shove··on The King of Silent Animation
Shout out to Raleigh NC’s Skip Elsheimer, AV Geeks https://avgeeks.com/
shove··on Where Johnny Cash came from
Prior to reading this, my only insight into Cash’s upbringing had been the recording from Folsom Prison in which the warden does a cringe-inducing introduction of Ray Cash, Johnny’s father.
shove··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
Also read Giovanni’s Room this year. So good.
shove··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
James Baldwin’s early novels and short stories: sublime

William Gibson, Neuromancer: finally went back and read this. It’s so culturally entrenched now, it’s hard to remember that it wasn’t always. Great example of a cautionary tale turned into a corporate roadmap.

Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse Five: first Vonnegut I’ve ever read, definitely more in 2024

Rick Ruben, The Creative Act: A successful guy trying to sound wise for hundreds of pages. It was ok, but ultimately boring.

shove··on Tech layoffs hitting Bay Area again. Here's why – and what comes next
Epic Games is a big local employer and they too have clawed back their pound of flesh
shove··on You don't need a CRDT to build a collaborative experience
As someone on the UX team for a product that just uses locks: LOL. Ok, but the suck index is pretty high.
shove··on TikTok 'aggressively' taking down videos about Bin Laden 'Letter to America'
I’m an anarchist. The US government shouldn’t exist in the first place.
shove··on TikTok 'aggressively' taking down videos about Bin Laden 'Letter to America'
The government bullying left-leaning foreign governments is chill though, right guys?
shove··on TikTok 'aggressively' taking down videos about Bin Laden 'Letter to America'
Except for the incredibly inconvenient and annoying coincidence that he happens to be right in his critiques of US foreign policy most of the time.
shove··on U.S. net saving as a percentage of gross national income
I’m “just looking for something to complain about” because you’re so busy looking for boots to lick
shove··on Implementing Mario's Stack Blur 15 times in C++ (with tests and benchmarks)
Mario is absolutely legendary in the creative coding space. Everything he does has that “how the hell did he do that?!” vibe, from the Flash/ActionScript stuff back in the day to some of the only actually interesting ML image generation work I’ve seen.
shove··on U.S. net saving as a percentage of gross national income
“Not by a lot”? The very chart you linked shows the median “share” dropping like 25% over the last 50 years.
shove··on The Unforeseen LSD Overdose of 1972
Not so profound
shove··on Solar
A nice surprise. Thanks for the links!
shove··on Solar
The data is whatever the data is, but measuring in nominal dollars sure seems like the wrong way to approach this. Did 40% more gigawatts get deployed or did the cost of installation labor account for some/most/all of that increase?
shove··on The US Military Is Getting Smaller, Cheaper and Smarter
You can measure in nominal dollars, inflation-adjusted dollars, percentage of GDP … or in the only way that matters in war: in comparison to your adversaries

Surprise! It’s neither getting smaller nor cheaper. Smarter? Well, war is pretty dumb … again, it ought to be compared to what we could be doing instead.

shove··on FFmpeg Explorer
Would it be possible to add more Richard Spencer getting punched? Never enough of that.
shove··on Thoughts on Flash (2010)
Subpar is really stretching it. With some care, Flash content could behave quite well on the iPhone. It was not 100% proprietary. Of course it wasn’t 100% open either, but then I direct your attention to the Apple App Store.

Edit: Flash Paper was hot garbage. Definitely not going to defend that one lol

shove··on Thoughts on Flash (2010)
Kevin was in an impossible position, he could have ripped Steve a new one and it wouldn’t have made a lick of difference.
shove··on Thoughts on Flash (2010)
A business decision pretending to be a technology decision. In the end, there were just as many shitty Flash sites as there were shitty iOS apps.

The legacy of this choice turns out to be the beginning-of-the-end for the broad market in high(er)-end, custom website development and the move towards the walled gardens of app stores and social media giants.

shove··on Too many fonts in Windows 10 can cause slow application starts
“In Windows 10” lol Go ask your favorite graphic designer if this sounds familiar regardless of OS platform or version.
shove··on A video game where you are an operating system
Very cool. Reminds me of the game posted last week (defcon thing?) in which Tetris-block-like squares containing op codes fall and the user has to position Rube Goldberg sequences that shuffle the biggest possible number into the “score” memory register
shove··on Researchers watched 100 hours of hackers hacking honeypot computers
Well … played

shove··on Template for Impactful Ideas
I can tell this guy walks the walk because midway through the essay I went, “Haha nice; he’s doing it right now—that’s so meta” and then sure enough the conclusion bore this out.
shove··on Ask HN: What's the coolest physical thing you've made?
I sewed a pair of KKK hoods and placed them atop the bronze heads of a local Confederate monument. Less than a year later that statue and a few more like it were removed due to the “safety concern” created by myself and a ton of other activists. I like to the “the coolest physical thing I’ve made” is helping make those goddamned statues disappear.
shove··on Just normal web things
The average modern SPA pulls in far more unnecessary JS than the average plain HTML site pulls in via redundant tag structure following the initial page load. Moreover, server-rendered HTML renders far more quickly because there tends to be fewer total requests and there’s no hiccup parsing the JS when it lands, much less the time it takes to execute it.

shove··on The infamous coin toss
The power that flows from value creation is “mild”, whereas the power that flows from political acumen is “direct and high”? Man cmon. Power is power. Have you not noticed the entire lobbying industry and who pays for the majority of it?
