shlant··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
> AirPods became popular because they were fashionable and now they’re unfashionable.

You don't think a significant number of people use Airpods because they are good value and convenient? I know that's why I got them. The noise cancelling alone is worth it

shlant··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
you think humans don't like being alone because they are conditioned to feel that way? And you can just be ok with being alone when you realize this?
shlant··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
free as in beer is clearly what they mean. They are a non-profit talking about pricing.
shlant··on A macOS app that blurs your screen when you slouch
> I don't really think LLMs have done that much to change the actual situation around ability/outcomes

from my own experiences and many others I have seen on this site and elsewhere, I'm not sure how anyone could conclude this.

> it doesn't seem to me like it's actually leveling up mediocre programmers to "very good" ones

Oh well then if this is your metric then maybe your take is correct, but not relevant? From the top level comment I thought we were talking about the bar being lowered for building something thanks to AI and you don't need to become any better at being a programmer to do so.

shlant··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
a touchpad malfunction that only happens after an OSX update?
shlant··on ChatGPT Health
"besides obvious things like being discriminated against for insurance"
shlant··on ChatGPT Health
you think ChatGPT was purposefully and maliciously prompted to tell someone they had ADHD?

and your reasoning for this is what?

shlant··on Eat Real Food
> I think cows get to much blame

I think that incredibly biased channel and extensively criticized video gets too much credit

shlant··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
> People forgot or simply don't realize how much better life was just 3-4 decades ago

Are you just saying this thinking no one will ask you to back it up with data? Care to quantify what "so much better" actually means?

shlant··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
yea that's not normal for LSD at all. NBOMe?
shlant··on The suck is why we're here
I know "try this other tool" is probably an eye-roll-worthy response, but as someone who's not a programmer but is in IT and has to write some scripts every once in a while and has a lot of AI-heavy dev friends - all I've ever heard about Copilot is that it's one of the worst.

I recently used Claude for a personal project and it was a fairly smooth process. Everyone I know who does a lot of programming with AI uses Claude mostly.

shlant··on The battle to stop clever people betting
> Isn’t the point to let all players have a fairly equal chance?

Do you genuinely think this is why clever players are banned?

> Someone’s going to win the money regardless, so it’s not like you’re saving money.

What? banning people who have a better edge vs. the house won't save money?

shlant··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
yea people in this thread saying 8-12 for psilocybin and 12 is short for LSD tells me these are either heroic doses or hyperbolizing.
shlant··on Indoor tanning makes youthful skin much older on a genetic level
salt was always advised to be limited, especially for those with high blood pressure. This hasn't changed, there are just vocal diet ideologues (mostly carnivore/keto) that are trying to post-hoc rationalize otherwise.
shlant··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
> Your peers are now way more aware of child abuse, kidnappings, murders, than your parents were

does being more aware of these things mean you necessarily make better decisions overall for you children? Are humans good at translating news they see into accurate risk assessments?

shlant··on JetBlue flight averts mid-air collision with US Air Force jet
> We should just start shooting down anything big enough to need a transponder that is not using one. Doesn't matter who's in it, doesn't matter what it's for.

indistinguishable from what someone in the current administration would come up with

shlant··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
can't tell if this is sarcasm
shlant··on Apple loses UK App Store monopoly case, penalty might near $2B
"the free market is the solution!" you say while defending monopolistic practices
shlant··on Meow.camera
> As factory farms already feed those herds, clearly there's enough grain to feed them.

1. Feed Conversion Ratio is worse for pasture-raised vs. factory farmed so that's not a given - animals being able to move more, waste more calories that aren't being converted to meat

2. You still haven't provided a source for your claim about land usage

shlant··on Meow.camera
> Then be angry at factory farming, not eating meat.

When one of the most common responses to pointing out how awful factory farming is "well you can just buy from farms" when the reality is that 99% of consumption comes from factory farms, it's completely reasonable to associate the two

> We can easily feed people as we do now, not have factory farming, but still not have the tens of thousands of acres of grassland to feed a herd for 100% grass grazing.

Going to need a source for that because all the information i've seen shows that there is absolutely not enough land to be able to sustain the current levels of meat consumption.

shlant··on Electricity can heal wounds three times as fast (2023)
I hope more and more people start to see "capitalism bad" as a lazy scapegoat for any modern problem
shlant··on Quantification of fibrinaloid clots in plasma from pediatric Long COVID patients
I don't know why they decided to use the term "blood letting" but I'm pretty sure some of the benefits being talked about in the response also come from donating blood (which is essentially the same thing)? You calling it "leaching" doesn't seem good faith
shlant··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
do you think these are comparable? are you equating lobbying to the infiltration of government systems or coordinated efforts by Russian assets inside a campaign team to influence elections?
shlant··on Why your outdoorsy friend suddenly has a gummy bear power bank
yea considering they made 6 bullet points all just to say "rated and tested capacities are usually different" reeked of pedantry (although not surprising as we are on a tech site) and IMO did not warrant the label of "very poorly researched article"
shlant··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
none of this information was available when these comments were made. Essentially the entirety of the right-wing media apparatus had already made up their minds before any evidence was available
shlant··on Lab-grown salmon hits the menu
you care more about morally loaded terms than research and call me illogical. ok
shlant··on Lab-grown salmon hits the menu
ant-seed oil is anti-scientific and prays on people being ignorant about the research on health outcomes and relies on emotional appeals and appeals to nature such as "the genetic engineering and solvent-based extraction of canola oil".
shlant··on Lab-grown salmon hits the menu
> But when an omni dieter looks unhealthy we just say “that guy looks rough” and when we see a vegan who looks unhealthy we say “vegan diets make you look rough”.

many such cases. People have no idea about how much their bias influences their perception of the world and then share the output of that worldview as if it is relevant to reality

shlant··on Lab-grown salmon hits the menu
> But I have yet to see a healthy looking vegan person.

This anecdata is so wrong and only serves to degrade the conversation. I can only imagine you have some sort of bias that convinced you this was worth sharing.

There are a wide range of people who are vegan with various aesthetics, just as with any diet. There is also a selection bias as veganism can attract people who have health issues that they are treating with diet. Your judgement of the efficacy and impact of a lifestyle being based on some people you've met tells me your way of thinking about the world is deeply flawed and shallow.
