide and herbicide together:

> Overall, pesticide use increased by an estimated 183 million kgs (404 million pounds), or about 7%.

simulate-me··on SF Conservancy now accepting copyright assignment for any GPL software
The legal fees would add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars at a minimum. There just aren't many people / organizations who have that kind of money to spend just to get some open source code. Perhaps adding some language about legal fees would make the license more attractive to lawyers.
simulate-me··on An engineered barley plant that ‘orders’ soil bacteria to manufacture fertiliser
The only papers I've seen that indicate GMO has reduced pesticide use were published by various industry groups with unclear ties to pesticide manufacturers. Academic papers seem to indicate pesticide use is higher, especially as the pests develop a resistance to the pesticide. E.g. https://enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/2190-471...

> Contrary to often-repeated claims that today’s genetically-engineered crops have, and are reducing pesticide use, the spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds in herbicide-resistant weed management systems has brought about substantial increases in the number and volume of herbicides applied.

simulate-me··on SF Conservancy now accepting copyright assignment for any GPL software
It depends on your viewpoint. GPL code authors rarely have the means to pursue legal action in response to license violations. As a result, GPL code is generally "stolen" with impunity.
