simon_o··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
It's not about removing redundancies or landmarks, it's about Rust having made some not-so-good choices.

It's slowly becoming apparent to more people (e. g. compare the screeching a few years ago about Rust's wrong choice of <>/::<> generics to today), which I guess is why we see more of these huffy articles from Rust defenders.

simon_o··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
You mean the issue they banned him from? ;-)
simon_o··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
> he shouldn't take a personalized Sourcehut-only exception because this doesn't address the core issue for any new small providers that pop up

Exactly. We already saw how this ended with Google vs. people running mail servers.

simon_o··on No Congress 2022: Looking forward to decentralized alternatives and Camp 2023
I rarely see submissions with such a high proportion of flagged/dead posts ...

I wonder what it is that brings the crazies out of the woodwork, whenever some congress announcement happens.

simon_o··on Call for Participation to Chaos Computer Club’s 37C3
Do you have a trusted person that you can hit up for some advice on how human interaction in a society works? Please do it.

Because the more I read from you, the more I believe that you are either severely mentally ill or just an enormous asshole. I don't care what it is, but fix yourself.

And to answer the question: That guy should be grateful that he left with all his teeth, cause secu doesn't mess around. That's how wrong you are, and none of your entitled whining will change that.

With every sentence you write you manage to make yourself look more like an oceanic garbage patch of a human being.

I feel sorry for you that you seem to be absolutely unable to reflect your own behavior.

simon_o··on Call for Participation to Chaos Computer Club’s 37C3
> You don't convince me.

Absolutely. I can't reason people out of positions they haven't reasoned them into.

Apart from that, your whole comment is so fantastically out of touch and anglo-centric, that it's actually quite funny:

None of your "abstain from politics", "Marxist ideology" sound bites will elicit a reaction from the target audience of the congress, except laughter and ridicule.

It just reads as your FOX News/QAnon consumption fried your brain and no one will take you seriously, except the pitiful "look at the American trying to impress with big words he doesn't understand".

I cannot put into words the confused state of your mind that let you produce this risible word salad, so I'll just link this reply here:

Congratulations, literally everything about this is wrong.

Not sure in what kind of fantasy world you live in, but get help. Maybe lay off your "supplements" for a bit.

simon_o··on Challenges for Rust
My advice: Stop trying to get into fights with everyone, and no, the whole world isn't out there to get you.

I hope you learn to interact more positively and constructively with your surroundings.

Until then, please go away.

simon_o··on A personal list of Rust grievances
I wouldn't call this "fixed". It's more like the worse-is-better people won another round.
simon_o··on Teaching C (2016)
Realistically speaking, everything in C is undefined behaviour.
simon_o··on Teaching C (2016)
Imagine being such a regressive, that you believe you can other can write "correct C", despite decades of evidence of the opposite.
simon_o··on Using unwrap() in Rust is okay
As someone else already mentioned, "your response is kind of harsh".

Why not try and be a bit more kind?

simon_o··on Using unwrap() in Rust is okay
Why would it be slower?

Indexing may incur range checks, but iterators/combinators are pretty much destined to have them elided.

Hope that helps.

Loving it!
simon_o··on Fast Rust Builds
Perhaps macros shouldn't do things that aren't "obvious" then?
simon_o··on Fast Rust Builds
Exactly. ! for macros was a mistake anyway, I guess that's why they stopped using it with await.
simon_o··on Fast Rust Builds
You realize the syntax has changed more than that?
simon_o··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
> could be tasked with the drudgery of intervening in naming disputes or managing an identity layer

That's why there are proposals that delegate the naming to outside systems with their own established dispute resolution rules.

This is due to the crates team requirement of "namespaces are not allowed to create additional work for the team".

So any proposal that makes them the naming authority is out from the get-go.

simon_o··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
The GP made nothing more than a prediction about the future.

Let's let the future determine whether he was right or wrong, no need for squabbling.

simon_o··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
> The developers have convinced themselves that they're right on this, having, I suppose, not learned from the hundreds of package managers that have come before them. They're wrong; full stop, no qualifications, no asterisk, no footnote, they are totally wrong on this and it is inevitable that their opinion will change.

A thousand times this.

Why are so many things in software three-steps-forward-two-steps-back?

simon_o··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
Oh wow ... that guy ... is also doing this?

That certainly puts his participation in the namespacing debates into a new light.

simon_o··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
I think what the GP wanted to say was along the lines of "look at _better_ approaches", not just "look at approaches".
simon_o··on Go is boring, and that’s fantastic
> It isn't a case where you would need to be careful and knowledgeable to avoid it - there's just no reason to do it.

Then why does it compile?

simon_o··on Go is boring, and that’s fantastic
> I’d argue Go didn’t ignore those things, it just made a different set of trade-offs than most people are used to or expect from a modern programming language.

You are wrong.

simon_o··on Adblockers Performance Study
Would love to switch back to Firefox, but the general UX is just too terrible.

I also lack the trust that even if they fixed the major issues (or even allowed fixing them yourself) I would be able to rely on things working in the mid-to-long-term.

Currently holed up on Vivaldi, where the things you expect out of the box, are in fact working out of the box (vertical tabs, mouse gestures, ...).

Freetype has been superior to Microsoft's and Apple's implementation for years, with incremental improvements ever since.

One of the reasons I would never buy a Windows or macOS machine. These companies really need to sort out their quality issues with font rendering.
