unfortunately not that unique. I wish it were...
shimsham··on Show HN: Each day is a gift
cuticle nail pushers are very useful, if not essential.
shimsham··on AIRCLOUD, hosting on a cluster of MacBook Airs
Awesome and inspirational. Who came up with such a crazy yet simple and essential product? Whatever next! Airmail? Airhadoop? Airdryer! Airstore. I'm going to buy me some 11" airs to experiment.

shimsham··on Could Coding Become the Next Mass Profession?
Saeed Dehnadi and Richard have done some interesting work on... A cognitive study of early learning of programming, available at Saeed's page:

shimsham··on Show HN: OSX port of the Light, Efficient Network Simulator (LENS)
Is it only me, or is there something faintly worrying about a comment regarding the logo (which, as pretty as it is, has absolutely nothing to do with the announcement). May I also apologise in advance if I've inadvertantly misunderstood the purpose of the announcement.
shimsham··on Make your Internet experience more productive, the hacker way.
The title promises much but the article lists well-known applications. I'm unsure where the increase in productivity comes from.
shimsham··on Go Forth And Conquer
I thought this was going to be an interesting post on an implementation of Forth written in Go with shared characteristics. How disappointing.
shimsham··on Pre-branded domain names for startups
lean startup ecosystem = not paying for things you don't need. plain language wins over every time. if a new business with little money needs a name and a logo for a fixed price, this can make economic sense. branding considers the audience and not the founders.
shimsham··on Pre-branded domain names for startups
unfortunately a logo and 2-syllable odd-sounding name don't make a brand. however, as a cost-effective way to get a name and image, it's relatively pragmatic, especially for those who need it NOW.
shimsham··on A replacement for email
IM2000 has some interesting ideas applicable to some of the issues raised here.
shimsham··on CERN press release regarding neutrino experiment
inches vs centimetres. damn those units.
shimsham··on Adobe Carousel - Cloud based photo storage and editing
Hmmm, Carousel was the pre-release name for Acrobat many years ago.
shimsham··on Using the VT220 Serial Console as a Terminal in OS X
Better tell IBM we don't have mainframes anymore.
shimsham··on Dropbox founders personally cashing in on $300M round
$10B for FancyFTP (as we call it in the office)? We find this as unsurprising as the activities of stock markets, banks, hyping writers and people. And Groupon. And companies. And politicians.

When's the right time to bring my degraded-buckyball communication unit to market?

shimsham··on Auto-BAHN App still sends Messages when Cellular and the Internet Fails
yay. I can now reactivate my uucp-style email addressing.
shimsham··on Apple's hold on metal chassis supply chain hinders competition
sounds like jealousy. innovate!
shimsham··on The importance of doing it wrong
;-) nice. this is how people learn to wear the careful gloves if they have to do things as root, or when sudoing.
shimsham··on The importance of doing it wrong
I think the analogy is tenuous but nevertheless valid. i saw where the article was going from the start. and of course, it's not about forcibly doing the wrong thing but the point at which u realise and what you then do. hopefully this is only done once.

when some friends, relatively new to unix, asked me various questions, I asked them what would happen if they did:

cd /; rm -fr /

I then suggested that, just to make sure they understood the consequences, they do this on basic Linux virtual machine so they could break the machine as much as they needed. illustrative, useful and they never felt they needed to do it again. bruises and cuts have their place :)

shimsham··on The importance of doing it wrong
yes, it's all about learning
