siffland··on 15ft tumbleweeds trap drivers and force Washington state road closure
I don't know, I saw this on an Outer Limits episode once, those tumbleweeds are up to no good or maybe they are trying to communicate.......

siffland··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
I have personally almost hit people riding in the middle of he road on multiple occasions (mostly near the convention center area). On the weekends i will drive around the downtown area wasting time and gas to now avoid that situation.

My wife drives for lyft and spends a considerable amount of time downtown and has almost had accidents with people riding escooters in the street, to the point we engaged our insurance agent and asked about liability (we were assured if hit in the middle of the road and not in a bike lane, crossing lane or sidewalk we would bee free of liability and she now has 3 cameras in her vehicle).

An last year at PAX south in downtown SA I was walking on the sidewalk and hearing people yelling to move because they were having all sorts of fun chasing each other and almost running people down.

So I am not complaining to complain. I assume you live in San Antonio and are downtown quite a bit? People leave them everywhere, they fall over in the streets, you cannot say you don't see this.

siffland··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
I ride a motorcycle to work almost everyday (today's 47 degree ride was a bit brisk) and i have to say, drivers don't look out for bikes, and this is a major city (San Antonio).

My big issues with motorized bicycles are lanes to ride and rules of the road. I see people riding them on sidewalks, in streets, and in bike lanes. It is almost like people on motorcycles who ride in the break down lane or lane split (both of which are illegal in Texas).

We already had/have a HUGE problem with the escooters, people getting run down by kids on the sidewalks and riding them in traffic downtown.

I am for this 100%, but please put down infrastructure and some sort of rules of the road and enforce it.

siffland··on Xiaomi camera playing on Google home hub sends stills from other people's homes
By not caring about who can look at my front lawn, I am implying if that camera footage gets hacked I do not care. I own my lawn and can do whatever I want with the footage.

As for people walking or driving by, they are in public and have zero expectation of privacy. I live in a school zone with a high school of 3500 kids across the street, most walk home. No one would never believe in a million years the crap they do to my lawn and the neighbors. They throw trash in my lawn, leave soda cans and bottles at the end of my driveway so I literally have to either stop in the street and move them or run them over getting into the driveway. They throw things in the back of a pickup truck in my driveway. They do this to all 12 houses on my street. It is nice to have footage in case ANY of this results in criminal damages. And it is legal.

So if that is selfish, then I am cool with that.

siffland··on Xiaomi camera playing on Google home hub sends stills from other people's homes
My other half wanted the nest cameras, especially the doorbell one. She wanted to be able to check in real time when we are not at home if someone was at the door.

I wanted camera's in the garage and back yard on at all times (people have wandered around the back yard before). Nest also costs per camera, so it would get expensive as well.

So it was a variety of issues and it was a compromise i was willing, or maybe forced, to do. I am happy with just the closed camera system and sending footage offsite, alerts and logging on with my VPN if needed.

siffland··on Exploiting Wi-Fi Stack on Tesla Model S
Most car manufacturers are reactive, like the Jeep hack a few years ago. Cyber Security should be on the forefront of their radar, but takes a back seat. So having outdated software is not that big of a surprise. I have a 3 year old phone that functions fine, but i might need to get a new one since it is full of security holes and no updates.

I find myself conflicted since i love the technology behind the new cars, but my paranoia about the lack of security and the inability of myself to do anything about it.

If only they had cameras in the cars so while they are applying the brakes when you are on the interstate they can collect that classic picture of horror on your face....

siffland··on Xiaomi camera playing on Google home hub sends stills from other people's homes
This stuff gets me paranoid, i have a nest doorbell, because i don't care who can look at my front lawn, and a nest camera that only gets plugged in when no one is at the house. Other than that i have a closed circuit camera system with motioneyeos (motion activated) and a few POE cameras with no wifi and send the footage offsite.

I know it is not as convenient, but these cameras are getting scary. These are only the stories we know about. imagine who else is watching.

siffland··on Sentenced to 10 years, Marty Gottesfeld wrote about Bureau of Prisons corruption
This is the US, the chances of him serving all 10 years is slim, probably parole out after a few. Also anytime he already served in jail will go towards his sentence.

However, this is a hospital, imagine if the DOS somehow would of contributed to a death.

siffland··on Ransomware gangs now outing victim businesses that don't pay
I would bet most of this users clicking things they should not. recently my company put out a phishing email and people clicked on it and then started a thread on the internal forums about how mad they were the company would do this (they had to take extra training if the fell for it). Another co worker was telling me about his old position where he put the thumb drives in parking lots and people would pick them up and plug them into their work computer, and the would get mad that their security team did this exercise and caught them.

Yes a lot can still be done with security on machines and traffic, etc.... But the human factor is hard to control and fix. If someone sent out a phishing email with a link that said "click here to see magical unicorns jumping over a rainbow", someone would click it, i know poeple i work with who would click it. It gets, frustrating at least for me, since i have a lot to do with security where i am at.

I can just hear people saying it now. Joking aside, and not taking in ANY ethical/unethical misuse considerations this software is capable of, it is really cool tech.

siffland··on The internet doesn't care about multiplayer games
One main difference is anyone can buy a truck and start a shipment company. Unless you have a ton of cash you cannot lay down infrastructure for your own ISP and must pay someone else to sue theirs.

Also I am pretty sure a lot of our infrastructure for the internet was subsidized (via grants or what not) by the government for the big tel-co companies (I have been trying to find legit links to source, but in my quick limited search only found Reddit threads). If this is true, then we, the taxpayers, helped pay for the internet we use and should get at least net neutrality.

Just my opinion, probably wont match everyone else.

siffland··on Sanders unveils plan to boost broadband access, break internet and cable titans
I will preface this with, my internet costs a ton and i would love it to be cheaper.

My issues with the government running the internet is, first money. They say they are going to end price gouging, but they will spend billions, if they succeed wont the taxes the telecoms pay be gone and wont it cost more. Also then the US government controls the internet from your house. ISP's spying is bad enough.

I am probably wrong on both of these minor complaints, and i would love to see cheap fast internet.

siffland··on Dating While Dying
Some people do splurge for flowers and a casket, but the last 4 or 5 funerals i have been to stated "in lieu of flowers" donate to such and such. Some people dont do that and still buy flowers.

As for the casket, I believe the cheapest pine box is good enough for me (or cremation). Of course the metal vault around the casket is defiantly needed...you know in case of a zombie outbreak ;)

siffland··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
Living in San Antonio, I ride almost every day. It is funny when I ride and have no phone or music I am much more aware of my surroundings. I also notice people texting more and when a car is driving funny can almost predict if they are on their phone.

The few times i have almost been hit is by someone who has a device in their hands and most are merging into my lane and not paying attention.

It is an Insignia from Best Buy, so it is a budget brand.
siffland··on How to play with people who are better than you
Years ago i used to go bowling with a few friends, i would get like 80 or 90 points and they would get around 225ish. Several months later i was up to getting around 200 points per game. Granted it was all for fun, but just playing with them made me a better bowler (i have not been bowling in a decade now so i would probably be getting around 100 points again).

So yeah i lost, but it made me better. As long as you are aware of your skill set vs. someone else's and you wont let it consume you i don't see it as a bad thing (assuming the other player is not a complete jerk).

siffland··on FBI warns that connected televisions can provide hackers a window into homes
When i got a new TV last year, the kid at Best Buy thought it was funny i wanted a non smart TV. I managed to get a 55" with no networking or applications. I know i am the minority, but i just want the TV to turn on and display a picture. i have a blu-ray player that is like 8 years old. It has netflix and vudu and MLB and about 4 more apps. None can work anymore, they stop updating devices after a year or so. I would rather have a roku or something that gets updated.

siffland··on China
Just for a clarification, when I said

"Voting 3rd party exercises your right to say you don't like either of the other 2 candidates"

I actually voted for a third party, i liked better than the other 2. It was not a protest. I did just read your link and won't denounce him as anything, but I do think telling people who vote for someone they like who is not in the main 2 parties that their vote was a "throw-away" is again not a good thing.

We will have to agree to disagree on this. Although it is interesting in some other countries where there are more than 2 parties that do all compete.

siffland··on China
I have someone I work with who quite literally mocks people for voting for a 3rd party and actually tries to "shame" them for it, usually using a line like "which means he is voting to keep the incumbent in" (usually with more colorful words about the incumbent and the voter).

Voting 3rd party exercises your right to say you don't like either of the other 2 candidates. I will not argue which candidate it will help, but i think this line of thinking is detrimental to our voting process and wrong to rub in peoples faces.

siffland··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
So it is

$129 for the device, $9.99 Per month, $x.xx for the internet connection you require at all time due to no offline play, $x.xx to buy titles that you can only play with said internet connection.

At least now you CAN buy games you can play offline with the other consoles and PC. If someone came up with Movies Anywhere for video games so i could buy it once and play on any console i would be cool with this, but 20 years from now when you get that nostalgia and want to pull the Stadia out and play that one game....well you can't (unless it is still around, but then they will pull games from stores due to licensing, maybe because it has that one song on it and it is copyright....). At least with a physical game and ps4 or xbox1 there are usually ways to play without internet on some games.

I bet with the data mining and everything they will do fun stuff like have real time ads play on billboards in games targeting you and other such fun stuff (maybe they do that already in games, i have never looked).

I think the tech is cool and some people will love it. Not sure if it is what i would want to invest in.

siffland··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
cough Nintendo Virtual Boy cough

Imagine buying that and only getting 22 Games total.......Good call on waiting on the Oculus Rift

siffland··on Ex-FDA Advisor Says of Lasik Eye Surgery: ‘It Should Have Never Been Approved’
I was also told in 15 to 20 years i might need glasses again (late 50's, early 60's). I am cool with that.

I once had contacts, they did work OK. My issues were that i suck at putting things in my eye. I never got comfortable putting them in, i know that is a personal issue not the fault of the contacts. Also my contacts had to be weighted for some reason (i cannot recall why), and if my eye got dry they would shift and things would become blurry and i had to use eye drops or tear up (didn't happen a lot, but enough to annoy me). Plus i still needed a set of glasses.

Kind of off topic, my other half, she was making fun of my reading glasses, one day she was struggling to read something and i slapped them on her face and her response was OMG. I laughed, went to take them off her and lets just say i had to go buy myself a new pair (she confiscated them). It is interesting that people think readers are only for older people or you need a prescription, she wishes she would of gotten a pair 5 years ago.

siffland··on Ex-FDA Advisor Says of Lasik Eye Surgery: ‘It Should Have Never Been Approved’
I wanted LASIK so bad starting around 2010, I had worn glasses since I was 6 for my astigmatism. The reason I did not get it was because someone I worked with had a friend who they messed up one of his eyes and he was legally blind. My sister got it in 2015 and I kept putting it off. In 2018 i was turning 40 and needed readers, the eye doctor said i should get bifocals or LASIK and readers.

I got LASIK in September of 2018, I did my 1 year checkup in September of this year and am seeing 20/15. I used eye drops as instructed and now I don't need them. I still use readers for little print (or more light), but I knew I would need to going into this.

No regrets, except I should of done it years ago.

siffland··on Netflix, HBO and Cable Giants Are Coming for Password Sharers
I have netflix, hulu, sling and amazon (mostly for prime delivery). The family asked me if i would get Disney, i said no. Kind of wanted to watch the Picard series, but not going to get CBS access (or whatever it is on) for 1 show. I will wait to see if it survives a few seasons and get the dvd's or something. Just tired of the streaming fragmentation, and the cable is no better because it is missing all the content and way to expensive.

The entire scene is frustrating, perhaps it is just me. I now watch a lot less than i use to, it is pretty much just put on "Family Guy" or "Rick and Morty" in the background and do other things (i have all those on DVD's so i just set the plex player to keep playing, although now plex is going to stream to....sighhhh)

siffland··on In Praise of the 5-Hour Workday and Other ‘Radical’ Ideas
It is interesting, but then you get into jobs where you cannot shorten the work week, such as Police or TSA workers or other such things. There are tons of thankless jobs that pretty much are built around having to work the 40(+) hours, some just require travel, some are hard to get people to apply for (honestly, when was the last time you thanked the TSA people at the airport for making you take your shoes off and scan you, or the cable guy who had to rerun the wire from the pole to your house in the dark at 8:30pm).

I would love to work only 5 hours a day, although i might get bored. I guess it might work better with salaried employees.

siffland··on We Stood Up to a Patent Troll and Won
It would be awesome if someone would create an online database not just against blackbird, but against all patent trolls, like every time a patent trollish lawsuit is brought forth, just add the company and all their patents and go to town.

oh wait does someone have a patent about "a database of prior art for patent trolls patents".......

siffland··on Gitlab considers not hiring SREs and Support Engineers in China and Russia
One would this the best solution for this would be a Federated structure that would ensure a Chinese Systems administrator could only deal with whatever resources assigned (China maybe) and a US administrator can only work with whatever resources are assigned (U.S customers??). Therefore you can have the separation of data but please everyone.

I am not saying it would be simple to iron out, but it would allow for distrusting customers to all play together without worrying about data compromise.

Just a thought, i read all the comments and they are about politics and such and very few are about a technical solution to work for all.

One can argue only letting a Chinese Administrator work on a subset is again a geopolitical thing, but that point should be moot if other administrators are restricted as well.
