shipp02··on Anthropic: "Applicants should not use AI assistants"
What if you use it to get unstuck from a problem? Then come back and learn more about what you got stuck on.

That seems like responsible use.

shipp02··on How far can you get in 40 minutes from each subway station in NYC?
This is the case in Hong Kong as well. The subway company is also involved in the malls built on top of them.

There are malls and neighborhoods built entirely around the subway station

shipp02··on Every System is a Log: Avoiding coordination in distributed applications
Yes, but if order doesn't matter, the delete might appear before the create.

shipp02··on Life lessons from the first half-century of my career
Some great stuff here's my thoughts on 3 of the 16 points

>Choose happiness

This one stuck out to me because recently I've been struggling with some stuff but making sure I had some routines that made me happy (having food at consistent times, a little morning routine with a walk/yoga) has made me more composed and lets me go after things.

>It’s not how many projects you start; it’s how many you finish.

Juggling a few too many open projects right now. Some of them that would be quite cool to show off are just stuck because I don't find the time and they aren't in a presentable state yet.

>Look for the positive opportunities

Surprisingly enough this is about how he got together with his wife even though it's in the career-focused segment. The story is sweet though and repeats the oft-repeated advice of making up after arguments.

shipp02··on Tilde, My LLVM Alternative
Given how long it takes for compilers to mature, by the time it's ready I didn't think anyone will care about x86. Similarly for c++11 vs 17. No?
shipp02··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Additionally, the British couldn't hope to hold onto India without the support of the British Indian army which at that point seemed ready to revolt.

The US's antiviral anti colonial stance also helped.

shipp02··on ChatGPT Pro
This is a really interesting take. I don't think individuals pay for these subscriptions though, it's usually an organizational license.

They also come with extensive support, documentation and people have vast experience using them. They are also integrated into all other tools if the field very well. This makes them very entrenched. I am not sure OpenAI has any of those things. I also don't know what those things would entail for LLMs.

Maybe they need to add modes that are good for certain tasks or integrate with tools that their users most commonly use like email, document processors.

shipp02··on Canon ships its first nanoprint lithography machine, rivals ASML
It would be sad to see the competition die just because it's a little late, especially in such an important and cornerstone piece of technology today.

shipp02··on Indian entrepreneur, industrialist, and philanthropist, Ratan Tata, dead at 86
JRD Tata and Ratan Tata are among the most honorable men with pure hearts, never affected by avarice or hatred. Tales of their generosity and kind hearted nature will continue to inspire me.

They are shining examples of how capitalists can help uplift society.

RIP

shipp02··on Kamal Proxy – A minimal HTTP proxy for zero-downtime deployments
So if you add any constraints/data, you can't rely on them being there until version n+2 or you need to have 2 paths 1 for the old date, 1 for new?
shipp02··on We spent $20 to achieve RCE and accidentally became the admins of .mobi
I love the overall sense of we didn't want to this but things just keep escalating and they keep getting more than they bargained for at each step.

If only the naysayers had listened and fixed their parsing, the post authors might've been spared.

shipp02··on Faster CRDTs (2021)
Could you also make it fully decentralized but require clients to come online within a deadline (1 day, week) or risk losing their local changes? This would also allowing trimming history but with loss of some functionality to sync.
shipp02··on PyScript: An open source platform for Python in the browser
Does it work on firefox for anyone? The spinner keeps spinning on my MacBook Air.

shipp02··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Isn't this the exact thing that got MS in trouble with anti-trust for Explorer? How is apple getting away with it?
shipp02··on Rustc_codegen_GCC can now bootstrap rustc
Sorry, what are you talking about. I have built ponylang, build llvm with a couple of patches from source on my 2018 Mac book air. Just don't put -j64. The first build will take a couple of hours but that is par for the course for a project of llvm's size and complexity.

The subsequent buttons take a couple minutes.

shipp02··on Java 17 / JDK 17: General Availability
What do you think of vertx. It seems pretty lightweight set of server side libraries along with activej which also focuses on speed.
shipp02··on Writing a simple JSON library from scratch: a tour through modern C++
The standards committee have too broad of a scope and think they can make everyone happy. They want the same C++ to work on embedded and cloud servers while not making anyone update any of their old code and having full backwards compatiblility. This results in tradeoffs that make everyone unhappy.
shipp02··on How Actors Work Internally in Swift
While there is no exact match between them, the ``Send`` trait which can be thought of as preventing you from sharing an object between two threads actually has two monadic implementation in haskell. The ``IORef`` and ``STRef`` monads serve exactly the same purpose. This utilizes the Rank2Types extenstion. I invite you to read the Lazy Functional State Threads paper[1] by Simon Peyton Jones published in 1994.

The purpose of the ST Monad is to prevent you form sharing the object inside it wrapped by an STRef with another thread of execution.

IORef utilizes the uniqueness of the ``IO`` monad and its properties guaranteed by the haskell runtime i.e. only one thread can use it at any given time to prevent more than one thread from having a reference to the object inside the IORef from multiple.

To experience it on a smaller scale, get a family member (non tech savvy) who uses windows/macOS to use linux for a few days. Everything that is not the same as it was on windows/macOS will be your fault even if the linux way is better/faster/cleaner than windows.
shipp02··on Ask HN: How to learn proper systems programming?
Just to check my own knowledge. Do you mean opening another socket for logs?

If not, what is a channel?

This. I tried to bootstrap an web flux application without spring boot or kofu or anything and you have to move thorugh so many different classes to get to the appropriate bean for the handlers that I just gave up. Also multiple simmilarly named classes like ``WebHandler``, ``HttpHandler``.

I don't have much other experience so I thought it was just me.

DI is also a pain and you never know where something is comming from unless you are familiar with what every single functions adds to the ``CONTEXT``.
