sillycross··on Memfd_secret() in 5.14
I'm most amused by this comment in the original post:

(Context: the discussion is around the drawback that memfd_secret must disable hibernation)

> That's why the only way to introduce new security feature is with “more security” choice being the only option.

> ... eventually, Chrome and Firefox would join the crowd. At that point it would become a moot point if you want to use hibernation or not: you system wouldn't be much useful if you would choose the hibernation.

Always interesting to see how ignorant some "security experts" are and how they love to hijack users and sabotage user experience using the excuse of "security".

sillycross··on Optical adversarial attack can change the meaning of road signs
Because maps can always be out of date?

It's common that due to construction, temporary road signs are placed to re-route traffic. It would be a disaster if the self driving car simply ignores them because they are not on the map, I assume?

sillycross··on Exploring Clang/LLVM optimization on programming horror
My experience is that LLVM can generally optimize the IR produced from clang frontend a bit better than the IR produced by myself. The advantage is small, but still exists.

I think the major reason is that TBAA optimization is only possible if you manually emit those metadata (clang does, but I didn't, due to time limitation and fear of aliasing-related bugs).

But that LLVM is designed to work best on the pattern emitted by Clang is definitely another reason. In fact, even the official documentation recommends users to emit IR in a way that looks similar to what is emitted by Clang, so you have a better chance to keep the LLVM optimizer happy.

> not for example going to drive into a brick wall because of an arrow.

If the self driving car misinterpreted a "NO SWIMMING" sign to a "MUST TURN RIGHT" sign, I assume it's going to take the turn and drive into a lake?

sillycross··on The Construction of Bit Mixers
It's very interesting to see how those hash function finalizers are constructed/discovered behind the scene. It seems to me that instruction count is not the best metric (since slow instructions and fast instructions have drastically different speeds, and CPU internally can pipeline instructions), probably sorting the candidates by real clock time performance is more reasonable?
sillycross··on The most vaccine-hesitant group of all? PhDs
I skimmed the original paper. It surprised me that the vaccine hesitant percentage for PhDs remained unchanged (in fact, even increased a tiny bit) throughout Jan - May 2021, while the % for all other groups are steady decreasing.
sillycross··on Show HN: PochiVM – lightweight framework for easy and efficient code generation
Hi HN,

Author here. This is my personal hobby project of a JIT compilation framework. It is not polished yet, but the core features are there. I would appreciate any feedback, suggestions on improvements, bug reports, etc.
