simplyinfinity··on Phind-70B: Closing the code quality gap with GPT-4 Turbo while running 4x faster
I just tried this.. It's a bit more lazy than chatgpt 3.5/4 which sometimes go ahead and translate a Go file to C# in full. Most times they omit most of the logic because "it's too complex" "it would require extensive resources". Phind is no different, but it entirely refuses to do entire code translation.

simplyinfinity··on The Bun Shell
In the .net world, we have a namespace called System.IO, that houses cross platform implementations of functions to work with directories, files, searching for files, can't we just have a standard js library in the same spirit, than try to half ass emulate a shell just so someone can run rm - rf. All of this seems extremely unnecessary and a wasted time and energy to solving the wrong problem.
simplyinfinity··on Slashing data transfer costs in AWS
I have hetzner vms going on 500+ DAYS without restart. I've been a hetzner customer for about 8 years now. Aws has been down x10 times more than hetzner has. And even when hetzner has issues they are localized to a single DC at worst, most often a single host is down. When aws has issue.. The whole internet has issues. Or their central region goes out, also can affect their other regions.

For the small/medium businesses infra I manage here in bulgaria , the same thing would cost 5-10 times as much on aws just for the compute, throw in 1tb of bandwidth.. And this makes no financial sense.

On hetzner I pay 40 euros for 2 vms, dedicated ips, daily backups, 100gb of ssd external storage, and firewall.

simplyinfinity··on Dave Cutler on Windows [video]
Interesting tidbit.. DC mentions he's using 96 core Thread Ripper.. which got announced 1 day before the release of the video.
simplyinfinity··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
Imagine I was one of those people that their DNA got leaked. How would that could/would/will affect me?

And please, don't say "insurance companies would love that data!".

simplyinfinity··on Windows Copilot's is showing third-party Ads to Windows users
What's the difference between this and Google showing you ads in search? What's the difference between this and Facebook showing you ads? What's the difference between this and YouTube showing you ads?
simplyinfinity··on Plex announced to block instances on German hosting provider Hetzner
Use the mobile/desktop app. Chromium Doesn't have the proper codecs enabled to stream transcode-free most of the time. the apps have them enabled.
simplyinfinity··on Plex announced to block instances on German hosting provider Hetzner
Use the Desktop app or mobile app. Chrome/edge don't support the codecs needed, and jellyfin transcodes. The desktop app is chromium, but with the right video codecs enabled, on it. It's pretty nice.
simplyinfinity··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
finally, society can have a break from all the doom scrolling. I wonder how much mental health benefits we're gonna see overall from this.
simplyinfinity··on WHO advises against use of artificial sweeteners
If no one can afford it, does it matter if it can cure everything? On an individual scale it matters. On a massive scale like a country, more affordable but less good is overall better for the whole country, but not for the individual.

As an example, in the US you pay thousands for an ambulance call, get to hospital, pay hundreds of thousands, insurance (for which you pay thousands more per year) covers most of it, except they're trying to cheat you out of as much as possible so they pay less, and in the end, all amerikans are one incident away from bankruptcy.

In most if not all of Europe, you pay health taxes, but not in the upper thousands, get good doctors, and don't end up bankrupt for breaking your arm or hip. And the ambulance is free (as in your taxes pay for it).

simplyinfinity··on Minimum Viable Hugo
WordPress. I hate its guts, but my god does it just work. Or I'm just going to give up and use squarespace or webflow, or something like that. I've got a full time job, managing this is not worth the mental energy it takes to learn all it's quirks.
simplyinfinity··on Minimum Viable Hugo
I just started using Hugo, but boy, are the docs bad... and I mean REAL BAD. It took me an HOUR to setup a theme. Then another 30 mins to realize I've set up the theme the wrong way, using a git submodule, instead of a go module. Then installation of the go module itself took another 30 mins of debugging, because nothing was working out of the box. And nowhere in the documentations are things explained for novices. The docs are written in a way that assumes you already know Hugo's ins and outs. uh... At this point, I would've been better off with a WordPress install that takes 5 minutes to do manually.

simplyinfinity··on Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch
I don't get this sentiment `AI is wrong! OMG WE'VE BEEN LIED TO!`

Is anyone REALLY thinking that AI will respond with 100% correct facts? Because in my mind it's the same as google/microsoft/etc search results. The response is just a summary of the "knowledge" it has based on the content it was trained on.

Also, is it realistic to expect AI to be correct about everything it spits out?

simplyinfinity··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
They did. I've been on meds (Concerta) for 10 months now, i'm able to focus on almost anything. I'm attentive, focused and do a lot of work, instead of being distracted, watching youtube for no reason and doing chores a lot more easily.
simplyinfinity··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
Talk to a psychologist or psychiatrist, to get you tested for adhd. It might not be that, as depression can also present itself as adhd symptoms, but either way, you will find out why it's like that and fix it. It helped me a lot when I found out what I'm battling with.
simplyinfinity··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
I've been diagnosed with adhd by a psychiatrist, I have a big stack of projects and activities I want to do, because I like them or they solve a problem I have. See, the thing with adhd inattentive types is that you have a dopamine intake problem, so you get random bursts of focus and motivation on things that are novel and you find intriguing, but as soon as figure out how something works, that dopamine dissappears and you can't focus on that thing even if your life depends on it. Same as the article author, I'm a lot more productive when I have someone breathing down my neck or I'm doing something out of spite, just to show them how it's done or that I can.

It's not about apps, techniques, habits, tricks or what have you, most of those things don't work for adhd peeps. What works is having a job be variable enough to keep you interested for a long long time or have adhd meds (Adderall, Concerta etc.)

simplyinfinity··on Paul Le Roux is Satoshi?
After some digging I found this:

1) The address that was used to send this message is not the first address that the genesis(the first "mined") block sent money to.

2) The "genesis"/Satoshi address has been used through the years a lot

3) The "Paul le Roux" address is far less active

4) this transaction was made 9 days after the first block was mined

My conclusion here is: Paul le Roux _MIGHT_ be Satoshi, but unlikely, more like very early adopter who either knew Finney, Satoshi or both. But neither can be said with 100% certainty.

simplyinfinity··on Apple to allow outside app stores in overhaul spurred by EU laws
Show me a government that has 0 corruption. No system is perfect, but there's better ones and worse ones. IMO EU is one of the better ones, but not a perfect one, obviously :)
simplyinfinity··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried to model the entire business world as a graph?
My ontology is very simple, since I only care about owners/shareholders

2 types of nodes

  1) Company
    <-> Owners ( Company|Person )
    Incorporation Date
    Name
Type (llc, c-corp,s-corp, publicly traded, etc)
  2) Person
     <-> Companies
     Name
I can start adding other types of relationships and properties, but that was not my goal :)
simplyinfinity··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried to model the entire business world as a graph?
I mapped my country's businesses and their owners relationships. Some very interesting things popped up. A private yellow/fake news company with THOUSANDS of owners/shareholders, lots of people with few hundred companies. company "rings" etc. Pretty fun stuff :)
simplyinfinity··on DIY out-of-band management: remote power button
Few years ago I did the same thing with a raspberry pi zero W and two bash scripts - one for power on/off one for reset. It's quite useful to have and was born out of the need to reboot my Ryzen 1700x powered pc, due to p(ower)state bug that I only uncovered as the culprit a year ago.

simplyinfinity··on Leonardo Syndrome
To the contrary, I'm a person with ADHD, and most days I'm thankful for it. But I also do have a huge amount of started or sketched side projects, that I wish I had the will power to finish, but I don't.

P.S. ADHD is not a sickness/illness. It's differently wired brain.

simplyinfinity··on Leonardo Syndrome
Honestly, this sounds to me like an analytical/creative mind with ADHD.
