Maybe you can argue why it's not most countries? It seems obvious to me that it is, but I also come from a country where everyone is bilingual.

Many former European colonies are mostly bilingual, e.g. Africa is highly multilingual out of necessity. Much of Europe itself is also mostly bilingual. If you want to communicate outside your own little region and your native language isn't a lingua franca, you need to be bilingual in this world.

The main holdouts when it comes to bilingualism are former imperial powers who managed to both kill domestic language diversity (e.g. France, UK, Russia) while also spreading their national language as a lingua Franca. Another group of holdouts are settler colonies such as the US, which didn't have a dominant native population after the arrival of Europeans.

But even if e.g. Russia itself isn't super bilingual, the rest of the former Soviet Union certainly is, since that is just the reality if you live in a small and/or formerly colonised country.

I mean... 20% is not really a lot. It's probably a lot closer to 100% in most countries of the world.
simongray··on The Danish Ministry of Digitalization Is Switching to Linux and LibreOffice
It's gone from the frontpage now and isn't anywhere in the top 200 either. Hmmm. I guess he was right.
simongray··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
There are several early retirement systems in place in Denmark for people who are unable to work.
simongray··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
It's different in every country. In Denmark it is a mix: everyone receives a state pension (the Nordic model of universal welfare), but almost everyone also has a private pension account that they out money into.
simongray··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Full-time in Denmark is 37 hours/week and most people have around 6 weeks of vacation/year (the legal minimum is 5). Some people will be working part-time, bringing the total hours worked down, so the numbers make sense to me.

And lots of people write on the web using English as a second language, which both reduces the presence of their native language and increases the presence of English.

I wonder if this is why Time Machine started taking up all my CPU resources after I upgraded? I had to shut off automated Time Machine backups because it literally makes my M1 MBA unusable for few minutes every hour.

Aha, TIL! Thanks.
simongray··on Isar Aerospace launches Spectrum, fails early in first stage flight
This video contains visits to and interviews with both Isar and another European startup, RFA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRFnGnJzRJQ

I found it quite interesting. They are taking two very different approaches.

If someone built a space port in the Canary Islands that would actually be at a similar latitude to Cape Canaveral, though the latitude of French Guiana is hard to beat (and the Canary Islands are technically part of Africa, not Europe).
simongray··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
Before the inauguration, Tesla was trading at a P/E 30 times bigger than Toyota. Now it's about half that (110).

Some say Tesla shouldn't be valued as a car stock; it should instead be valued as a Tech stock. Well, Tesla traded at a P/E about 4-5 times that of NVIDIA which itself had a high P/E compared to the other Magnificent 7 which in turn have a high P/E compared to the stock market in general.

What exactly is Tesla so great at that they deserve this enormous valuation? Its P/E has gone down to ~110 now, bit this is still incredibly high compared to e.g. NVIDIA which is trading at a P/E of ~40.

> anyone know a European alternative to SwiftKey? :P

Sadly, SwiftKey is/was actually a UK company that was acquired by Microsoft. Most successful European tech start-ups seem to end up being acquired by one of the American tech giants. Perhaps this is will be ending now.

It's something I've noticed that has started happening on this site whenever the EU is mentioned, especially when LLMs/AI is also mentioned or any kind of regulation. Hacker News is also quite biased against academia in general and, IMO, has always been too obsessed with making money.

I don't think it's (just) bots. I think it's the current strain of Silicon Valley arrogance, not unlike what helped create the current political landscape in America.

My bad. I misread the official website:

> We don't currently support Apple Silicon, as there is not yet a Kokoro implementation in MLX. As soon as it will be available, we will support it.

I thought that meant that it didn't support Apple Silicon in general, but they were just talking about GPU support.

simongray··on ElevenReader by ElevenLabs
Ah my bad! I just read the "We don't currently support Apple Silicon" on the official website, but I didn't realise that only pertains to GPU support.
simongray··on ElevenReader
Oh no, it doesn't run on Apple Silicon. That's too bad.
simongray··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
I guess you are one of the lucky ones who writes everything correctly the first time around.

I tend to move around parens quite a lot while developing, constantly refactoring, so some kind of structural editing was necessary for me from the get-go.

simongray··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
Thank you, Colin! Now you mention it, it makes so much sense that you use Parinfer yourself. The implementation is so great and doesn't feel quirky to me (or maybe I just got used to the quirks).
simongray··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
I've been using Parinfer with IntelliJ (Cursive) ever since I started developing Clojure professionally back in 2018. The best thing about Parinfer, or at least the implementation in Cursive, is that it doesn't preclude you from also mixing in some Paredit commands too.

When you start out with Clojure/Lisp and you aren't totally used to parenthesis you can just use Parinfer to get editor behaviour similar to developing Python. It removes a major pain point of migrating to a Lisp. It used to be the case that you were forced to learn Paredit pretty much from the start.

simongray··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
AFAIK Calva does have a Parinfer implementation.

simongray··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
It wasn't legal at the time, that's what's just been established by the verdict.

Apple (uniquely) having a near zero tax rate is considered illegal state aid to a company. Private companies are supposed to operate on the same terms within each European country.

simongray··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
They've also hired Michael Fogus to work on Clojure, so more resources are definitely being put into developing the language.
simongray··on Local First, Forever
RDF is open-world and entirely additive; it doesn't solve the synchronization problem. You will end up with an ever larger set of triples.

Also, the author has created the most popular client-side database in the Clojure community (Datascript) which happens to be for making knowledge graphs, so I'm sure he's familiar with it.

simongray··on Try Clojure
I'm the same, always just used parinfer with IntelliJ, though I do know a few paredit key combos that I use occasionally (paredit isn't disabled just because parinfer is enabled).
simongray··on Try Clojure
Autocomplete also works for the functions and vars in the namespaces. You don't really use methods in Clojure unless you're doing interop with Java or JS.
