simfoo··on Show HN: Using C++23 <stacktrace> to get proper crash logs in C++ programs
stack_trace allows you to specify a custom allocator, which would protect against a lock held in the allocator (never ran into this in the real world though).

You're right about mutex & cv in the general case though

simfoo··on Show HN: Using C++23 <stacktrace> to get proper crash logs in C++ programs
The signal handler just saves the trace and then wakes up another thread which does the reporting. The signaled thread uses only <stacktrace> and mutex/cv, all signal-safe as far as I can tell.
simfoo··on Demo: Fully P2P and open source Reddit alternative
I think decentralizing and p2p is the wrong approach to solving the issue with commercialized social networks. What we really need is a non-profit & transparent & independent governance setup. Financing should happen through donations, maybe grants but certainly not ads. A bit like Wikipedia mixed with Mozilla, but even more transparent.
simfoo··on Gaia's first black hole discovery: GAIA-BH1 (2022)
The closest one has 10 solar masses. Gravitationally there is zero difference between a black hole and a regular star except that the black hole has a way smaller radius. So for us it doesn't matter _at all_.
simfoo··on Launch HN: Moonrepo (YC W23) – Open-source build system
I agree this is one of the biggest weak points of Bazel. It lacks a distribution that provides all these goodies out of the box, with maintained and documented workflows. Setting up hermetic builds and remote caches, builds & execution requires a whole team of experts right now.
simfoo··on CLib: Header-only C library that implements the most important classes from GLib
The problem is more that "public domain" is a concept that is not universally accepted in a legal sense, examples are Europe and in particular Germany. Case in point, Sqlite had to come up with a license agreement to make it usable for companies in those countries.
simfoo··on CLib: Header-only C library that implements the most important classes from GLib
From gstring.h:

> Copyright 1988-90 by Robert B. Stout dba MicroFirm > * > * Released to public domain, 1991

However the header and readme state MIT license. You can't just release public domain code under a new license right?

simfoo··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
This is also my experience. Large Rust/C/C++ code bases will easily compile 3-4x as quickly with a fast workstation as with a top end laptop. I blame thermal design and power limits
simfoo··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
Nothing beats working directly on a fast but quiet workstation sitting next to my table.

At least for me, the productivity gains associated with quicker builds, IDE resyncs (CLion, looking at you) or just being able to have email, chat, calendar and an active video conference running without making the system crawl to a halt or long latency spikes are huge. 3-4k for a machine that will likely last 2-3 years is nothing in comparison.

simfoo··on Europe's Newest Nuclear Reactor Eases Finland's Power Problems
few things that help here:

- interconnect with other regions (someone always has wind or sun or both)

- spread turbines across the entire country

- build as much PV as possible (there is plenty of space on roofs)

- combine renewables with hydro storage

- (in a few places) generate hydrogen and store for times where wind & sun are not enough. Doesn't have to be pure hydrogen, converting to methane or better yet ammonia)

simfoo··on Europe's Newest Nuclear Reactor Eases Finland's Power Problems
11 billion € for 1GW. Cost for wind energy is around 1.2m€/MW. Which means that the same amount of money could have been used to build over 3500 wind turbines in the 2-3 MW range, producing up to 8.7GW (and probably never less than 1GW).

Nuclear is nice on paper but totally bonkers once you look at the numbers. And they aren't even accounting for all costs, e.g. insurance and long term waste storage are heavily subsidized.

simfoo··on Enhanced Rock Weathering for CO2 Removal [video]
Personally, I think the mindset we need here is one we know from war times: attack the problem like you would if you were defending your country against a massive enemy force.

That would mean (among many other things):

- important industries are put under government control (energy, chemical, agriculture etc)

- suspend the legal system where it slows down your defense (e.g. no more nimby litigation possible against wind/solar farms)

- manage everything top down (but transparent)

- put up a wealth tax to finance the efforts

I guess this is very unpopular to many, but I genuinely believe a concerted war-like effort coordinated with as many other countries as possible is our only hope to fix things now.

simfoo··on Asus Zenfone 9
Will buy this purely for the fact that it has the 3.5mm jack and a separate finger print sensor. Sensor placement on the side is perfect, I've long been searching for a successor for my trusty S10e
simfoo··on Exit, pursued by a bear
It's truly remarkable how badly the whole energy sector was managed in the past 16 years of Angela Merkel and her conservative-lead coalitions. It's not about nuclear or no nuclear really, Germany started out with a strong wind and solar industry and has lost all of it to China over the past decade. New wind turbines and (importantly) new power lines connecting the wind-heavy north to the power hungry south have been continuously delayed by nimby politics, also mostly pushed by conservative parties. Meanwhile the coal and nuclear industry got huge compensation payments and issuing new debt to finance investments was basically made unconstitutional by the horrible "Schuldenbremse" legislation. How bad can you fuck up country and still be seen mostly positive in the world??

Same thing happened to a bunch of other release archives and broke our CI pipeline
simfoo··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
Actually it didn't, the issue came back. Disabling http3 seems to be needed to fix
simfoo··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
Oh man and I thought it was only me. I couldn't even refresh Firefox from the UI and had to start it in safe-mode to reset everything. That fixed it but holy moly
simfoo··on Optick: C++ Profiler for Games
Oh wow thanks, looks like exactly what I'm after. I've been using perf+flame graphs when I didn't have access to VTune, but will try using Tracy instead.
simfoo··on Optick: C++ Profiler for Games
Very interesting, but seems to be focussed on games / frame-based simulations. Does anyone know a similar generic graphical profiler for Linux that also provides system context (other threads, syscalls, preemptions)? I'm only aware of VTune.

What features would a browser need on top of regular webview APIs?
simfoo··on Google Chrome to remove detailed cookie and site data controls
Not just on exit - cookie autodelete is awesome. 10s after I switch site all past cookies are gone
simfoo··on Helm is a personal server that lives where you do
Interesting project! I'd feel much safer though if the server-side stack were available open-source to self-host. They can still offer the subscription for people who don't want to self-host.
simfoo··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
If trust is the main criteria, I guess self-hosting is the only option (albeit a time-intensive one). There are commercial providers like mailbox.org that offer the possibility to PGP-encrypt incoming mails so that only you can read them.
simfoo··on TSMC hikes chip prices up to 20% amid supply shortage
My guess is also that the age of high-end graphics cards for 500€/$ has come to an end. Going to order a 3070 for 850€ now, after waiting for months
simfoo··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
It is a myth that swiss-based providers are in any way safer/more anonymous than others. See here for a recent article (in German): https://steigerlegal.ch/2021/08/02/protonmail-daten-usa/
simfoo··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
I get your point. As a EU citizen though, I want to at least have a way to realistically fight a lawful intrusion after the fact. If I understand the Australian laws correctly, they are mostly enabling hidden surveillance.

I'll be trying out https://mailbox.org/en as an alternative. They seem to have good PGP infra and are hosted in Germany.

simfoo··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
As much as I love Fastmail, I think it's time to move elsewhere. I don't feel safe trusting a Australia based company with my online identity after all those hostile laws.
simfoo··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
Sorry, but I don't think that ANY big player, especially from the US, can/may resist NSA/FBI requests to access customer data. And we know from Snowdens leaks that those requests don't just come for criminal or terrorist cases but are routinely used for economic espionage.
