shipscode··on Dysregulation of hypothalamic gene expression by soybean oil in mice (2020)
Meat avoidance & mental health studies would like to have a word with him
shipscode··on Dysregulation of hypothalamic gene expression by soybean oil in mice (2020)
Study after study proves that Soy is terrible for humans. I’m lucky I’ve been avoiding it since the soy protein gives you 60% of the gainz of whey protein studies way back.

Believing that someone is better off drinking and eating a concoction of seed oils vs. animal derived fats or milk has become a form of religious doctrine. I’m happy to see others finally coming around to the scam.

shipscode··on Ask HN: Why does Apple refuse to add window snapping to macOS?
Just use Yabai
shipscode··on Metformin shown to prevent long Covid
At least you're alive, I've watched family members of loved ones die. Vaccine -> Full Body Rash -> Organ Failure within 2 months of the booster.

Between that and the "totally not caused by the vaccine" friends who had blood clots, gallbladder and appendix removals, etc... all in their late 20s.

All I'll say is I'm happy I never got it.

shipscode··on Illinois prohibits weapons, facial recognition on police drones
The title confused me a bit, Illinois isn't prohibiting weapon recognition on drones, it's prohibiting putting weapons on drones.

Also, the act doesn't appear to have any legal consequences, so I wonder if it actually holds any teeth.

shipscode··on Reddit App – Suspicious high number of recent 5 star, one word reviews
This Reddit thing is starting to border insane conspiracy. This is a boring legacy tech company who’s best selling point is being a discussion forum for the chronically mid. The employees are probably checked out and hiding at home, I can’t imagine anybody has time to do all the random stuff they’re being accused of.
shipscode··on Generating Income from Open Source
Closed source that thing and charge for it or I will. All open source makers are leaving tons of bread on that table.

I see these donation numbers where they’re netting $200/mo for some wildly successful tool. Closed sourcing it + marketing and you’ll be at $2-$3k/mo in 6 months with moderate effort.

Open source is cool for a communal app with a lot of different vectors. Openpilot for example is smart for me. For everything else though? It’s an easy way for software to become unmaintained. Good luck finding someone to work for free in perpetuity.

shipscode··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
The window navigation experience is very fast, but when you weigh in overall reliability, I’d take Yabai on Mac any day.
shipscode··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
Similar setup for me, works pretty well!
shipscode··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
Use Yabai with SKHD. Configure if by telling ChatGPT to convert your i3 config to Yabai.
shipscode··on I criticized Amazon’s policies in a blog – their lawyers have subpoenaed me
What I take from this: Keep your head down & your mouth shut. It’s no face, no trace, no case out here.

Also siding with the state of California instead of Amazon would be signaling red alarms in my head. Nothing those states (NY, CA, WA, CO, etc) are involved in right now is morally legit.

shipscode··on Covid outbreak at CDC gathering infects 181 disease detectives
Kinda sucks that everybody stopped studying COVID once the Vaccinated super spreader events started popping off.
shipscode··on Ask HN: How does archive.is bypass paywalls?
What happens when you first load a paywalled article? 9 times out of 10 it shows the entire article before the JS that runs on the page pops up the paywall. Seems like it probably just takes a snapshot prior to JS paywall execution combined with the Google referrer trick or something along those lines.
shipscode··on How to quit cars
I like how this comment comes from someone who actually gave up a car but validates my own sentiment and research into people dragging me online. None of the anticar keyboard warriors seem to live in cities or even be 'about that life'. I did the opposite and kept a car in NYC for years, spending 3 hours a week street parking it. If I can do that, surely they can put the effort in to do the opposite if they're so passionate.
shipscode··on How to quit cars
The anti car evangelism has been going on for 6+ years if you've lived in an urban area. Your point about the non-affected advocating for public transit is 100% true though. I've been dragged for pro car statements before, and the people dragging me are NEVER actually New Yorkers or Manhattanites, they're always either Brooklyn Transplants or people who are spread randomly across the US.

New Yorkers know that working class people have to commute into Manhattan and often save hours driving instead of taking the train. The pro bike keyboard warriors should go to Manhattan during the work day and ask a worker at any downtown Manhattan restaurant how they get there.

shipscode··on How to quit cars
Agree with you 100%, the next few years are going to be wild WRT people moving out of metro areas. The housing costs in NYC for example haven't returned to 2016 levels and likely won't in the near future.
shipscode··on Where have all the hackers gone?
I like this take. Good luck being a “hacker” when the webpack config takes 2 days for a pro and a week for a novice. The programming landscape is far more complex.
shipscode··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
With the flexibility of remote work it's hard to feel like anybody but chumps still work in person, let alone uproot their whole lives for an opportunity that can be swiped at a moment's notice.

The only reason I would personally relocate would be greater freedom, and relocating for a job is antithetical to that notion.

shipscode··on U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs
Maybe running people out of their jobs for not getting an experimental drug that is no longer recommended in most working age Americans was bad public policy?
shipscode··on U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs
Depression isn't taboo or stigmatized anymore? There's plenty of government forms you'll have to check a box and explain if you've been depressed still. Maybe it's more of a lack of awareness of the taboo and stigmatization.
shipscode··on YouTuber who staged plane crash faces up to 20 years jail
Unfortunately in today’s day and age any mental illness is a scarlet letter on your record when it comes to anything government related. Firearm licenses in antigun states are probably the most egregious.

It’s especially troubling with the hype surrounding “mental illness” or “neurodiversity” and popularization of it amongst the youth. It seems to be creating a nation of prohibited persons and second class citizens.

shipscode··on Casio adds fitness features to original G-Shock digital watch
This is going to have a huge response with Casio connoisseurs. They took the original design and added heart rate tracking which is MVP what those people want from their watch. Great play.
shipscode··on Vim Keybindings Everywhere – The Ultimate List
That's where I ended up at. Messed with it for a couple hours then realized it had the same shortcomings of my nvim setup so improved that instead :)
shipscode··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
I doubt that the world was actively preventing consumer vehicles from driving on existing infrastructure. It seems like the same people who are forcing the change over to electric vehicles are also actively working to reduce the presence of vehicles on the roads.. I don’t believe they are operating in good faith.
shipscode··on Vim Keybindings Everywhere – The Ultimate List
The VSCode vim plugin gets way too much credit in my opinion. All the core tasks navigating tabs, creating new tabs, dealing with file managers, aren't handled in that plugin nor the nvim plugin. I've actually built my own "vim-esque" hotkeys into VSCode for the core tasks that don't pertain to editing individual files. Maybe I'll drop it someday...
shipscode··on White House announces new actions to promote responsible AI innovation
Nothing like neutering a new technology to give the dinosaurs in congress something to do.
shipscode··on New Yorkers want to stop landlords from using facial recognition
You’d have to be a maniac to want to become a landlord in NY these days.
shipscode··on Is It Time to Quit Coffee for Good?
Yes, but replace it with Yerba Mate.
shipscode··on Ask HN: What's with the culture of suppression of dissenting views?
It's not in your head, people who wield downvote power on HN are ultra mid & downvote anything outside of the "current thing" or "prominent worldview".

Like all online communities, HN suffers from the "most active people online do nothing IRL" factor, and the downvotes show.

shipscode··on LSD: Not Even Once
People online are basically parrots, they're just repeating what they've read regardless of who stated it.
