shireboy··on Doorbell camera catches rare footage of meteorite striking home's front walkway
You are technically correct. Which is the best kind of correct.
shireboy··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
I have same problem and landed on using simplelists.com for email groups. Users don’t have to install anything or get yet another account.

Still, I would like to find something that does text, email, and basic group features like calendar and photos

shireboy··on Using coding skills to make passive income
This is what I want to do ultimately, but I'm at a sort of crossroads. I have a good job, a consulting side gig, a good family, and 0 hours for my own ambitions. Several years ago I made about 20k on a solo project, so I know I'm capable. I just need to be able to focus on my dream instead of someone else's. Lately I've landed on 'it will happen when it needs to', but I also worry that I'm plateaued and will wish I'd risked it earlier.
shireboy··on Lines of code that will beat A/B testing every time (2012)
Are there any component libraries that just do this for you? Like an angular or Blazor component you put your variations in and it handles storing results and handling the logic.
shireboy··on I got OpenTelemetry to work. But why was it so complicated?
I'm literally porting some code to Otel now and here is what I landed on, even before this article: It is confusing because it's a topic that uses vague terminology that means different things in different domains. For example, I'm looking at one OTel ui and "Traces" are the individual http requests to a service. In another UI, against the same data, "Traces" are the log messages from code in the service, and "Requests" are the individual http requests. To wire up in code, there's yet other terminology.

I haven't decided exactly what to blame for this. In some ways, it's necessary to have vague, inconsistent terminology to cover various use cases. And, to be fair some of the UIs predate OTel.

shireboy··on Systems Ideas That Sound Good but Almost Never Work – "Let's Just "
A little bit of a tangent, but my kids often ask this sort of "why don't we just..." question. As some examples, why don't we just:

...send landfills to the sun to burn up ...use a wind turbine on a car to generate electricity ...ride horses instead of cars ...give everybody free houses/clothes/money

I always try to explain the science while not discouraging creative thought. It's hard, because I want to be sure they grasp the cold, hard truths of physics and economics, but I don't want to pigeonhole them into thinking "there will never be any solution to this problem". I've often thought a well-written "why don't we just" book or website would be engaging for kids and adults.

shireboy··on Are there more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way? (2016)
Starting with 3 trillion trees, the reduction needed to reach 400 billion trees is 3,000,000,000,000−400,000,000,000=2,600,000,000,000 trees. Given that 15 billion trees are lost each year, the number of years required is 15,000,000,000 / 2,600,000,000,000 =173.33 years. Therefore, it would take approximately 173 years to reduce the number of trees to 400 billion if no new trees are added and 15 billion are lost annually.

Of course trees are added, and it’s not clear if the 15 billion number is net loss. Assuming not, the number of years could stretch to infinity.

shireboy··on Timemap.org – Interactive Map of History
Really amazing site. I could spend hours on it. Only real suggestion: I’d like to see more stuff. Layers for notable events in different categories besides just battles. It would need some curation but user- submitted content. Or maybe use ai to find various time/place on Wikipedia and decide if it is “notable”.

Ux is great but I got in a state in maps where I couldn’t get back the control at the top that lets you pick people/battles without refreshing the page.

shireboy··on Don't Get Distracted (2017)
I remember an anecdote about this topic where someone (I think it was Douglas Engelbart?) was giving another a hard time about their military software being used to kill people. At which point the other person mentioned their software used a mouse (which Engelbart invented). Obviously a complex topic with lots of considerations that I venture won't be solved in this HN thread, but good to discuss and think about.
shireboy··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
Funny, I think it's a perfect summary, but in a positive sense. Some of the tools you can modify the prompt, or include a .md file in context to help direct it. But even without that, I don't find it a waste of time because I have lower expectations. "This just saved me 15 minutes of typing out html+css for this form, so I don't mind taking 2 minutes to review and tweak a few things."
shireboy··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
I think this is a pretty clear-eyed view. I've been a developer for 25 years. I use Copilot every day now exactly the way he describes. I get it to do XYZ, then use it to refactor what it just did or clean it up myself. Every now and then it goes sideways, but on the whole it saves me time and helps me focus on business problems more than ceremony.
shireboy··on Show HN: ColoringsAI – Custom Coloring Pages from Ideas (My Daughter's Idea)
I agree, no-signup is really nice, esp. since I'm hesitant to have my kids signup for things, and of course free is nice. That said, if you do want or need to monetize, one idea would be to slap a donation link like 'Buy me a beer' on it. I could see some people being willing to send a few bucks to your daughters' college fund in exchange for infinite coloring pages for their kids. Also, it probably makes sense to cache if you're not already - once someone generates "Paw Patrol vs Scooby Doo", put it in CDN and serve up from there instead of generating again.
shireboy··on Show HN: ColoringsAI – Custom Coloring Pages from Ideas (My Daughter's Idea)
What a brilliant idea!
shireboy··on Math4devs.com: List of mathematical symbols with their JavaScript equivalent
It’s ok for what it is. I learned some and enjoyed, but eventually cancelled for various reasons. Math Academy is good if you want a serious course (they are accredited and offer a transcript). Khan academy is good if you just want some online courses.
shireboy··on Math4devs.com: List of mathematical symbols with their JavaScript equivalent
My son is using Math Academy and it's been excellent. A really good system if anyone is looking for online math course.
shireboy··on Math4devs.com: List of mathematical symbols with their JavaScript equivalent
This is pretty cool. As a self-taught developer with a non-CS major, my math limited out at college algebra 2. I recently did Brilliant.org calculus just to try to make better sense of various CS papers, and I thought at the time I could probably understand some of the concepts in code better than standard mathematics notation. Something like this definitely helps me understand the math symbols better. I could see taking it to the next level and adding other languages and symbols.
shireboy··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
Really nice project. One idea for “if we fail to take down a message that no longer applies, it confuses her.” Put a start and end date/time on messages and implement in the board. That way you can pre schedule them and have them fall off automatically.
shireboy··on NASA remains silent on why crew went to hospital after dragon splashdown
Also, climate conditions on Mars are worse than on Earth. I hear it’s so bad you can’t even go outside!
shireboy··on Using the Strangler Fig with Mobile Apps
Well, in this case I'd be fine with client-side Blazor (WASM mode), as there is a mature REST API and it is an internal app where SEO etc is not important. But yes, routing is one hassle as well as the complexity for developers etc. We had this issue some when we did the api: ie say an issue was reported - developers would first have to figure out "is this a problem in apiv1 or apiv2, or in the way apiv2 proxies to apiv1?" Absolutely needs to be buy in that we're going to commit to finishing the migration in a reasonable time.

I still like that we did strangler pattern for the API vs the "rip the bandaid off" pattern, but it does carry some baggage that can be glossed over in some articles about it.

shireboy··on Using the Strangler Fig with Mobile Apps
Yeah, I looked into lit as a possible way to do this, but was left feeling like then I had 3 things to juggle - lit, angular, and blazor. Should possibly revisit, though.
shireboy··on Using the Strangler Fig with Mobile Apps
I’ve done strangler pattern for a large api and it worked well. I would like to use it for migrating a large Angular spa UI to Blazor. But that seems more daunting. Even if I did find a way to bridge and host Angular code inside the Blazor app, it just seems like it would be pretty complex. Has anyone done similar?
shireboy··on Ion engines could take us to the solar gravitational lens in less than 13 years
Take us -to- it, or take us past it? It’s one thing to go zooming past a point and another thing to get halfway there then turn around and slow down and park there. A telescope would almost certainly want to park there.
shireboy··on Α phase-locked auditory stimulation to treat symptoms of sleep onset insomnia
I need one of these asap please.
shireboy··on Radio Shack Catalog Archive (1939-2011)
This is so cool. I just sent to my kids as they always ask what computers/phones/music/etc. was like "when I was a kid".
shireboy··on FFT-based ocean-wave rendering, implemented in Godot
Nice, but may need to adjust the limits: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41631177
shireboy··on Ask HN: What do you use to backup your VMs?
Answer to this will totally depend on the scenario. Figure out what your RPO and RTO is on each thing and build out backups and failovers accordingly. If this is anything but a personal lab, you will likely need both db level backups (ie get this db back to this time) and vm level (the datacenter went down, good thing we have all our vms backed up offsite). Veeam comes to mind and one tool I’ve seen work well. Backup services built into cloud providers is what I use for most things these days
shireboy··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
Visual studio plays a >donk< on test or build failure and a ding on success. I have a habit of switching away to another project or hacker news while tests run, so this is extremely useful for me.
shireboy··on Show HN: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Online
My introduction to H2G2 was the Amiga text based game. I got stuck on heart of gold and to this day don’t know what I was missing. Now I’m going to have to give it a go again: https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/play-the-hitchhikers-guide-...
shireboy··on Sisk – Lightweight .NET Web Framework
If I understand the problem, just move all your DI registrations to a shared extension method:

  public static ConfigurationExtensions{
      public static AddMyApp(this IServiceCollection services){
           services.AddScoped<IFooService,FooService>();
      }
  }

  //In console app:
  var consoleBuilder = Host.CreateApplicationBuilder(args);
  consoleBuilder.Services.AddMyApp();
  ...
  //pseudocode - in real world you'd put this in another class or method called by the commandline code:
  if(webHostCommandLineSwitch){
      var webBuilder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);
      webBuilder.Services.AddMyApp();
     ...
  }
shireboy··on I'm tired of fixing customers' AI generated code
I can empathize, but am also wondering if some of these are feature requests in disguise. For “how to call api” docs, sample code, and even client libraries can be generated from your OpenAPI specs. Link to the docs in every reply. The more complex asks could be translated “build this endpoint and charge me for it”. If all else fails, set up partnership with devs who want to fix/build customers crap and figure out some copy to direct the more complex asks to them.
