shimon_e··on HN's Daeken will expose security flaw in 4m hotel room keycard locks
The room I'm in has a Ving lock. I witnessed it being reprogrammed by hotel staff when I was having problems opening my door.

Ving may have security flaws but I'm assuming it will be a bit more expensive to exploit.

> I've had friends consider me crazy for complaining - way after the time, I hasten to add - that I'd had a small deodorant can taken off me in airport security, which I'd then had to purchase in the duty free shop.

No one believes your deodorant would take down a plane. It's just that no one wants to pay to back that belief up.

shimon_e··on HN's Daeken will expose security flaw in 4m hotel room keycard locks
Little hard to lock the door with door chains while you're not in the room.

Hotel occupancy is a lot lower on the weekend. I'm sure many people living in hotel rooms with more belonging than can fit in the safe will appreciated this information being released on a weekend.

shimon_e··on HN's Daeken will expose security flaw in 4m hotel room keycard locks
Do you kindly mind only leaking the information on Friday?

Thanks from all us who spend our weekdays living in hotels.

shimon_e··on Ubuntu is coming back to Dell Laptops
I spend much of the year in China and I find the laptops overpriced or underpowered for the price they are offered for.

Sure, comparing retail price in China to the west usually has China being lower. However, most savvy buyers in the west buy their laptops from deals or outlet and with endless coupons. I haven't found either Dell's or Lenovo's outlet in China yet. Do they exist in China?

shimon_e··on 2012 Submarine Cable Map
I don't know US geography that well but it isn't a universal rule. Africa (cheap labour + under developed), for example, has many coastal cities linked by sea not land.
shimon_e··on 2012 Submarine Cable Map
Sea is cheaper. Land links require roads for the trucks to drive on and much more labour than sea links.
shimon_e··on As crops rot, millions go hungry in India
How about for the last two lines: Me: "Because I may be able to create a market environment where you may be able to profit off this grain in the future. Plus you have nothing to loose." Them: "Sounds great."
shimon_e··on China blocks access to Bloomberg sites
Just notice that too. If I get some time next week I'll look into it.
shimon_e··on China blocks access to Bloomberg sites
I think they have cracked some parts of https. If you make a prior to a non blocked page in https and then go to a block page sometimes it works. If you make your first https connection to a block page it is blocked. Maybe this is due to the way https works. I haven't looked into it.

Google uses https and they still managed to monitor all the traffic and block keywords.

There is a good reason why it is stated change your passwords before you come to China and after you leave.

shimon_e··on China blocks access to Bloomberg sites
I can personally attest that bloomberg is inaccessible from China Telecom at least in my region.
shimon_e··on China blocks access to Bloomberg sites
The Great Firewall messes with more connections than just websites. They are definitely are doing something to SSH connections. Every time I ssh to my server it gets bombed with faulty requests. (This was discussed on hacker news before.) They actually seemed to have slowed down this practice recently.

The world is much more tolerant of China as they don't have a hidden agenda like Russia had. Their only agenda is the economic advancement of China and the stability of it's government.

shimon_e··on China blocks access to Bloomberg sites
I am in China right now. I just tried to Google Bloomberg and my connection was stopped.

I can not connect to bloomberg.com. I can not read this BBC article.

Reply here and I'll test whatever you want me to.

shimon_e··on How we spent Friday night coming back online before Instagram and others
I use a similar system. With OVH you can set installation templates that partition the OS, set ssh keys, and then run a script. Which for me is a puppet script that sets everything up and deploys the latest version of the site.

OVH have an android app so I can scale to a new server from the push of a button on my phone. :D

Plus they cost peanuts compared to amazon.

I has fall over in other data centres too but OVH makes me the happiest.

shimon_e··on Google launches Compute Engine
OVH also offer this feature but I use puppet so it is really a moot point for me.
shimon_e··on Google launches Compute Engine
OVH has proper API for provisioning hardware. They have many machines ready to go only waiting for automatic OS install.
shimon_e··on Google launches Compute Engine
I think people confuse cloud computing with giving money to cloud provider. You can give all your money to a cloud provider without having any benefits of cloud computing.

I find developing my app for cloud providers and learning their APIs, submitting bug reports when stuff doesn't work as expected, etc to be more work than opening an account with a data centre and renting hardware as needed. Each to their own.

shimon_e··on Nexus 7 review: The best $200 tablet you can buy
I am thinking of a small USB 3G dongle and tethering with my phone at other times. The perfect device for me would be a 5" Nexus Note.

I'm really glad it comes with GPS. If I do get it, it is because they decided to include the GPS chip. I travel a lot and having GPS on a larger screen can help when talking to taxi drivers.

shimon_e··on Leaked Nexus 7 specs and price
I see a lot of Chinese brand tablets in China. That and the Galaxy note are crazy as hell here.

In China? Completely legal. Basic English is worth an extra $200 per month at least.
shimon_e··on The Macroeconomics of Chinese kleptocracy
I live in China. You can search about the hukou and business registration systems online.
shimon_e··on The Macroeconomics of Chinese kleptocracy
The system is still the same. You still need government approval as a Chinese to live in another city. There are many free economic zones where you can almost do anything you want. But the underlining system is still the same.

I am in China right now. I lived in a ghost city just last year.

shimon_e··on The Macroeconomics of Chinese kleptocracy
A city for one million residents is very small for China. Most of the time such a place would only be called a village. I lived in another ghost city in China for a few months. Suddenly, over night the city filled up and everyone was told they must work in a certain industry. Previously there was some other small industry (e.g. a shipping company with a few trucks with using the street as a warehouse and local services like a laundry mat). They were all kicked out because they were not the designated industry. The laundry mat re-opened a few weeks later on another street.

People forget that China is a command economy. The government tells you where to live and what to do. If you want to live somewhere else or do something else you need to apply for permission from the government.

Cities like Ordos shouldn't make anyone blink. Once the government knows what it wants to do it will be filled overnight.

Somewhere in China, half a dozen factories have figured out how to copy this and are churning out at maximum capacity.

The real question is why didn't Teflon come up with this?

By legal rights I mean for your sex not to be classed as rape. I really don't know how to correctly explain this topic. Sorry. I didn't really study these topics in English.

Islam took over Persia and put an end to Mazdakian belief. This is a credit to Abrahamic religion. The society you were born in could have been very different had Mazdak's ideas won. The concept of family would not exist and the gene pool would have very few trees. The idea of monogamous relationships are a given in our society and this is built on the success of Abrahamic religion removing competing systems almost entirely out of the conscience of human thought.

In history one could find other competing systems and the Mazdakian is just one example.

One must remember the bible was written before it's ideas were successful. To re-interpret it's ideas are after it's success may lead one to the wrong conclusions about what it actually was trying to convey. It may appear to be a lot more sexist than what it actually meant.

shimon_e··on Mark Zuckerberg married
The usage of "his woman" would be routed from translation of Bible from Hebrew. In Hebrew, there is only one word for (Ish) man, and husband, or (Isha) woman, and wife.

English translations translated freely taking preference for poetic sound.

So as long as the bible is part of English speaking culture the usage of woman as wife will be common.

Something I find interesting about Persian culture. In Persian the word Zan means both wife and woman, but there is another more formal word Khanom. Which is always to be used when speaking or referring to someone older than you. I wouldn't be surprised if this is due to the etymology of the two word being from different languages.

shimon_e··on Mark Zuckerberg married
Yes it does. The term, in origin, is not a topic that discrimination applies too. It merely means that in our civilisation lawful sexual intercourse is viewed to be legal through an agreement in between the husband and wife, provided it meets our sexual morales (you can't marry many relatives). Thus, he owns the legal rights for his sexual intercourse to be considered lawful. Unlike in other civilisations, for example the Mazdakian, where women were property of the state in a communist regime. Allowing legal sexual relations on a temporary basis when state condition were met. Where a man could be having legal sexual intercourse with both a mother and daughter for a few weeks. Part of the motive was that it was seen unfair that regular citizens didn't have access to the king's harems to do as they desire. Obviously, this was extremely discriminatory against women and viewed them all as only sexual objects. This is one of the greatest achievements of Abrahamic religion that such doctrines are long ago abolished.

To stress that this was the type of ownership implied. Never has it been legal right for a husband to allow a third party to have sexual intercourse with his wife, at the third party's pleasure. Despite this being the simplistic understanding of the term "his wife" may imply this.

If you want to understand terms in it's simplistic understanding, then I think you better worry about terms like sunrise/sunset.
