shlant··on The death of partying in the USA
bring the data to back your claims or be ignored like you are ignoring all the responses to you
shlant··on The death of partying in the USA
> affected by the corporate buying of single family homes

> after corps, we have foreign buyers also coming in with cash offers

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, these are memes that are not actually backed by data - commonly perpetuated by groups that blame most issues on billionaires/corporations/investment firms.

shlant··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
any prominent examples of it being "far right"?
shlant··on Plastic bag bans and fees reduce harmful bag litter on shorelines
lazy slippery slope and strawman argument is lazy. If you think banning plastic bags are significantly contributing to authoritarianism then your understanding of the term is probably skewed.
shlant··on I used AI-powered calorie counting apps, and they were even worse than expected
most people do not arrive at the idea that CICO (Calories In Calories Out) is useless or incorrect on their own - they usually buy into that belief because they follow specific diet communities or health influencers that are incentivized to tell them that.

shlant··on How to live on $432 a month in America
so people are just delivering free wood to anyone who chooses to move out to the boonies? Seems like a bad assumption to be making
shlant··on How to live on $432 a month in America
yea you either need to see people very rarely, see them often by spending a lot of time and money traveling, or see them often by spending multiple days away (which again, how are you paying for this? and what's the point of buying a house far away if you won't be there half the time?)
shlant··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
> The scale at which it happens is a question

and my point is that there is no reason to think this is enough of a problem that any well-adjusted person should factor it into the "should I use Airbnb?" calculation. If someone thinks that is an issue then I would assume they never use public bathrooms.

shlant··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
> especially with US-based rentals, and now I'm a skeptic at best.

I have been using AirBNB for years (top 5% guest at one point) with virtually no issues (that weren't quickly resolved by support) and I imagine my experiences are this way because I am almost never in the US. I would love to see a poll on how people rate AirBnB broken down by where they usually stay.

shlant··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
is this even a widespread problem? kind of reminds me of the tiktoks of "hotel safety tips"[1]. Makes me think these levels of paranoia are unique to the US

shlant··on WeightWatchers files bankruptcy
as someone who has always been a healthy (or even under) weight, but still struggled with keeping up an active lifestyle, this is the key - find some form of exercise that is actually enjoyable for you.

I have gone through multiple bouts of being able to do weightlifting for example for 6 months or so at a time. However, I always end up stopping (for longer than I could do it for) because it just isn't enjoyable. The monotony of doing the same lifts over and over again (even if the weight was increasing) just wasn't engaging enough to keep it as a part of my lifestyle.

I discovered rock climbing a year and a half ago and have been going every 2 or 3 days since (other than 2 weeks off one time due to injury). It's such an interesting sport that combines strength, agility, problem solving and collaboration. It's actually engaging which means I never have to be disciplined to continue doing it on days I don't feel up to it. The exercise isn't the point and yet my body is in better shape then it's ever been.

I think more people need to find that something.

shlant··on A Texan who built an empire of ecstasy
wow what a powerful story - thanks so much for sharing. I'm glad you have been able to turn something horrible into a motivator for yourself. May your story do the same for others so they don't have to rely on dealing with such heartbreaking circumstances. RIP to your uncle.
shlant··on A Texan who built an empire of ecstasy
you sound like a bot trained on 80's anti-drug messaging.
shlant··on A Texan who built an empire of ecstasy
it is concerning how many people do not understand the VAST difference in quality of life and physical/mental ability over the age of 50 between someone who takes decent care of themselves and someone who doesn't. So many times I've heard people, in the face of making healthier choices, respond with "why would I want to live longer anyways, I'm going to be old and decrepit!". Very sad perspective.
shlant··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
your slippery slope argument is not very convincing. What do you suggest be done (that isn't already) about people who regularly speed, putting themselves and those around them in danger?
shlant··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
yea there are some wild hypotheticals being thrown around in the comments with one of my favorites being "what if you're drinking and you have to speed to escape a wildfire but have a breathalyzer in your car?". Jeeze I guess we really should just do nothing instead.
shlant··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
> Taking someone's license away for getting caught doing 5 over a few too many times on the freeway where literally everyone is always doing 5 over and you are more of a danger by not going the speed of traffic doesn't in any way serve the public interest as far as I can tell. It's a death sentence for a victimless crime.

What percentage of people who would be effected by this do you think match this description?

shlant··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
> monitoring everyone all the time and eliminating the ability to move from Point A to Point B privately is totally fine and no problem whatsoever.

Is that what the bill proposes? everyone's vehicle is now monitored all the time?

shlant··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
lol I had shared the original article to a group with the comment "rare republican policy win" and then had to immediately retract that after reading your comment
shlant··on TLS certificate lifetimes will officially reduce to 47 days
this is exactly what I do because mongo and TLS is enough of a headache. I am not dealing with rotating certificates regularly on top of that for endpoints not exposed to the internet.
shlant··on Sleep is essential – researchers are trying to work out why
> with no deleterious health effects

Is that actually the case? do we have long term data on these people? or are we just going off of "I feel fine on 5 hours of sleep" stories? Or are you only referring to day to day health effects?

shlant··on Major endometriosis study reveals impact of gluten, coffee, dairy and alcohol
You see more reasons for low alcohol because we are finally waking up to the fact (and the science is confirming) that it's a poison ... at essentially any dose.

You see more reasons for low carb/keto because it's the current diet trend.

shlant··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
> I would think it unlikely they can secure an updraft from this to keep the house. What's the plan for that?

They tried to steal an election already - it's pretty easy to understand why they are making decisions as if they don't have to worry about elections anymore

shlant··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU

shlant··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
the original refutation was "fluoride in the drinking water concentrations is proven safe and it doesn't affect brains". Your study does not show that IQ is effected at concentrations that are being added to water supplies. Just because X can result from Y levels of some substance does't mean X results from Y-n concentrations.
