simfoo··on EU unveils sweeping climate change plan
Literally the first sentence:

  A dozen draft proposals, which still need to be approved by
  the bloc's 27 member states and the EU parliament, were
  announced on Wednesday.
So not even approved by the member states yet :/
simfoo··on EU unveils sweeping climate change plan
I don't disagree, the past years have made me cynical about all big EU proposals :( But time and time again it has shown that proposals that actually would change things get watered down hard or shut down completely
simfoo··on EU unveils sweeping climate change plan
I'm all for thinking and acting big on big issues.

In my opinion however the EU as is is hopelessly underpowered to effectively address big issues. They just don't have the mandate to actually get all 27 states to act as one.

The moment EU policies go against high member nation interests they are shut down. See Poland, Hungary, Netherlands, Malta, Luxemburg, etc for examples of this. Every single one has the power to basically veto all decisions.

simfoo··on The humble water heater could be the savior of our energy infrastructure woes
The city of Munich in Germany actually has a cooling network to cool large buildings in the city centre. See here: https://www.swm.de/geschaeftskunden/fernkaelte
simfoo··on Big tech face EU blow in national data watchdogs ruling
>How about actually supporting the European Tech industry instead of just adding endless bureaucracy?

How about doing both the first while also ensuring that european law is actually being followed? So far US monopolists have relied on being in bed with Irish lawmakers to avoid the GDPR fines.

simfoo··on Justice Department withdraws FBI subpoena for USA Today records ID'ing readers
Actually this track-ability is what is keeping me from subscribing to news websites. I'd easily pay a few bucks to them for the privilege, but I don't want to log-in or identify myself every time I read an article.
simfoo··on Google made it nearly impossible for users to keep their location private
This is what is keeping me from switching. Apple, if anyone is listening: allow a full Firefox browser on the iphone and I will switch in a heart beat
simfoo··on Behind the design of the fresh new Firefox coming June 1
Please just bring back pre-Fenix Android Firefox together with performance improvements. There are still only a hand few of addons supported, lot's of bugs that remain unfixed. This is not the time for another redesign
simfoo··on The Colonial Pipeline Was Fine, Shutdown to Make Sure Its Owner Would Get Paid
Not just in the US. In Germany economic-liberal politicians keep pushing for privatized infrastructure all the time, arguing it would be better managed by a private company.

This goes as far as privatizing toll collection on public streets. Unsurprisingly this always leads to badly maintained infrastructure and higher costs in the end.

simfoo··on Counter-Strike Global Offsets: reliable remote code execution
Forgot that last point, a good dispute mechanism is absolutely needed
simfoo··on Counter-Strike Global Offsets: reliable remote code execution
By realizing that a purely technical solution is not enough.

- make it easy to report suspected cheaters

- include footage from the cheater, not prerendered but as client state

- create a way for experienced players to judge, from multiple angles, with proper randomization and incentives

- require an id for creating an account. Ban persons not accounts

simfoo··on Cinder: Instagram's performance-oriented fork of CPython
The parent proposed gating for warnings in the CI, not (by default) on the developer build.

I completely agree with this, as a dev I want to see warnings but I don't always want to have everything perfect from the start. The famous example here is -Wunused-arg. I DON'T want to fight this during development, when I often have prototyping stages where functions remain unimplemented intentionally. I very much want to avoid merging this into master though, so CI gating with -Werror it is.

simfoo··on Luca App: CCC calls for a moratorium
Yes. This is what you get when incompetent officials jump on any offered solution that promises to make their awful track record of "digitalization" projects look better. Of course without listening to actual experts and instead looking for buzzwords.
simfoo··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
I have a list of packages that can be safely removed from modern Samsung phones (I'm not missing anything at least, updates still work). Email me at <my_profile_name>@imap.cc if you're interested
simfoo··on Linux, macOS, and Windows running simultaneously on a first gen Core i5
I would pay good money for a ready to use distribution/setup that supports this incl. making sure it continues to work after updates
simfoo··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
Samsung S10e has both. Best smartphone I ever owned (once you got rid of all the crapware using ADB).
simfoo··on How did Microsoft make Flight Simulator seem so real?
The fact that MS did not add mouse yoke to the game, and despite the backlash still hasn't done so (allegedly to push the sale of new flying gear) makes me so sad.

Using the mouse for steering is absolutely superior to a keyboard and connecting a joystick everytime I want to spend a few minutes flying is just non-practical.

simfoo··on Conan – A package manager for C/C++
C++ has way to many failure modes regarding linking and generally consuming libraries (ABI issues, build system agnosticity). Conan addresses those compatibility issues in a holistic way through package ids, which are basically hashes over anything relevant.
simfoo··on Conan – A package manager for C/C++
In my opinion using Conan to distribute your packages really only makes sense if

- you are a very popular library, in which case you should be in the Conan Center repository

- you are in a controlled environment (company) where you host your own repository and support users with their use of it

In other cases you can still use it to manage your own dependencies but distribute your software via different means.

simfoo··on Conan – A package manager for C/C++
When a dependency requires to be built with a certain toolchain, Conan can't do anything about it. At best it really only surfaces a problem that might be hidden if you were just be using pre-made builds.
simfoo··on Conan – A package manager for C/C++
Love Conan, the team behind it at JFrog is nothing short of amazing. Just awesome people who love what they are doing.

However I'd recommend against using the "legacy" CMake generator and instead go for the cmake_find_package generator. This way your CMake build avoids the hard dependency on Conan. See here for an example: https://old.reddit.com/r/cpp/comments/lm0qja/using_conan_wit...

simfoo··on Barcode scanner app on Google Play infects 10M users with one update
Which affect the OS mostly and not individual apps. Funnily enough OS updates are usually not automatic. Which I think is a good thing because vendors keep mixing them with "feature updates" which end up making things worse (looking at you Samsung).

I'd love for Google to take away the security update channel from the phone vendors and auto-update ONLY security-related things through that.

simfoo··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Exactly that. There needs to be a mandated federation protocol for instant messenger apps that have lets say > 10 million user in the EU.
simfoo··on Threema apps are Open Source
Love Threema, works extremely well and stable and offers a good compromise security-wise with the optional key verification through QR code
simfoo··on A preview of x64 emulation on Windows for ARM
What happened to the patent issues surrounding x86 emulation? For example I remember reading this: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/06/intel...

First Apple and now Microsoft. Do they license the patents from Intel or did they expire? Or are they working around that somehow?

simfoo··on Git is too hard
Well it does auto-pop the stash as well if the rebase was successful. I've been using it for ages and never noticed a growing stash
simfoo··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
I went premium earlier this year to avoid the ads while getting my favourite channels a little revenue. If they ever start showing ads for YouTube Premium users I'm out of there
simfoo··on 16-inch MBP 2x slower than M1 MacBook Air in a real-world Rust compile
I see no numbers or even just the command that was run exactly. So maybe wait until someone runs the benchmark in a reproducible way?
simfoo··on Git is too hard

    git config rebase.autoStash true
simfoo··on Bazel Build System Support for LLVM
Most likely the CMake build is simply building more code than Bazel is. I am 100% sure that this is not comparing apples to apples
