sidko··on AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol again in match 2 of 5
Seeing the way chess computers have evolved, this won't be far into the future. There are several tournaments just for chess computers, and it is very hard even for grandmasters to follow every more. Somehow, after a 20-move sequence that appears to accomplish nothing, one side is slightly up, and the rest of the game is decided.
sidko··on Flipkart’s valuation markdown
Can you elaborate on your comment that Amazon is imitating Flipkart to an extent? Are there specific examples where Amazon is doing this? Is it possible to learn from the Indian market and bring those ideas to a more global audience?

sidko··on Getting ahead vs. doing well
>Imagine the minimum wage were doubled, do you think McDonald's would respond by laying off half their staff?

No, but a person will definitely think twice before starting a new McDonald's franchise. A small restaurant owner who had been eyeing a second location will think twice about opening up another restaurant.

The incentives will also shift towards higher automation (not necessarily a good or bad thing in and of itself) of tasks as much as possible instead of hiring humans.

Companies don't work like this: "We have X amount of work to do, no matter what it costs". It's more along the lines of whether a project is a net positive (say through a net present value analysis) and if it isn't, then the whole project is scrapped.

sidko··on All NYC Subway Stations to Receive Wi-Fi by End of 2016
Perhaps because New York's Subway is much older? It's more than a 100 years old, and has been remarkably resilient through the decades. Of course it has many problems as already pointed out in this discussion thread, but it's an engineering marvel in an of itself when it was built, given the constraints.

sidko··on The Dawn of the Space Mining Age
Are you aware of any publicly traded company operating in this field? If not, then there won't be any mutual funds. This area seems too new for mutual funds.
sidko··on Banks Forgot Who Was Supposed to Own Dell Shares
Except, individuals don't own accounts at DTC, so you'll have to hack and twiddle a few bits here and there of the custodial bank as well. But these are reconciled each day against Security Position Reports generated at the end of the day, so your bits need to reconcile with trades. So you need to hack and twiddle a few bits here and there for a chosen counterparty as well. Except, the exchanges keep track of trades too, so you'll have to twiddle a few bits here and there for an exchange as well.

It's not as simple as this at all, which is why the system has existed for decades. It's not the most efficient, but it's not something that will be replaced by a hackathon project either.

sidko··on Robinhood app – free stock trading
Hopefully they give all the documents required for tax on time. If they don't, you can always patch it together through your account statements (more work, of course).

There are a few things like ability to see dividends immediately (as opposed to seeing them on monthly statements) that are not yet added. However, you can trade all stocks for free, which is hard to beat.

sidko··on Can a Market Predict Political Outcomes?
Aren't prediction markets illegal in the United States? (I am completely against making them illegal, but wondering how they plan to operate in the US)
sidko··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
Apple doesn't need to target the low end. They seem to be doing just fine, making the largest quarterly profit in history by not indulging in a race to bottom in search of market share.
sidko··on First U.S. Bitcoin Exchange Set to Open
>However, it is the first US bitcoin exchange with some amount of money transmitter licenses

Not true. There are definitely exchanges out there that have state MSB licenses. Perhaps you're unaware of their existence. I know companies can sometimes be secretive about this stuff, but exchanges like CoinX have MSB state licenses. Check out http://coinx.com/money-transmitter-licenses for instance.

sidko··on Obama likely to expand a foreign-student pipeline the high-tech industry loves
Without foreign born workers, half of Silicon Valley wouldn't have existed. Is that a good enough reason?
sidko··on As Many as 5K .Com’s Taken Away by Sealed Court Order by Verisign
Another incident that tells us we need to move towards something more decentralized. Namecoin is an excellent concept and idea, it's a pity it is not used and supported more widely.
sidko··on Circle Emerges From Stealth To Bring Bitcoin To The Masses
> "I'm not charged for using my own money" You are, you just don't know it because it isn't apparent. In fact, they want to make it appear that you're making money for spending money! Ultimately, it doesn't matter who bears the additional cost of using credit/debit cards, it results in higher prices for everyone and since credit card agencies prohibit differential pricing, it punishes people who pay cash.

Bitcoin still has a long long way to go and won't replace the existing system anytime soon, but definitely watch out for retailers who already provide a steep discount for using Bitcoin. That will be a good first step.

sidko··on Suggest to HN: 1 downvote should cost 2 karma.
Can't help but wonder how many downvotes this is going to get.
sidko··on Hold on to your wallet: Doug Henwood on the Bitcoin scam
Another extremely ill-conceived criticism of Bitcoin. "However, the cyber-currency’s greatest proponents are libertarians" and thus the entire piece is about an idiotic and narrow vision of politics without, obviously, any consideration to Bitcoin as a technology. I mean, who cares about an emerging technology right?

Also, " the insights of a Marxist-feminist professional dominatrix named Mistress Magpie". Yes, we should all be looking at developing the next generation technology that might or might not be a cornerstone to get 6 billion people banking services based on the insights of a professional dominatrix. You can't make these up.

There are many valid criticisms of Bitcoin. The article, unfortunately, mentions not a single one.

sidko··on Google's Street View computer vision can beat reCAPTCHA with 99% accuracy
And how would you deal with the fact that an algorithm could always intentionally provide the wrong answer? It's a losing game.
sidko··on Auroracoin: The First National Cryptocurrency?
Prices of cryptocurrencies are notoriously hard to predict in the long run. If it can maintain this price though, you're right - it will provide a very strong incentive for people to go and claim their AURs. That should help with the adoption inside Iceland too.
sidko··on Ask HN: Anyone experienced with donations instead of adsense?
Probably worth a shot anyway. There are some good startups working on micro-payments. BitWall is one of them (that ran a test on Chicago Sun Times) that you might check out. In the Bitcoin world, Coinbase has an easy widget you can install for donating Bitcoins. Sorry if this reply isn't very helpful or not what you're looking for, these are just the options I know. Good luck!
sidko··on Lenovo Agrees to Buy IBM Server Business for $2.3 Billion
IBM is a private company, it isn't owned by the US Government.
sidko··on Tiger Mom: Some races are just better

sidko··on Bitcoin Alternative 'Dogecoin' Hacked, 21 Million Coins Stolen
In another news, Euro alternative US Dollar Hacked by bank robbers.
sidko··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin price increasing?
You can gain a rough estimate based on the delivery schedules of ASICs in the market. You can calculate the pre-orders placed for xGH/s and multiply that by how many were pre-ordered. This should give a rough estimate of how much hash-power will be added in the future.

Current market situation - it's definitely going up.

sidko··on Bitcoin is undergoing deflation, not inflation.
Inflation is an increase in money supply which is what is happening today with the number of Bitcoins in production. Eventually it will be deflationary because coins get lost.

Inflation has nothing to do with price volatility. Something that cost 10 Bitcoins yesterday might cost 1 Bitcoin today and 2 Bitcoins tomorrow. It doesn't mean that Bitcoin is deflationary today and inflationary tomorrow.

(Good job removing all comments on your blog that don't agree with your flawed definitions)

sidko··on Here’s who probably did that $150 million Bitcoin transaction
Depends on where you first entered the 'system' that makes you reveal your identity. For example, if you buy on localbitcoins in a face to face exchange without the need of identification, it wouldn't be feasible to track the Bitcoins to your real identity. Sovereign money to Bitcoin conversion is the spot where identities are revealed. Otherwise, it remains pseudonymous.
sidko··on Here’s who probably did that $150 million Bitcoin transaction
They've always tagged the seized coins either with 'Silkroad seized coins' or 'DPR seized coins' in the past. e.g. https://blockchain.info/address/1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5G...
sidko··on Bitcoin hits all time high at $844 USD
That was on MtGox and BTC China, this is on Bitstamp. The price differences between exchanges can be huge and sometimes confusing white quoting highs.
sidko··on Bitcoin vulnerability
You should try it, and update us with how many Bitcoins you were able to get this way :)
