sigi45··on Faxing is growing in popularity
Germany 2018: oohh you like to cancel your online account for our service? Her is our fax number: 0FUCK / YOU

Yes I send one fax per year for most stupid reasons.

Like: hey I have to send more documents to my state for taxes which I originally sent digitally through there secured service page: yes no problem here is our fax number...

sigi45··on ARM processors like A12X are nearing performance parity with desktop processors
As long as it is not much faster and cheaper than x86, there is no reason for me to switch. I think i can't even switch atm.

But i don't mind more competition on the market as long as it doesn't cost me headaches like 'this package doesn't compile on arm' or whatever.

sigi45··on U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
I thought FB will become something like family and friends sharing. Taking part in other lives but in an efficient way.

But it didn't happen. Very rarley are there any picture galleries. And lots of stuff other people share? Always the same.

So the realization set in that it isn't that interesting to have a social network.

I only need a chat and we replaced our family chat with whatsapp.

sigi45··on Polar as a Personal Knowledge Repository
Like it and will check it out.

Had similar thoughts and I named it knowledge graph.

The center is you, than you tag books, lectures, wikipages and have a visual representation of all of your knowledge.

I also imagined having your whole education in it and because it's a graph, you could import a path which you can follow. 1+1 needs to be done before you can do 1*1 etc.

I thought about it while learning for a university course and a lot of time was spent on finding good material which explained a topic. And after the exam I started to forget stuff again.

It felt really stupid.

I wanna be in control on what I know, what I want to know and what I no longer need to know.

And all tools out there are not that good. Anki is doing its job but nothing else. Memrise does it more playful but also misses stuff. Duolingo (most of online learning has this problem) feels more like 101 <topic>.

How is it possible that 1000thands of universities record videos of lectures every year and are often paid by all of us (Germany for example) but all those videos have one or all of the following issues: - bad audio - bad video - horrible handwriting - no slides

Should it not be possible to sit together and create small topics and build one ONE comprehensive learning page?

...

Edit: and such a platform could not only benefit a lot of people it would also be financially a good deal. From 1-6 grade it could support parents and teachers, than teachers and pupils and later profs and students.

Lots of knowledge doesn't change every year.

sigi45··on Teen Becomes First Hacker to Earn $1M Through Bug Bounties
That is indeed a lot of money.

Not sure why there are not more people doing it. I thought about it as well for years but still don't do it.

sigi45··on What you need may be “pipeline +Unix commands” only
Leads are having the responsibility. Most of them are good and know there shit.

So I wouldn't worry to much. All other small companies who have people who don't know better, don't have too much technology inside anyway. Or at least often enough.

sigi45··on How Much a Dementia Patient Needs to Know
Sometimes he calls out, “I want to die. . . . Let me die.”

I personally will try to end it.

The stigma and no real options makes it more difficult than it needs to be.

sigi45··on K3s – Lightweight Kubernetes
Nope but it solves problems you have to fix yourself otherwise anyway:

- Rolling update? Build it yourself or get it with k8s - Infrastructure as code? Do it somehow yourself with ansible, awx or other setup OR just use k8s - Running different workloads on a bunch of hardware with resource scheduler -> some trickery or x different kind of vms

I like it very much and i hope and guess that the k8s way will take over a lot. And since i'm working with k8s i really wanna have it at home. k3s sounds like a very good way forward.

If you have a good working little setup, you don't need to replace it with k8s.

sigi45··on Amazon Personalize: Real-Time Recommendation
They should.

Perhaps they are not.

Perhaps the best they can do, is to recommend to all of us the same/similiar product again because thats the only thing they got working: Catching those x percent of people who send the tv back and buy the second recommended one.

I know and my argument is that your argument, doesn't matter to me. I also wrote why it doesn't.
sigi45··on Leading with Wikipedia: A brand proposal for 2030
Soooo first of: I have not said that Wikipedia editors get money. But i'm assuming that my donation goes into something which motivates people to take part.

Easier editing for example. Or education about how to edit.

I don't have any lexika in my house. Everyone i know which has some form of it, its old.

I also don't think that a redactional lexicon is much better than the wikipedia. Why should it be? Bias perhaps but gathering facts is hardly a bias thing.

Wikipedia is free, i can freely distribute it, i can clone it, i can edit it. This is the most comprehensive datacollection with public access i know.

sigi45··on Leading with Wikipedia: A brand proposal for 2030
Wikisomething gave me so much information.

The price i'm paying with my few donations i made over the years, are donations i don't bother to check what they are doing with it.

Why? I'm not part of it. I'm just here, reading stuff on wikipedia.

I don't know what they wanna try out. I don't know who or why so many people are part of it. I haven't written a single article. I fixed stuff but thats it. Perhaps they need it to build the community around.

They got my trust.

sigi45··on A Beach Nobody Can Touch
I never understood why people are often enough so unlogical. But i heard a very nice theory which makes a lot of sense:

I was not very good in understanding the world around me, so i analyzed it and thought about a lot of stuff. Like debugging a computer program. My mental model is based on logic and on logic reasoning (of course not all actions, after all i'm a human being).

Religion is a easy target/example: It doesn't make sense as at the end of it, there is only faith. What i also didn't understood where contradicting beliefs: If i believe in religion i should submit to it. Like if you are not allowed to drink alcohol, you don't do it and if you don't wanna do it, you leave the religion. (there are probably more / better examples but religios people often contradict themselves much more often).

Anyway my worldview is based on that, therefore i also act on it. I don't believe so i left church.

But most of us don't build there worldview on logic but on what they see and experience. Those unlogical worldviews are not rational, not comparable and from person to person different. There is no issue for person a to throw that shit on the floor.

This helped me to understand those people better.

Now on how to interact with them: There are traingings in my exising and previous companies which go in directions of: Leadership, Sales, Teamwork, Conflict management etc. Those and similiar books and 'tips/tricks' for how to get people to accept your viewpoint or make them help you, are tools for me to try a non direct logical approach to those issues when you have a good argument or objective points and they just hit that wall.

Start not with the main point of the argument but nitpick small things which are easy to agree. Climate change: Do you see any issue in planting trees? Do you think in general, independend of climate change that it is not a waste to plant trees.

Or find different angles: When you drive a car, you do recognise that you do produce gases, right? What happens when you sit in your car and only breeth the exhaust fumes? You probably die right? So in general reducing those gases should be a good thing for our health right?

Or if you have an idea and some has only the negative viewpoint: Its a good idea but it will not work because of x. Okay that might be but if we start with y and the risk/cost is very low, do you have anything against it?

Or trying to get the other person on board: Hi, i'm super sry but i have this problem xy and perhaps you have an idea which can help me? Instead of "Hi, i need this".

Not sure how well i transported those ideas and concepts.

This gets much more difficult on bigger scale. But you see the Zeitgeist changing in our society. Frustrating slowly but i hope and believe that everyone who promotes it, lifes it and demands it, has an impact on it.

We will see.

sigi45··on Is a shared database in microservices actually an anti-pattern?
If you don't even need to split out the database you probably don't need Microservices.
sigi45··on Is a shared database in microservices actually an anti-pattern?
Why would you make Miniservices?
sigi45··on Am I Unique?
That is very vague / strange tips you give out.

The response header shows, that nginx is used already.

There is no need to put static assets to some cheap vps if you have already a server. Depending on the bootleneck, it might be much better to upgrade ram or optimise the code or finetune some database cache or whatever happens at the BE.

But without knowing details, it doesn't make much sense to move assets or use memcache. Often enough, people do shitty sqls or are not even aware that there is something like a query cache (which you can also use lightweight without adding memcache to your stack).

When you look at there about page and also make a lookup on there ip, you will see that it is hosted by them from there own network https://www.inria.fr/. So this project was probably build by some researchers, which some agenda on how well that service should actually run and a budget. They probably got a VM from there IT Department (or are part of it) and are in theory capable of fixing there issues but the working student is on a new project and no one really cares about it (the domain was registered 2014).

A few or a lot?

I don't wanna be condescending or saying i'm better in any way. I have learned a lot over the years and grew.

I have never thrown trash on the floor but that is thanks to my mum and her 'teachings'.

My biggest issue with this is not necessarily that we kill our environment (worst case we 'used it up' we die and it might just come back) but i never stooped learning or being critical about something. You see so many people who got stuck and lots of those people got stuck on different things or habits or lives.

It took a long time and lots of rethinking about things, what if those people (few or many) will never reach this necessary level and we (the 'other') have to force them through zeitgeist / laws / punshiment?

Even if you have everyone reaching that necessary level, you will always have people in between. Shouldn't we start thinking on teaching live skills relevant for all of us?

How much impact does radiation has on our cancer rates we at the moment?

I mean, i would accept the risk of flying and getting a xray but i would probably try to choose my building materials differently if it would make sense.

Slack is Electron. Slack is installed on many laptops. Slack App just sucks and wastes real resources.
