simonhorlick··on Why a Brit chose to start a business in Berlin
So Brexit does impact your decision? I'm interested to know why, and how, it impacts you.
simonhorlick··on Ask HN: Any recommendations on resources for learning one algorithm a day?
Just read The Art Of Computer Programming by Knuth very slowly. There's basically a different algorithm every other page. Of course, it will still take you years.
simonhorlick··on Tup – A file-based build system for Linux, OS X, and Windows
I've also been using Bazel for a couple of months now and it's fantastic. Simple, declarative syntax, blazingly fast. I can't recommend it highly enough.
simonhorlick··on Building a Modern Bank Backend
Having worked in the industry, most top tier investment banks run on microservices, some for over a decade. Just because microservices is the new buzzword doesn't mean it's suddenly a bad, or risky idea. I don't know about the backend state of modern retail banking, but I'd be surprised if this wasn't also the case.
simonhorlick··on Anti-if: The Missing Patterns
This. If there's anything that's made me a better programmer it's Misko's talks.
simonhorlick··on Challenges of micro-service deployments
Microservices can work great for v1, but you absolutely need a common rpc framework and a solid way to deploy, test and monitor. Most teams don't have the right building blocks. This will change with time.

NGI Systems | Software Engineer - Early Hire | Kuala Lumpur or REMOTE

We are a London-based restaurant tech startup looking for an experienced full stack Software Engineer to join as a key early hire. Visit our product website at www.NextMenu.com to see what we are building.

We're looking for a strong core-Java developer who's comfortable with dependency injection, the Java standard library and concurrency. You will be expected to analyse problems and decide on appropriate solutions, weighing the cost of development against time-to-market. You should have lots of experience writing unit tests and treat it as a key part of development, not as an afterthought.

Frontend experience using Angular.js and experience with both relational databases and NoSQL databases is highly desirable. On the infrastructure side, a strong knowledge of Linux, Android and networking is a must. Familiarity with AWS and IPSec VPN is a bonus. You'll be working with a globally distributed team, so regular communication and daily scrum meetings are essential. We have two-week sprints so features are aggressively prioritised to meet the changing needs of our customers. You'll be involved from a very early stage, so there is the opportunity to make a huge difference to the solution we are building and to the company overall. The location preference is for Kuala Lumpur, where our CTO is based but the right person can work from anywhere.

simonhorlick··on How to Create a Working Kiosk Mode in Android
Nice writeup. I had to do most of those things for my startup. I replaced the home screen in its entirety so there's no way to escape our app at all. If we need to administer it at all there's ssh installed. I just spent today building logstash-forwarder into the image so we can view logs from all devices in real-time.
