shpx··on 97% of American adults own a cellphone or smartphone (2021)
The sample is "1,502 U.S. adults from Jan. 25 to Feb. 8, 2021, by cellphone and landline phone" if this is the same survey as linked in this article

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/01/13/share-of-th...

it links to this methodology document in the "How we did this" dropdown:

https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Tech-...

I agree with your point. Do they account for the number of Americans that don't have a phone at all somehow or should the real headline be "97% of American adults that can be called by cellphone or landline own a cellphone or smartphone"?

shpx··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Instead of an S3 bucket you can use GitHub Pages. You push stuff to the upstream git repo and it gets deployed. It’s free (you have to pay for GitHub Pro if you don’t want to make the source code publicly available) and comes with Fastly CDN if I recall correctly. You just have to configure your custom domain.

I think if any large player in the market or the entire market acts in any sort of trivially predictable way then you can extract money from it by manipulating it.

shpx··on Why can’t we get a handle on this safety thing? (1998)
Flying machines seem unsafe because the pilot has limited control. Birds can quickly change the shape of their wing more drastically than planes or hang gliders, so there are less unrecoverable situations.
shpx··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
If many of these thousands of tech people start just spending their large savings and not working, that could lead to more inflation.
shpx··on Unix time is bad and needs replacement, not UTC
If we’re going to change the timestamp let’s do it correctly this time and start counting from 0001-01-01 (like “ticks” in C#) or 0000-01-01 because adding another number (1970) for other people to have to learn about and memorize is bad design and unnecessary overhead and one subgroup of one profession naming a whole time epoch was kind of pretentious. It would also have the added benefit of being hard to confuse a value in this timestamp with a Unix timestamp.
shpx··on Computer Latency: 1977-2017
iPads predict user input https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/touches_pres... . Did they do this back when this article was written or is this a newer thing that lets them get to even lower user perceived latencies than 30ms?

In general, predicting user input to reduce latency is a great idea and we should do more of it, as long as you have a good system for rolling back mispredictions. Branch prediction is such a fundamental thing for CPUs that it's surprising to me that it doesn't exist at every level of computing. The JavaScript REPL's (V8's REPL) "eager evaluation" where it shows you the result of side-effect free expressions before you execute them is the kind of thing I'm thinking about https://developer.chrome.com/blog/new-in-devtools-68/#eagere...

shpx··on GitHub Copilot investigation
It seems like there's no good license that places absolutely no restrictions or requirements on people using your code (such as attribution and respecting patent rights) worldwide.

I want my code to be used the way people treated text in the old days. There's texts that have been re-written, added to and edited by thousands of people over the centuries and yet they don't come with thousands of pages of attribution notices because why would they?

shpx··on Whisper – open source speech recognition by OpenAI
We shouldn't call this open source. The model definition + the data is the source code. The model weights are a compilation artifact.

> The source code must be the preferred form in which a programmer would modify the program. [...] Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator are not allowed.

If I asked a programmer from OpenAI to modify the model to better support Japanese speakers from Hokkaido, their "preferred form" of the model's source code would include the 680,000 hours of audio used to train the model.

Yes that means that there are almost no open source models and yes it's awesome that they released this and made the weights available. Just don't call it open source.

shpx··on Wegmans ends self-checkout app after too much shoplifting
If it's just for fun and not a lot then the enjoyment she gets is probably worth more than the thing being stolen and the negative externalities of it. Some men do martial arts to practice violence, if she wants to practice thievery and it's not really hurting anyone then it's not great, but why not? We all have thieves in our family tree.

And you can reasonably guess that the "incident" it will create will be proportionate to the value of the thing being stolen. If you cause a scene over someone else not paying for a $2 candy bar, you're the asshole.
