shrinks99··on Core Devices keeps stealing our work
What a bummer. It seems like what they're asking for here (a written agreement that users will be able to access 3rd party app stores) would be a win win win for Core Devices, Rebble, and users. Core Devices gets to look like a super good guy (ideally driving interest in the product), Rebble gets to look like a huge winner maintaining something for the community (as they are), and users get an open ecosystem.

There's still a chance for a win here, but looks like the door is closing.

You can see everything in your field of vision, but the area DIRECTLY in the centre has the highest level of detail. This image has high frequency animated details that are not cognisized equally by your entire FOV. The animated bit right in the middle at any given time is where your brain processes the most detail and also where you are looking.

Generally yes, but we're still working on it all these years later! This article by Chris Brejon offers a very in-depth look into the differences brought about by different display transforms: https://chrisbrejon.com/articles/ocio-display-transforms-and...

The "best" right now, in my opinion, is AgX, which at this point has various "flavours" that operate slightly differently. You can find a nice comparison of OCIO configs here: https://liamcollod.xyz/picture-lab-lxm/CAlc-D8T-dragon

Most of Blender's icons are actually made in Penpot which is also what the Blender foundation uses for UI prototyping. The brush icons are made in Blender though!

Serif (I guess Canva now) maintains their own which uses the Lensfun database.
shrinks99··on Affinity Studio now free
Yeah, but Lensfun (the library they use for this) doesn't have anywhere to donate.

I'd buy some of these explinations, except the depth estimation, colorization, and super-resolution ML models they use in the app DO run locally and are still subscription-gated.

Apple has been doing on-device machine learning for portrait blurs and depth estimation for years now, though based on the UI, this might use cloud inference as well.

Granted, these aren't the super heavy ones like generative fill / editing, and I understand that cloud inference isn't cheap. A subscription for cloud-based ML features is something I'd find acceptable, and today that's what has launched... The real question is what they plan to do with this in 2-5 years. Will more non-"AI" features make their way into the pro tier? Only time will tell!

shrinks99··on Dithering – Part 1
A friend of mine wrote one for Go with the goal of creating the best and most complete dithering library out there and I think he did a decent job. Worth a look if you're looking for reference implementations!

Here's his: https://github.com/makew0rld/dither

I think Meshroom can use LIDAR data as an input now? I used it years ago for photogrammetry and camera tracking for some VFX work and it's an incredibly solid suite of open source tools for these types of tasks.
shrinks99··on IRS open sources its fact graph
Having talked at length with one of the developers from 18F at a conference who was fired along with many of the other folks that worked on Direct File, I can assure you that it's no longer being worked on.

The 2024 site remains up so people can file their taxes for that year, but it will no longer be updated.

shrinks99··on Scientists say X has lost its professional edge and Bluesky is taking its place
Sharply declining usage? I don't see the stats to back that up on https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats

Usage has absolutely declined from peak switching periods where inevitibly some users won't stick around, but that's to be expected. Most stats seem to be leveling off (which isn't exactly stable growth either so the rest of your points stand).

shrinks99··on GitHub was having issues
Between Tangled, GitLab, Codeburg (Forgejo), and Gitea there's quite a lot of decent alternatives now compared to when GitHub first sold to MS. Having the entire world of FOSS integrated in one development platform was convenient but I'm more excited by the possibilities for more innovation in the space.
shrinks99··on Copyparty – Turn almost any device into a file server
From the readme:

> NOTE: full bidirectional sync, like what nextcloud and syncthing does, will never be supported! Only single-direction sync (server-to-client, or client-to-server) is possible with copyparty

Worth noting that if you're considering using Nextcloud this may be a dealbreaker... But if it's not, I would also recommend not using Nextcloud!

Their 2016 post on how they render their lines is really nice and full of cool images: https://blog.transitapp.com/how-we-built-the-worlds-pretties...
shrinks99··on I wrote my PhD Thesis in Typst
Very cool! I ran into the multiple bibliography issue when attempting to typeset my grandmother's PHD thesis which I was able to rescue from the 5.25" floppies it was originally stored on. I was planning on waiting until they solved this officially to resume that side project, but might give Alexandria a shot!
shrinks99··on Convert photos to Atkinson dithering
Woah cool web component!
shrinks99··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
The Canadian government doesn't provide a DirectFile equivalent. The closest thing we have is Wealthsimple's tax software which just _happens_ to be free (and for what it's worth, in my experience, is also pretty good).

I would love for the Canadian government to release free tax software analogous to DirectFile!

shrinks99··on Lossless video compression using Bloom filters
Lossless formats (specifically DPX & EXR sequences, usually with ZIP compression) are used frequently for real world footage in post-production workflows! Granted, most consumers don't run into this stuff. Photographers don't use PNG because it doesn't offer anything for them that camera raw or EXR files don't already cover.

Microsoft uses Clippy for the paperclip emoji in the Fluent Emoji set. The trademark is why the open source version of Fluent Emoji doesn't use Clippy's likeness.
shrinks99··on Linkwarden: FOSS self-hostable bookmarking with AI-tagging and page archival
Webrecorder's WACZ signing spec (https://specs.webrecorder.net/wacz-auth/latest) does some of this — authenticating the identity of who archived it and at what time — but the rest of what you're asking for (legitimacy of the content itself) is an unsolved problem as web content isn't all signed by its issuing server.

In some of the case studies Starling (https://www.starlinglab.org/) has published, they've published timestamps of authenticated WACZs to blockchains to prove that they were around at a specific time... More _layers_ of data integrity but not 100% trustless.
