sholanozie··on Show HN: Muusical – producthunt+pinterest for music
I've been playing around with a similar project and I think I have a few ideas that would add a lot of value to Muusical. I'm not sure if you're interested in collaborating, but I'd love to chat with you sometime. My e-mail is in my profile! :)
sholanozie··on Rust by Example
What kind of application is Rust well-suited for?
sholanozie··on CSS animated loading indicators
With Backbone.js: I usually just hide all views except for my "loadingView" (which is usually just a simple HTML element with a spinner/translucent background/etc.) while I'm retrieving data. When my data arrives, I hide the "loadingView" and display the data as usual. There are probably better approaches, but it works for my projects. Hope this helps.
sholanozie··on Why Class?
I might be a little late, but does anyone have any examples of simple CRUD web applications written in a functional language? There seems to be a lot of meta discussion about the suitability of functional programming for the web, but not very many concrete examples. Thanks!

Ah, I understand. Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic in your original post!

What's the difference between your suggestion & the 'new' feature?
sholanozie··on US Census API now available
I don't disagree with you, but for many people it's far more convenient to query an external API than to create their own.
sholanozie··on US Census API now available
The retrieval and processing of the data is done externally (i.e. not on your server).
sholanozie··on The Invisible Bank: How Kenya Has Beaten the World in Mobile Money
I think you're looking at the article in an overly-cynical way.

"M-Pesa is not an attempt to recreate developed countries’ banking systems in Africa. Instead, it’s an idea which has been tailored to the Kenyan environment. Rather than giving up on poor, isolated communities as unbankable, it has extended financial services to their most apparently unlikely customers."

Where exactly are the alternatives demonized? The author simply suggests that tailoring a solution to an environment (in this case, Kenya) is ultimately more beneficial to those within the environment than a one-size-fits-all approach that only serves a privileged few.

sholanozie··on Codename: Obtvse
I definitely see where you're coming from, I'm just commenting from an observational standpoint. I think that some people felt a little cheated by the "you can look but you can't touch" mentality of the blog post.

(I'm also a fan of dcurtis' work, including Svbtle, by the way).

sholanozie··on Codename: Obtvse
This is a flawed analogy, I think. What dcurtis did is more analogous to developing an algorithm, and then saying that only the smartest programmers doing the best work can use it.

Let's be honest here - there is nothing inherently special about the application except the hype and branding surrounding it. It's a blog. The design is good but it's just some text and a couple of buttons.

I don't think Obtvse should have used the same visual styling as Svbtle but this whole situation is clearly about more than just the application. Obtvse is a form of rebellion against egotism and exclusivity in a community founded on openness and transparency. When viewed in this light, I think the entire 'copied or not copied' debate is kind of meaningless.
