shimon_e··on Show HN: Help programmers from Syria get jobs elsewhere
Assad isn't rational anymore.
shimon_e··on Show HN: Help programmers from Syria get jobs elsewhere
Listen to it here: http://youtu.be/2pcssm6sLUk?t=2h15m10s

The suggestion was also mentioned by someone else too. Can't remember what the timestamp was.

shimon_e··on Show HN: Help programmers from Syria get jobs elsewhere
One solution mentioned in the house of commons during the debate was arming the rebels with chemical weapons as a deterrent against the Assad regime. I kid you not....
shimon_e··on This coupon code is a slap in the face
Obviously there is a segment of the population that coupon codes are going to help convert into customers and vice versa. Someone really smart would develop some AI for this.
shimon_e··on US has revoked Snowden's passport.
I don't think Cuba or Venezuela would care if he has a valid passport. He seems to have already got diplomatic treatment from the two countries. The US' mistake was waiting until the 21st to revoke his passport.
shimon_e··on US has revoked Snowden's passport.
I doubt the US government would punish him at the cost of mass protesting.
shimon_e··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Their real servers are quiet cheap and beefy.

Drooling @ http://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/eg_64g_ssd.xml

shimon_e··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Find this interesting? OVH is already upgrading routers to 100gbps and 500gbps versions.

shimon_e··on Shanghai Hacker News Meetup
Hmmm... if I get the time I may pop by.
shimon_e··on AOL acquires gdgt.com
So Ryan Block leads engadget after it is sold to AOL. Then starts gdgt and sells it to AOL.

What's next?

shimon_e··on World trembles in confusion and/or fear at Iran's fiberglass airplane
Iran and France had quiet close relations. Today English is a more common second language than French in Iran.
shimon_e··on World trembles in confusion and/or fear at Iran's fiberglass airplane
Sorry I don't even know how that posted. I was in the middle of writing my reply and looking up the news story on presstv.

The claim is an Israeli F16.

shimon_e··on Github SSL replaced by self-signed certificate in China
In China now. Ping to github is 280ms. The cert I receive is valid. So either they stepped up the game or it isn't universal.
shimon_e··on An Experiment: My Life With A Nexus 7 As My Phone
Any reason why voice can't be added through a custom rom?
shimon_e··on Google Bows Down To Chinese Government On Censorship
Google being non-existent in China is far greater censorship than the keywords the Chinese government wants to censor.

Having Google in China gives the Chinese a taste of the west. Which ultimately in our benefit. China has come a long way from the 100% communist era. If they are capable of change themselves we don't need to interfere IMO.

shimon_e··on Canonical announces Ubuntu for smartphones
Will Android apps be supported? Or must they be hacked? People want the best Google Maps not some second class html5 version.
shimon_e··on Pinterest Cut Costs from $54 to $20 Per Hour With Automatic Shutdowns
Scale and operation. European operators that open up in America also provide cheap pricing. See OVH for example. Pinterest could easily get 80 servers by them for $5/hr.
shimon_e··on How I got a $3,500 USD Facebook Bug Bounty
In that case they should have expedited a cheque in the mail. I thought they are offering money so we aren't tempted to sell it to malicious parties.
shimon_e··on How I got a $3,500 USD Facebook Bug Bounty
I did.
shimon_e··on How I got a $3,500 USD Facebook Bug Bounty
I submitted a report to facebook about privacy setting circumvention. Didn't receive a response. Didn't receive a bounty. Facebook DID fix the bug after some months.

Feel a bit cheated that a billion dollar company couldn't take the time to respond... if I had the time I'd follow up with them.

shimon_e··on Tim Cook confirms one line of Macs will be exclusively US-manufactured in 2013
The US doesn't need to export as much as it actually consumes unlike the Chinese.
shimon_e··on Apple will invest $100 million to bring Mac production back to the US next year
Manufacturing is coming back in the form of new jobs. The jobs that the Chinese are having are becoming extinct. Product labels use to be stuck by hand in China even in mass production. Long gone are those days!
shimon_e··on Thinking of Selling on eBay using Paypal? Think Again
It's like this in China also plus alipay holds the money in escrow.
shimon_e··on $15 Dedicated servers from OVH
OVH have a data centre in Canada now. You can email them to get the i3 Kimsufi server there.
shimon_e··on $15 Dedicated servers from OVH
The main reason I'm not so concerned is if they have physical access to the server they have root access anyway. At least this way I can see them logging in.
shimon_e··on $15 Dedicated servers from OVH
If I'm going to considerably pay more, I am still better paying OVH more. I'm thinking of getting this bad boy: http://www.ovh.ie/dedicated_servers/eg_64g_ssd.xml
shimon_e··on $15 Dedicated servers from OVH
Unlike OVH, server4you use nasty 5400rpm hard drives on their low end. I actually am waiting for someone to come out with a low end server with a small SSD drive. I need performance not storage.
shimon_e··on $15 Dedicated servers from OVH
I am interesting in 1) a provider with comparable features in Asia and 2) another with comparable price on the west coast of the United States. That is until OVH roll out their west coast data centre in the coming years.

BTW, I'm thinking of webnx's special deals as the best on the west coast. Competitive on the high end. No where near as cheap on the low end.
