sideshowb··on Diesel shop fined $10M for making and selling Emissions Defeat Devices
Given that diesels emit particulates and nox as well as co2, I'll note it's theoretically possible to tune them in a way that increases efficiency at the cost of other pollutants. I've no idea what the actual devices sold do, though.

Intentional pun?

sideshowb··on The Santander UK iOS app is 613 MB and 35% of it does nothing
But they're all crud apps, on a system that already has a webview! Why do any need to be over 100k?

Why is benchmarking dbs illegal?
sideshowb··on Microsoft formally deprecates the Windows Control Panel
And yet, back in the 90s most of the non-experienced users learned to use their computer nonetheless, in some cases gaining deeper understanding through the process of navigating the logically structured interface.

Maybe it's more profitable to keep your users inexperienced. Easier to sell them cruft that way.

sideshowb··on We need to liberate the Postcode Address File
I know - my van broke down recently, had the same experience even though I could describe the location exactly by intersection of roads, or grid reference.

As I had a smartphone they did at least have a link I could click which would give me my w3w location, which I had to read back to them.

sideshowb··on We need to liberate the Postcode Address File
If only we had a system of national grid references since, say, 1936

Don't worry I can be pretentious enough without having to invoke artists you've never heard of; it's not about that!

I have a broader concern for how new artists are supposed to get discovered without a promotion engine behind them. Yes it's always been hard to get started, but the distribution of attention has really become much more top heavy in recent years. I know one guy who played Wembley stadium and still couldn't give up his day job which he was sure he would have been able to do following a gig of that size in the 90s. Yeah so he had a good number of monthly listeners, but it illustrates how the distribution has changed.

Plenty of people on the long tail deserve to be discovered, and use of AI to recommend music - in place of collaborative filtering - really has the potential to fix that.

PS. We were talking monthly listeners weren't we, so you'll be excited to know that fractional fans exist already ;-)

But you have to select an obscure artist first. Hence why the music attention economy is winner-takes-all these days.
sideshowb··on Transformers in music recommendation
Yeah, but I want to hear the long tail of good music with bad promotion and under 10 monthly listeners.
sideshowb··on Transformers in music recommendation
The trouble with "people who listened to X also listened to Y" is it can't ever recommend music that nobody has listened to yet, and is unlikely to recommend anything that doesn't have a reasonable quantity of listeners already, hence likely some level of promotion behind it.

Why phase out smoking? I thought you just said having your parents tell you not to smoke worked just fine.
sideshowb··on MPPP – The first 'designer drug' disaster (2023)
Good for you. I'm sure all the parents whose children have died taking unknown dosages of unknown substances will take great comfort in your story.
sideshowb··on MPPP – The first 'designer drug' disaster (2023)
Especially our kids. Would be so much safer than them being tempted to buy from some sketchy dude in a night club.

Though other things fit this description which are not deep learning. Like (shameless plug) my recent paper here https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10497907

So this other guy: he's a Terminator like you, right?

Not like me. A T-1000, advanced prototype.

You mean more advanced than you are?

Yes. A mimetic polyalloy.

What the hell does that mean?

Tiny rubber spheres.

sideshowb··on AI used well can restore middle class jobs [pdf]
Ok so gp was talking about businesses. You are talking about the fact that money is power which is a fundamental problem, though a different one. Not sure how to solve it but stronger controls on political donations and lobbying would help.
sideshowb··on AI used well can restore middle class jobs [pdf]
I'd like to see that math expanded because I'm not sure I follow. Just because some (even if all) companies want to bleed the world dry, they aren't all colluding. If Tesco put up their prices it's not going to derail my middle class lifestyle, I'll just go shop at lidl instead. If my employer cuts pay in real terms then that's certainly a tougher situation which is why we have a union, but though it may be hassle, middle class people have been known to change jobs.
