shimon_e··on GoDaddy supports SOPA, redditor proposes "Move your Domain Day"

shimon_e··on HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
What is quiet likely is a Chinese internet business will adopt/fork webos to complete in the Chinese market against android. Which is held back by the Google vs China war.
shimon_e··on Apple can't call an iPad an iPad in China, says court.
I was making a point that Chinese courts generally don't award large lawsuits. The peasant sued for 4 rmb but the court felt that was too much. Here is the news article if you are interested: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/business/2010-02/04/content_942...

Here is another case dealing with trademarks where the Chinese courts awarded nickels on dimes.

Wow $1.6 billion. I remember a case in China few years ago when a peasant found a 3cm bug in a bottle of Sprite. He sued Coca-Cola for 4 rmb ($0.64). The court ruled in his favor but only awarded him 2.05 rmb.

I wonder if this is a change in heart in how much the Chinese courts will be awarding in future cases.

shimon_e··on Developers offered 80 percent cut of Windows Store app sales
Probably not going to last. When Google launched checkout it had better rates than paypal. After a few years it ended up matching paypal. When Amazon started selling music online it was 89 cents a song. Now it is on par with iTunes.
shimon_e··on The Future of Ground-Based Transportation Systems
If I can use China as an example, then in my experience, yes, the cost of the driver makes a huge difference. However, I am not entirely certain if the government is subsidising anything.
shimon_e··on Apple Inc vs a small Restaurant from Luxembourg
If your company can not created enough work for you. Then you create enough work for yourself. You need to justify your pay check to the company somehow.
shimon_e··on HP's new ARM-based Servers
How much cooling do these racks need?

It could be a killer sales point if these servers need no cooling.

shimon_e··on The China Startup Report
More than 1% of Americans are millionaires. Compared to less than 0.05 of Chinese.

I would also take into account that many internet users in China are still using IE6. And, internet connections tend to be of low quality so it is more bearable for the user to download one busy page from two simpler pages.
shimon_e··on Samurai: New Payment Gateway from FeeFighters
Hahaha... I should really be shouting this out...

If you are doing big numbers... sign up for Paypal in the UK. 1.4% for UK transactions and 1.9% for other currencies/countries. You need to be doing a considerable amount per month but you are basically getting wholesale rates with Paypal processing for nothing extra. Google matches the lowest rate but foreign transactions are 2.4%.

Just be careful for Paypal's conversion fees. They are 2.5%. You can avoid them by adding foreign bank accounts.

Dealing with Paypal is not for everyone. That is why I don't use them anymore. Got a more suitable service with another provider but it is not a service that most people would be able to use.

shimon_e··on Linode announces new datacenter location, Japan
Using half depth motherboards a rack is able to support 90 servers. Some providers like OVH in Europe focus on only building such racks.

shimon_e··on Twitter's Storm (complex event processing system) is now open source
Saying it is used by twitter makes it a lot easier to sell to management.
shimon_e··on Linode announces new datacenter location, Japan
Based on those times I'd say he is in Russia or very close to an Australia-Japan peering exchange.
shimon_e··on Linode announces new datacenter location, Japan
Surprisingly, China does not have good enough links to Hong Kong yet.

From what I understand the government is mostly busy improving internal infrastructure and end-user speed.

Chinese generally use China equivalent sites for your major bandwidth usage. So, speeding this stuff up seems to be number 1 priority.

shimon_e··on Linode announces new datacenter location, Japan
It looks like their IP is residential. This ISP even has 1gbps lines commercially available in Tokyo from what I understand. I wouldn't be shocked if just put up a rack in up in the ISPs datacenter to make use of the cheapest bandwidth rates. They probably calculated most of their bandwidth in Japan will be in this network and they have good US peering.

Since, one rack today can be stuffed with 90 servers each up to 20x more powerful than what was around in 2005, I doubt they really require more than 1 well configured rack for a long time. When the time comes to add a second rack they always have the option to place it in another Japanese city, if they don't decide to goto another Asian country instead.

Considering the above, I doubt the savings were worth moving out of Tokyo.
