shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
Our mobile version is based on cheeaun's http://cheeaun.github.com/hnmobile/landing/ project but we're still working on it. We tried jQuery mobile but found it too slow, that was 6 months ago, maybe its improved.

No problem, just let us know what you think.
shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
Yeah we do store a copy of the site (just HTML not other assets) but we don't really offer archiving of the site at the moment. Currently any page gets re-indexed when someone edits the meta data (title, description etc) that we store with the bookmark. We could easily add a user 'reindex' button.

It's all built with Google App Engine using their Text Search feature.

There's no free trial from the site but I've just created the voucher code HNTRIAL which should give the first 50 Hacker News readers a two month free trial. Enjoy!

This is my commuting project, looking for some feedback to see if my 'me too' project has any chance of standing out. Thanks.

Edit: Use the voucher code HNTRIAL for a two month trial.

shutton··on Show HN: Survey Builder with Drag/Drop Logic Branching
Looks really nice, like the idea of visually laying out the survey, I guess this is what people do with pen and paper anyway. Some way of customizing the style of the survey would be useful for embedding on your own site.
shutton··on Facebook has 1 billion monthly active users
Rough numbers for popular web mail services.

GMail ~425M Hotmail ~350M Yahoo ~300M

shutton··on Facebook has 1 billion monthly active users
What will be the second site to hit that landmark, does it even exist yet?
shutton··on Why Bloom filters work the way they do
Very well written. It's the first technical CS article I've read in a while and really enjoyed it.
shutton··on Today is Goof Off at Work Day
Thought this was going to be about watching the London Olympics at your desk!
shutton··on Google App Engine SDK 1.7.0 released
It adds a paid for PageSpeed service ($0.39 per gigabyte) https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/adminconsole/pe...
shutton··on How people judge your intelligence and social skills based on your looks: Take 2
When showing similar types of data try to use the same type of graph. Once the reader has learnt to interpret results from one graph they can easily apply it to the next. It looks like you've cycle through every graph type Excel has to offer.

Other than that, quite interesting!

shutton··on Google App Engine performance tuning
Some interesting real world performance tuning examples.

Basically use db.get() over queries and pre-warm the cache at every opportunity.

shutton··on PyCharm 2.5 python IDE released.
I'm a .NET dev by day and use a Mac for my own stuff on evenings/weekends (mainly Python, Django and JS/Html/CSS).  When I do need to do .NET I find bootcamp and Parallels are more than sufficient.   I personally think Apple make the best hardware regardless what OS you're using.
shutton··on PyCharm 2.5 python IDE released.
Yeah, sitting at around 7% for me on a 2011 MBP i7, can't remember what it was before I upgraded. I've not noticed worse battery life though.
shutton··on How I built a Hacker News mobile web app, Part 2
Thanks again for another great post.

I agree entirely about HNmobile being a non-standalone app. I've being working on something similar and after considering deploying it as a standalone webapp or even wrapping it with PhoneGap and submitting it to the app store I've gone with a non-standalone web app. Basically if a substantial part of your 'app' is opening links in mobile safari then keeping the app in a traditional browser environment (with back button etc) gives the best user experience.

shutton··on Single Page Web Apps with Backbone.js
Good post. I'm similarly happy with how Backbone adds a lightweight structure to my project and guides you into doing REST correctly.

I'm using it in a project which uses appcache and localstorage which means return visitors can load the entire app without a single round trip to the server and can even use it offline.

shutton··on Create CSS sprites
That's pretty cool. The easiest CSS sprite generation I've seen.
shutton··on Twss.js
that's what she said
shutton··on Google persuades large bank to use the cloud
Apparently its the biggest single deal Google has signed for its cloud services. Are financial services ready for the cloud now?
shutton··on Netflix live in the UK
Yeah, I'm sticking with iTunes, at least until they get more content on there.
