simonvc··on Yahoo Groups to remove all content December 14
Don't know if it's still true, but i heard once the the UK phone number portability system was run on a yahoo group.

(a quick google shows the rumors were true.. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0027/56646/s...)

Dont drink and drone.
simonvc··on Lilium unveils five-seater air taxi prototype after a successful maiden flight
Alternate + 45 minutes is a rule designed for airplanes that need a runway to land. Helicopters typically have 10m fuel reserve rules because they can land just about anywhere. I'd expect VTOL electric rules to be similar.

Another project the "BYE" electric trainer is getting FAA certification right now, with 260Wh/kg Li-Ion

You know how that story ends right?
simonvc··on Iberia claims it is part of a department store to avoid Brexit shutdown
ICAO Air law rules date from 1949. Airlines are super aware of these treaties/rules whenever ownership changes hands. It's not like they thought about brexit as a particular scenario, it's more like, lets make sure the airline we're buying is actually embedded legally before stumping up the cash for it.
simonvc··on Picovoice – Embed private voice AI into any product instantly
Came here to say this.. Had a great idea for using this to help train pilots to do the RT (i'm doing my PPL now, and this would be perfect..) The lack of JS optimizer means i can't really hack on what, could have become a nice passive income site.
simonvc··on The Secret API of Banks
Have you opensourced that code? i'd be interested.. (i'm half the team that built IFTTT at Monzo)
simonvc··on The Obsessive Search for the Tasmanian Tiger
There are no Thylacines left. If there were, one would have been road killed by now.

Source. Australian. Have had near misses with every kind of non-extinct Australian wildlife while riding motorbikes around tassie.

The Diamond Age - Neil Stephenson, touched on this.

No-one's said it yet so i will (but not my idea..) This is going to be super useful for a future Oculus AR headset.

Basically, imagine the current oculus go headset, but with cameras on the front, and instead of showing you the actual world, it shows you a game, based on the existing current world, but morphed to look like Starship Troopers or something.

simonvc··on The fifth hyperfactorial: 5⁵×4⁴×3³×2²×1¹=86400000 milliseconds is exactly 1 day
It was useful for sailors to be able to divide the day into shifts, so our day is the most divisible number of hours long.

1 x 2 x 3 x 4

That way you could have half days, quarter days, or third of days.

An hour is divided into 60 minutes: 3 x 4 x 5

The word "second" means a "second division by 3 x 4 x 5"

simonvc··on How to become a bank (2016)
The UK regulators have done amazing work making it possible to start new "challenger" banks. We started 3 and a half years ago, so this kind of guide would have been super useful for us at the beginning.

It was a bit more opaque back when we did it, before us only a handful of new banks had been created since Metro bank, and that was the first in 125 years..

simonvc··on Elon Musk said SpaceX's multi 1000 satellite Internet service will be IP-less
These are MEO sats, not Geo stationary at 30,000km.

The round trip for these will be about London to Edinburgh and back and we video conference that distance all the time.

simonvc··on Riak and the demise of Basho

simonvc··on Maersk IT systems infected with ransomware
I worked a Maersk for a couple of years. This happened once before, we came in and all Maersk's machines were randomly shutting down.

I heard later a rumour that the reason the AV didn't pick it up was it was a 0-day (stuxnet derived before that was known) and it was literally targeting the SCADA systems on boats.. but that's also the plot of Hackers, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Anyway being the build/devops/tooling person on a project i burned 40 dvd's with eclipse and ubuntu and handed to them to the devs and they booted into Ubuntu and kept developing.

All was going fine until i got a telling off from the Corporate IT security team complaining that our unauthorised Ubuntu machines weren't running AV and so could be introducing viruses into the network.

Total facepalm.

simonvc··on ProtonVPN

simonvc··on ProtonVPN
Great that there's more options out there. Will there be an option to signup over TOR, and pay with ETH or BTC?

I run free privacy/security classes for journalists, and some of them have said that their sources can't use paid VPNs because they're afraid of the purchase showing up on their credit card statement.

TOR is great, but doesn't yet work for things like video chat (yes i tell them not to use Skype...)

Faraday cage bags are already a thing.. I can see them being a lot more popular..
simonvc··on Tesco Bank halts online payments after money was taken from 20K accounts
Tesco ask you to log on with "character 2 and 4 from your password" which sort of implies they must store the password in clear text (unless some kind of zeroknowledge/homomorphic encryption magic i've not heard of.)
simonvc··on Richard Stallman's 22-Page Rider (2011)
As someone who's hosted RMS for a week, i appreciated having this information available.

I find websites that call out Richards eccentricities to be in extremely poor taste. It's no-ones business but Richards, and the people who choose to host him. To put it delicately, having a clear user manual for a non-neurotypical person helps immensely.

simonvc··on How do bank payments actually work?
Disclaimer: I work at Mondo and am the one implementing the way we talk to our agency bank.

How it actually works is theres a Message Queue (IBM MQ) that is connected over dedicated lines (MPLS or point to point, but not over the internet).

Each side uses a couple of layers of Crypto, including using Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) to actually encrypt and sign the messages.

The crypto signatures also have legal standing in a sense, if the message is valid and signed then the counter party or agency bank is authorised to process it.

simonvc··on Signs of Secret Phone Surveillance Across London
Richard from Privacy International pointed me at these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00RRL4XLW It's a faraday cage for you phone. Pop it in and you disappear instantly.
