sillysaurus··on Founder of Tor Freedom Hosting arrested in Ireland, awaiting extradition to USA
throwingaway78's account is banned, but they posted an interesting comment. Here it is for non-showdead readers: http://content.screencast.com/users/shawnpresser/folders/Jin...

They are apparently a pedophile, and they give an account of what life is like for a pedophile and on darknets. They also assert that there were little to no rapists / people selling CP on Freedom Hosting.

Here's a pastebin of his comment for screen readers: http://pastebin.com/9uuQK4ME

Are you saying that the audience is too immature to discuss the issue responsibly, or that there can be no reasonable discussion on the topic of child porn?

I had no idea it was a $10b industry, and if not for HN discussion then I probably wouldn't have learned that.

EDIT: after re-reading, tptacek seems to be saying "threads questioning whether child porn is valid to be hysterical about result in useless discussion." That's probably reasonable.

Could I see a source on that $10b figure?

Please don't blindly copy paste from reddit without at least making it applicable to what the parent comment actually said. They didn't say anything about camera makers.

You know what. I'm outta here for awhile. It's people like you that make me depressed to read HN or try to be involved. The guidelines even say "if you wouldn't say it to their face, then don't say it." Yet you were such an asshole to me right there without even an apology. That would've been okay if I had received an actual answer to my question, but instead I got a context-free link to a Wikipedia article with no way to interpret the complexities of how it relates to the issue at hand. The result is an unhelpful, unhealthy, negative state of mind. And that would be okay if I actually learned something from the experience. But the only thing I've learned from this is that you personally attack and belittle anyone who doesn't know the same things you know.

Dude, you're being more than a little bit of a dick. I'm ignorant of government policy and politics in general, and it's only recently that I've begun rectifying that.

Yes, it was a simple, straightforward query for information that I lack. And you hardly answered.

Well, in what way was Apple the government's friend or benefactor?
sillysaurus··on The $4 Million Teacher
Our teachers are our kids' jailers. Spending more for better jailers would probably have a decent impact on the future.
sillysaurus··on The $4 Million Teacher
Actually, a test falls along a continuum of importances. Some tests are better than others, not merely useless/useful.

sillysaurus··on T-Mobile backs Ubuntu smartphone
May I ask, how much do you pay each month after taxes and fees? (Assuming you opted for tethering.) Something like $45 + $10 taxes/fees?
sillysaurus··on T-Mobile backs Ubuntu smartphone
Wow! How much are you paying each month after fees, taxes, etc? I have the same service with AT&T, except I get 700 minutes a month. But I'm paying about $90/mo.

Your service includes tethering, right?

sillysaurus··on John Carmack Quakecon 2013 Keynote Livestream
John Carmack isn't thinking big enough for Elon

A few years ago I had the same thought about Carmack. I wondered why he seemingly abandoned his vision for space travel by returning to work in the game industry on Rage. I figured Carmack probably realized that Elon's SpaceX was going to "win the race" and gave up. Or maybe Carmack is just getting old. Either way, he's still one of my heroes.

I think blind people / screen readers might have difficulty with this interface, too. It's important to keep accessibility in mind when designing futuristic interfaces.
sillysaurus··on Paul Graham reviews Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (2000)
The Art of Computer Programming in PDF form can be found on The Pirate Bay, and I encourage anyone who can't afford it (students, programmers between jobs, etc) to download it. But if you feel you learn anything from it, then you must buy it later once you have the income.

Also, it's probably ethical that if you've bought TAoCP, then it's ok to download it in PDF form. Some people like PDFs instead of hardcopy.

sillysaurus··on Google Pressure Cookers and Backpacks, Get a Visit from the Feds
Actually, the story is that the government knew they googled for pressure cookers and backpacks. That must mean there's a tool that someone can type your name into and get a list of everything you've searched for online.
sillysaurus··on Why I Left Medium
This seems like a good opportunity for me to solicit some advice, if I may:

My writing is bad. Do you have any recommendations for how I could improve?

Better question: Would you mind describing what your own path was like going from "I'm a bad writer" to "Hey, I'm fairly good"?

My lack of writing skill has bothered me quite a lot over the last year or so. I've sent emails to various HNers asking that question, "What did your path from beginner to master look like?" but no one responds. (... Perhaps I didn't write the email very well...) :)

I have a lot I'd like to write about, but expressing myself well turns out to be the hard part for me. If I can figure out how to do that, then I think people will find the topics interesting. But I'm finding it very difficult because I'm a complete beginner. I've never written any long articles/essays/books before.

Thank you for your time!

EDIT: Here's something specific: I'd like to get better at using metaphor. I'm finding that even though I've been writing a lot, I seem to have reached a "plateau" of quality. It's.. well, it's just dull. I don't use many metaphors, and I know my writing comes off as very dry. So I'd like to get better at whatever skill or mindset that lets me spice up my writing, rather than my writing plodding dutifully along its lackluster course without any flair in presentation. Has anyone else found themselves in a similar situation? How'd you overcome it?

EDIT2: Thank you for the great responses!

sillysaurus··on The four lamest excuses in MIT’s report on Aaron Swartz
Even then. In fact, especially then. I wouldn't be able to stomach taking away even one month of someone's life for words that I wrote.

I'm writing a book. I plan on putting it on piratebay myself. I'll have an option for people to pay me if they so choose.

sillysaurus··on The four lamest excuses in MIT’s report on Aaron Swartz
Putting him behind bars for downloading bits is ludicrous, and history will look back on us as living in some sort of dark ages.

Just had to get that out of my system.

sillysaurus··on Ten Signs a Claimed Mathematical Breakthrough is Wrong
Are mathematicians going to be using TeX in a hundred years? Two hundred? Five hundred? Two thousand?

Math is timeless. TeX may be, but it's too soon to say. It's a recent invention. It's only been around for 35 years.

sillysaurus··on Be The Obnoxious Needy Junior Programmer
I disagree. Juniors need the skills of looking things up on Google or they'll never develop them.
sillysaurus··on Honest In-App Purchases
No no, it's a distinction I've wanted to make for a long time. It's a positive thing to encourage discussion of how game development is different from social engineering, and what social engineers can learn from game development fundamentals.
sillysaurus··on Honest In-App Purchases
I'm a game developer. I want to make one thing clear:

The people who make these sorts of games aren't gamedevs. They are social engineers.

It's unfortunate that the distinction hasn't been very clearly defined. It's not true that just because they've created an interactive loop that they've made a game.

If you're bringing in enough customers to cause you scaling problems, then that's a good position to be in.
