sideshowb··on Show HN: Visualize the entropy of a codebase with a 3D force-directed graph
Very pretty!

Out of interest, I'm thinking how this sort of method works if you ignore the semi-arbitrary distinction between your own code and other libraries. If, say, an array class is used everywhere, wouldn't that look like a bad pattern on the dependency graph? Or is there a way to read the graph that tells you that your pervasive use of np.array is still appropriately decoupled?

It's not the successful website that turns to seo spam, it's seo spammers that spam the StumbleUpon api with bots "liking" their spam.
sideshowb··on Behind the scenes: the struggle for each paper (2021)
I think desirability of page limits is very subject specific. Some people will just waffle if you don't give them a page limit. Other times it means there's not room for the technical details.

sideshowb··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
I like the idea but seems like there would be big problems. Like detecting if a work is reworded. Or a large number of sources have all slightly influenced a small response - isn't that pretty much considered new knowledge?

Then there's the issue that however you credit attribution, it creates a game of enshittified content creation with the aim of being attributed as often as possible, regardless of whether the content really offered anything that wasn't out there already.

sideshowb··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
As a kid programming games in BBC basic on the Archimedes, I didn't know how to do graphics with things moving around smoothly, but I found some code for changing the sprite for the mouse pointer and moving it to a desired location on screen.

Guess how I implemented my main character.

sideshowb··on A connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
How is productivity measured in their study though? As it's survey based I presume self reported?

I worry that expectations may have a confounding effect: those required to work long hours may feel less productive relative to the higher expectations of their work culture?

I could well believe they actually are less productive as well, on some objective scale, but not sure a survey could prove this.

sideshowb··on The first electro-mechanical desktop synthesizer
The trumpet on my prophesy ain't half bad but yes I concede that point.

For synthetic sounds however, at this point I think it's mostly a question of workflow. Like yes you can take time to program all those imperfections into a digital sound. Or you can take time to make an analog device which has them inherently.

sideshowb··on The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge
I think you misunderstand my reply. I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm trying to express disagreement without reaching for the downvote button, is all :-)
sideshowb··on The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge
I disagree. Yes #1 was best. I thought #2 was the weakest link, but with the redeeming feature of getting you to #3 and #4. Are they perfect, no, but they do have good moments aplenty and I thought the ending worth the journey.

Edit: thinking back, the ending of #2 was bloody spectacular as well. I think the sheer volume of character/world building must help as preparation for impactful endings.

> minor medieval squabbles

Are you perchance channelling that space-Usenet poster who was utterly dismissive of the main plot until the very end? ;-)

Parent comment should be marked SPOILERS, this one also.

Srsly tho, I appreciate your perspective. I found the dog part a little slow at times but still super interesting due to their collective identity which was explored quite a lot. As such it wasn't just a medieval squabble, it was entirely in keeping with the nature-of-consciousness theme that permeated the space part of the story.

sideshowb··on Strategies for making reproducible research the norm
Perhaps the core issue is that academia excels at being a textbook case of goodhart's law. If/when reproducibility became a target then the academic system would/will likely make an equally bad mess as it has with its current targets.

Indeed. Without wanting to disappear down a philosophical rabbit hole, I think you hit the nail on the head there.

sideshowb··on World's most popular painter sent his followers after me because of my review
I don't think the coding analogy holds at all. To me, writing good working maintainable software of non trivial complexity is craft, and to call it that is high praise indeed. I'm not entirely sure what art is, but I think it tends to happen when someone wants to create for the sake of creating, rather than maximising commercial gain, status, or whatever. It's orthogonal to craft.

I enjoyed the Picasso museum in Barcelona and it was indeed eye opening to see his conventional but excellent architectural drawings ;-)

sideshowb··on World's most popular painter sent his followers after me because of my review
Isn't the craft part harder than the art part though? Far too much craftless art out there imo.

TBF it's not supposed to be a direct democracy.

You can start a campaign. They can bring about change, in the long run. If a think tank was campaigning for something you didn't like, I bet you'd be first to complain about it...
