shikaan··on A Friendly Introduction to Assembly for High-Level Programmers
You are correct.

The focus of the series is in on accessibility. Sometimes it comes at the expense of telling the whole story: I was even on the fence on introducing the .bss block, honestly.

The article mentions initialized variables, but maybe this warrants a footnote.

Thanks for the feedback and for reading through the article. I appreciate a lot :)

shikaan··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
A game engine for coders.

It comes with a set of tool for your IDE (currently only VSCode) where you can draw sprites, compose music, make SFX right next to your code.

It's still not in v1, it's also my first "serious" C++ project, and life got in the way lately -- I haven't made significant progress in the last month or so

shikaan··on Compilers are too smart
I know it's probably hyperbole, but why

> yes, I know, friends don’t let friends use STL, but that is a topic for another discussion

?

Are there known shortcomings with the standard library in C++?

shikaan··on Gio UI – Cross-platform GUI for Go
Thanks all (:
shikaan··on Gio UI – Cross-platform GUI for Go
Go newbie here. Can anybody elaborate on this piece of the docs?

""" You might be thinking that it would be more usual to have an ops.Add(ColorOp{Color: red}) method instead of using op.ColorOp{Color: red}.Add(ops). It’s like this so that the Add method doesn’t have to take an interface-typed argument, which would often require an allocation to call. This is a key aspect of Gio’s “zero allocation” design. """

Why would there be an allocation? Of what? How are we saving it?

Hey! That makes a ton of sense and feels pretty dumb to not have thought about Thanks!

You can store conversations somewhere else than /tmp using an argument, for example

shikaan··on Keydex – terminal-based password manager
Hi all, I have recently added unicode support in keydex and thought more people could find it useful
shikaan··on Show HN: Shedio – gamified music learning app
Hi all,

I started Shedio in the middle of COVID lockdown two years ago. As a full-time software engineer and a former full-time musician, I decided to make something helping me stay motivated practicing and that included a collection of tools I used in my daily routine.

I shared it with a couple of friends, but eventually stopped working on it and never got too serious about it.

Over the weekend a friend wrote me that he's still on it, so I decided to share it here; maybe it helps somebody else staying motivated

shikaan··on Show HN: Shmux – run all your scripts from one file
Hi! Thanks a lot for this comment (: The sentiment you share is exactly where I was coming from when I was working on it.

Huge thanks also for the suggestions, especially #2 seem to make a lot of sense. I thought about using #!, but having sensible defaults for shmuxfiles is very smart too.

I'll keep this thread posted if I get to work in it reasonably soon. Thanks again (:

shikaan··on Show HN: Shmux – run all your scripts from one file
Hey! Thanks for the feedback (: There's a "quick start" section with usage, which I hoped was addressing this. Is there anything specific you would like to see?
