shwaj··on Nvidia to buy assets from Groq for $20B cash
Inference being profitable doesn’t mean that they’re selling enough inference to offset their other costs.
shwaj··on Nvidia to buy assets from Groq for $20B cash
Groq is very different from TPUs. The difference in memory should be a big clue. (Groq using SRAM built into each compute unit, vs TPUs using HBM more similarly to GPUs)
shwaj··on Some Epstein file redactions are being undone
Rather than bemoaning the ignorance of those who can’t grasp that the text still exists under black rectangles, we should thank our lucky stars that this method of deredacting still works, well over a decade after the first time I heard of it.

May it continue to work in the decades to come!

shwaj··on Jonathan Blow has spent the past decade designing 1,400 puzzles
We don’t know that, AFAICT (after reading the Ars article and the Bluesky post). Some of the puzzles are probably reused, and other new ones using the same mechanics may have been written. I’m not sure why you’d so confidently state “Blow didn’t design these puzzles at all”… do you have something against him personally?
shwaj··on SHARP, an approach to photorealistic view synthesis from a single image
Agreed. The head of the fly also seems to have weird depth.
shwaj··on NVIDIA frenemy relation with OpenAI and Oracle
Why? Wash trading is about selling and then requiring the same asset for tax purposes. How is this analogous, other than that you presumably dislike both practices?
shwaj··on Google confirms Android attacks; no fix for most Samsung users
It’s “Fuchsia” with a “chs” not a “sch”. Where do you get your information that it’s dead?
shwaj··on I failed to recreate the 1996 Space Jam website with Claude
“it”
shwaj··on Claude 4.5 Opus’ Soul Document
Well said, except for the last sentence:

Just because everyone does it doesn’t mean one isn’t a sinner for doing it.

shwaj··on Anthropic acquires Bun
The bet, (I would have thought) obviously, is that AI will be a huge part of humanity’s future, and that Anthropic will be able to get a big piece of that pie.

This is (I would have thought) obviously different from selling dollars for $0.50, which is a plan with zero probability of profit.

Edit: perhaps the question was meant to be about how Bun fits in? But the context of this sub-thread has veered to achieving a $7 billion revenue.

shwaj··on Poll HN: What operating system do you primarily develop on?
I use VSCode on a Mac, using remote SSH to edit code on a remote Linux machine. So I voted twice

I’ve never been able to get used to default Linux key bindings, and never been able to customize them to feel quite right.

shwaj··on A Remarkable Assertion from A16Z
It’s an inadvertent step toward Newspeak, where we no longer have a word that means what “literally” used to unambiguously mean.
shwaj··on A new bridge links the math of infinity to computer science
Another glaring example:

> Set theorists use the language of logic, computer scientists the language of algorithms.

Computer science doesn’t use logic? Hello, Booleans.

So lazy, especially when you can ask an AI to tell you if you’re saying something stupid.

shwaj··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
Are you asking whether the whole podcast can be boiled down to that translation, or whether you can infer/translate that from the title?

If the former, no. If the latter, sure, approximately.

shwaj··on Google Antigravity
Informally, people will way “antigrav”.
shwaj··on Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance: the story of learned avoidance
It’s not a tautology. Check out the work of Michael Levin (easily accessible on YouTube) for examples of non-genetic heritability.
shwaj··on A new Google model is nearly perfect on automated handwriting recognition
Can current LLMs actually do that, though? What Ilya posed was a thought experiment: if it could do that, then we would say that it has understanding. But AFAIK that is beyond current capabilities.
shwaj··on Steam Frame
Not sure, probably depends on the content too. When you read text, the eye definitely isn’t jumping “arbitrarily”, it’s clustered around what you’re focusing on. Might be different for a FPS game where you’re looking out for ambushes.

I’m not sure what you mean by “look through the entire image to reacquire the iris”? You’re talking about the image from the eye tracking camera?

shwaj··on iPhone Pocket
Fanny packs: so uncool! Man-purses (or “murses” in my corner of the world): so righteous!
shwaj··on Steam Frame
I would guess that the “foveated” region that they stream is larger than the human fovea, large enough to contain the saccades movement (with some good-enough probability).
shwaj··on iPhone Pocket
lol! What corner is that?
shwaj··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
You missed the point: they were referring to the sentiment that lead to Trump’s election. Many of those voters , I would guess, feel that the way Trump is doing it is cruel and chaotic.

This obviously doesn’t imply that those who voted for Trump on this basis want to go back to the open border Biden days.

shwaj··on Ruby and Its Neighbors: Smalltalk
I used to find it amusing that you could say `Smalltalk := nil` in the early days of Squeak, and poof! all the classes in your system are garbage collected.

(I’m not sure that’s exactly what happened, probably the system crashed before garbage collection could happen. But it was definitely a guaranteed insta-crash).

shwaj··on BlackRock's Larry Fink: "Tokenization", Digital IDs, & Social Credit
Maybe Klaus shouldn’t have said it then.
shwaj··on Backpropagation is a leaky abstraction (2016)
Hear hear, one of my favorite comments recently.

Can’t agree more about the technical points (category error etc), and then the unexpected switch to the value of receiving constructive criticism as a gift not an attack.

Myself, I’m definitely conditioned to receive it as an attack. I’m trying to break this habit. This morning I gave some extensive feedback to some friends who have a startup. The whole time I was writing it, I was stressing out that they’d feel attacked, because that’s how I might take similar criticism.

How was it actually received? A mix I think. Some people explicitly received it as a gift, and others I’m not so sure.

shwaj··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
The part about noticing web pages loading (at most) 8ms faster due to the display is total nonsense. Many can notice the difference between 60 and 120Hz when scrolling, but definitely not for a page load. That’s less than 1/10th of the blink of an eye.

If page load seems noticeably faster, it’s far more likely that it’s simply a faster machine. Or imaginary.

shwaj··on Denmark reportedly withdraws Chat Control proposal following controversy
Nobody’s talking about a blood oath to promise never to revisit the issue. But there’s a different between leaving the door open to future reconsideration, versus pushing consistently against the wishes of the public and only backing off temporarily for tactical reasons.

And for some reason, once these things pass, it’s a one way door. When does the US public get a chance to reconsider the Patriot Act?

shwaj··on Extropic is building thermodynamic computing hardware
I think what they meant was:

Two linear transformations compose into a single linear transformation. If you have y = W2(W1*x) = (W2*W1)*x = W*x where W = W2*W1, you've just done one matrix multiply instead of two. The composition of linear functions is linear.

The ReLU breaks this because it's nonlinear: ReLU(W1*x) can't be rewritten as some W*x, so W2(ReLU(W1*x)) can't collapse either.

Without nonlinearities like ReLU, many layers of a neural network could be collapsed into a single matrix multiplication. This inherently limits the function approximation that it can do, because linear functions are not very good at approximating nonlinear functions. And there are many nonlinearities involved in modeling speech, video, etc.

shwaj··on Grokipedia and the coup against reality
Sorry, for which crimes? I know the justice system is flawed, but ideally shouldn’t there be specific laws that are broken, to justify imprisonment?
shwaj··on Keep Android Open
Yes, I recall HN commenters of the time predicting this exact outcome as a result.
