sheraz··on Ask HN: Docker, Kubernetes, Openshift, etc – how do you deploy your products?
hear hear. I've taken the last couple of months to refactor all of my side projects to 12-factor apps for deployment on a nice Dokku instance. Absolutely effortless.

Next steps now is getting these projects deployed through a CI/CD. I evaluated a few, and it looks like I'm down to drone.io or jenkins.

This will bring some much needed sanity I need to keeping all these side / personal projects in order. I can go weeks or months without touching them, but then know EXACTLY how they will get tested and deployed.

sheraz··on Snap commits $2B over 5 years for Google Cloud infrastructure
LOL. So. Very. True.
sheraz··on Telecommunications company Avaya files for bankruptcy
A friend of mine closed his company in 2013 and had a full avaya system with 40 phones and latest software that he could not even give away. Eventually some kids from a local hackerspace came and hauled away the whole lot. They were after the headsets and lcds.
sheraz··on Monetize Your APIs in AWS Marketplace Using API Gateway
Exactly this. It is like all those data marketplaces from 2010. Infochimps most famously and azure shuttering their data marketplace recently.

This has the same feel.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Alternative to Flickr?
Smugmug comes to mind (smugmug.com), but I'm not sure about the licensing. I know that they are/were an alternative favorite for the pro-sumer photographer.

There is also http://www.photoshelter.com/

sheraz··on Ask HN: Bootstrapped US founders, who do you use for health insurance?
I actually know a guy that was amicably divorced for 10+ years but remained married on paper just so he could keep his healthcare benefits.

They have children so there was mutual interest in making sure all family members were cared for.

sheraz··on How to Destroy the Business Model of Breitbart and Fake News
Strawman-schrawman....

Your threshold for hate speech much be pretty low if you think "fat and unattractive" fits the definition.

sheraz··on How to Destroy the Business Model of Breitbart and Fake News
Calling someone fat and unattractive is NOT hate speech.

Besides, whatever happened to just ignoring it and getting on with one's life? It is this constant cry-bully public outcry and constant whinging that has propelled people like Milo into the daily news cycle.

sheraz··on How to Destroy the Business Model of Breitbart and Fake News
Here is another narrative:

Attack the business models of companies who produce content we find offensive, politically incorrect, or don't align with our world view -- yet are still protected under the first amendment.

The problem is that Mr Phillips mentioned in the article must lack a sense of humor and/or information literacy if he thought he was reading hate speech. He was reading an opinion / sarcasm piece from Milo, Breitbart's in-house provocateur.

It is such a tiresome narrative that the liberal media outlets continue to trot out their own versions of fake news when they attempt to label breitbart sexist, racist, homophobic, or antisemitic.

It is sites like the nytimes who, through their reporting, have completely defanged the labels of "racist" and "hate speech" to the point that they mean nothing.

Calling women fat and unattractive for their use of birth control is not hate speech. It might be in poor taste, but it is not hate speech. Mr Phillips, the professor quoted in the article, would do well to leave his ivory tower and actually talk to someone from another walk of life. Leave the coddled campus life, head to a bowling alley, and listen to the Thursday league banter. Maybe then, in the cloud of rough and jockular language Mr Phillips and his ilk will see a small piece of the substrate of Americans who tell dirty jokes. Who make fun of their spouses. Who call each other names (often politically incorrect) and do so as members of a tribe.

They read breitbart and Drudge Report because those sites offer an alternative narrative to what comes from regular mass media.

Just because it is a different point of view does not make it fake or hateful or undeserving of ad dollars.

How does this end? My guess is it won't matter in the end. Thankfully.

Breitbarts traffic shows no signs of slowing. That inventory vacated by the brands too weak to ignore these internet-crybullies will be snapped up by the brands who want to reach a conservative readership.

sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you get side project ideas?
You are not looking hard enough!

But maybe you should find an open source project you like and see how you can start contributing in a meaningful way (meaningful to you).

Baring that, THINK SMALL. Think about one tiny thing to make, and then code the hell out of it:

- documentation - build process - tests - cross platform-ness - packaged for distribution (deb, Rpm, pip, npm, whatever)

I say all of this because a side project is often so much more than just the thing you want to code. Most of us devs would like to share our work, and the things listed above help other devs see that this project is serious and warrants our time / effort.

sheraz··on Ask HN: How did you get over your fear of shipping?
Include a public URL in your build process from day one.

I use dokku for this and simply git push dokku master right after I got push origin master.

At any given time those who have the URL can see what I'm doing and ping back with feedback.

That, and Show HN her is great. Reddit has /r/startups which I also think is supportive and helpful.

sheraz··on 404 Gender not found
Yeah no. This whole gender thing is a parody of itself.

Government identification has gender/sex along with other bits of information as a means of verification--just as the tags we give our pets. Sparky was born dec 5, 2012 and is a male of the Labrador breed.

The vet finds this information helpful when diagnosing or treating a health issue.

Stop with these gender politics. You are a very vocal minority who has made mountains out of molehills, cry-bullied anyone who is not onboard with your worldview, and you see insult everywhere your views are not represented.

404 rationality not found.

sheraz··on Automated book-culling software drives librarians to create fake patrons
yeah so what. that is the privilege of having power, you can exchange it for other forms of power.

And again, credibility is at stake. If I curate a list of awesome cloud providers, and IBM pays me to exclude AWS, then I look like an idiot.

sheraz··on Automated book-culling software drives librarians to create fake patrons
sure. And good for them. The curator risks his own reputation by promoting sponsors with poor content, products, or services that are not relevant to the audience.

I don't mind advertising/marketing so long as it is relevant and timely.

sheraz··on Two incomes with long commute, or one income with a shorter commute?
My only experience is in the NYC area where the trains are notoriously over-crowded, in need of repair/replacing, and very hard to enjoy during busy hours. And trying to work on those trains is futile. So needless to say, I'm not a fan.

Some people have the constitution to make long commutes regularly. I am not not one of those people.

Best of luck to both of you.

sheraz··on Automated book-culling software drives librarians to create fake patrons
Good story. I completely agree that all of this auto-curation will bury the eclectic collections and poison discovery.

That is one big reason I started my side project, curabase.com[1], to simply enable anyone to curate their own list of bookmarks. (Not a new idea, but it is MY idea based on this singlular thought -- that human curation will always be better, and NO. I don't have data to back it up :-)

sheraz··on Two incomes with long commute, or one income with a shorter commute?
Do you mean commuting in a car or by public transportation?

Either way, the one resource I cannot get more of in life is time. The more I get on in life the more I protect this resource. And I vow to never give my time to long commutes.

That said, I think that 25 to 30 hours per week is plenty of time to run a side business or consult.

Obviously there are many other factors, but when it comes to my time, it is very near the top of my priorities.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Excluding WordPress, what is your favorite for blogs or small stores?
I always push Processwire for questions like this. It is very versatile and makes for a capable CMS / blog / whatever.

I'm planning on using processwire to build a webstore with either Foxycart or Snipcart.

Just as a starter I will be moving my personal blog over to it just so I can have one processwire app in production.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Password manager recommendation?
Can you share why?
sheraz··on Ask HN: Password manager recommendation?
LastPass, and I pay for it. Does the job, but the chrome plugin seems sluggish sometimes.

Happy customer.

sheraz··on Ask HN: What's your plan for 2017?
Automation of the little things. Shortcuts.

I've started using hammerspoon on the desktop to shortcut things like window resizing and arrangement has reduced cognitive load.

And on the command line im starting to alias a lot of common commands.

Docker for many things command line. No more losing time to library dependency hell.

Git precommit hooks to run code linters on my files.

Most importantly push myself to make the behavior change to remember this stuff.

sheraz··on Ask HN: How did you teach yourself a second language?
Live there. Immersion. Anything else is a distant 2nd and you will never "feel" the language.
sheraz··on Ask HN: Does haiving side projects to show really help you get a job?
Oh hell yes. And Be prepared to talk about them. It is way more interesting than talking about hypotheticals

sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you choose the programming language for a project?
Easy. Which programming language is best at running Django? Ah, python it is :-)

sheraz··on Intro to RAML 1.0
This. For the last month I've been working on a big enterprise Flash flex application that talks to a PHP backend.

It seems that flex mxml is a good idea, but once apple decided to kill flash, the developer community jumped ship. Thankfully adobe gave flex to apache, and a small community lives on.

The interesting opportunity seems to be that there remain quite a few good consulting opportunities for flex devs.

The employers are getting a little anxious about finding devs and many are willing to work with you no matter your time zone :)

sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you deal with interruptions in the workplace?
I think that assumption needs to be tested. For this particular company it would seem that there is a lot of duplicate and triplicate questions that get floated.

And let's not forget about developer on-boarding into enterprise products with lots of technical debt! New devs can benefit greatly from reading threads that rationalize what _seems_ like a bad decision but is reality works well for a number of non-technical reasons...
