sheraz··on Ask HN: Do you get paid in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies?
I work with a very talented developer who lives in Venezuela. I pay him in bitcoin because that is literally the cheapest and fastest way to get him paid.
sheraz··on Ask HN: Did anything actually happen due to Y2K?
I'm currently consulting on a workforce management SaaS. (Think of workforce management as a time clock where people can punch in and out).

It was interesting to learn that starting in 2015 some customers were having trouble generating payroll for their youngest employees (aged 16 years) at the time. In debugging the issue it was concluded that Y2k was the issue (sort of).

sheraz··on How to Host Your Own Private Git Repositories
Github, bitbucket, gitlab, et. al are more than a git server. They are code review, community management, issue tracking, and the literally hundreds of integrations for all parts of the software development lifecycle.

Anyone with more than a personal pet-project will understand the value created by these services the moment they have to stand up the supporting items that make SDLC possible.

sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you provision new developer environments?
docker and Makefiles as task runners. I have a git repo that is the skeleton for this idea: https://github.com/undernewmanagement/flight-deck

On mac we have homebrew to pull in all the desktop apps and cli tools. Then a simple bash script to automate all of it.

I've managed to "retrofit" this into a team of 20+ devs and product owners for a variety of services.

We are even piloting this with sales and support so that they can stay abreast of bleeding-edge development and provide valuable feedback.

sheraz··on Ask HN: What medical datasets do you need?
Spirometery data for people with or without respiratory diseases / conditions. For example, healthy males / female data from age 5 to 95.

Then those with Diseases or conditions.

sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you manage bookmarks?
Self plug but relevant. This is why I made curabase.com

It is a SaaS with a chrome plugin.

Also it is mvp with lots of rough edges, but it more than solves my use case. I spend time to improve it when I can, with an eye to monetize in the future.

You are welcome to try and send feedback. I do read and respond to it, and I even take feature requests like bookmark exports (under development).

sheraz··on UN experts denounce ‘myth’ that pesticides are necessary to feed the world
Denounce is very different from debunked. In fact it is expression opinion vs fact.
sheraz··on Boston public schools map switch aims to amend 500 years of distortion
Yeah completely agree. The article leads me to think the district made the change for political reasons rather than scientific ones.

If that is true, then that is indeed disappointing. Sure, the kids may gain more insights into cartography/geography, but I wonder if the lesson plan now includes a false narrative of the oppressive white man made his continents bigger because "racism."

sheraz··on Introducing Create React Native App
There is Appcelerator Titanium which has been in the javascript native mobile app game for 5+ years.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Are you interested in a ARM CI service?
Share the link! I'm building a list of all the commercial and open-source CI systems/SaaS/OpenSource projects out there.
sheraz··on Google Cloud Next '17 – Day 1 – Keynote
Hey Doug -- I see what you are doing, and I reject the premise. Your tone implies that @meddalpal and I have somehow made a sexist remark by referring to a presenter as "the first lady to come out."

She was the first lady to come out, and I would imagine that many watching did not know who she was. Had it been a guy I would have said "That first dude on stage was a train-wreck of a presenter."

There is sexism in the world, but it is not here.

sheraz··on Google Cloud Next '17 – Day 1 – Keynote
what does women's day have to do with that terrible presentation?
sheraz··on Google Cloud Next '17 – Day 1 – Keynote
exactly -- The first lady to come out seemed so lost and literally said something like "more clouds" and "more 9's on uptime" for 2017. Thats when I clicked off...
sheraz··on Static Site Post Scheduler: Using AWS Lambda and Serverless to Schedule Blog Posts
Wow. Talk about building a rocket ship just to cross the street.

Edit: My backyard is filled with old rocket ships, so I am an expert on this subject :-)

sheraz··on Ask HN: If you needed a crud app built, how would you build it?
Hasn't someone packaged this up into a nearly turnkey kind of application?
sheraz··on Cloud Hosting Showdown: DO vs. Linode vs. Vultr vs. OVH vs. Scaleway
I think this is a little unfair.

Anecdotally, I've had a good experience with them. I use them as a playground for ideas or learning things like docker/kubernetes.

I see no reason why a properly architected deployment would have trouble in their environment.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Would you like to be part of a “new DMOZ”?
Totally a self-plug here, but I think it is relevant. I started curabase.com [1] to enable users to curate their own related lists of links.

I use it daily along with a chrome plugin so that I see it everytime I open a new tab [2]

I would love to engage some DMOZ admins/users to see if this is something they would consider to use.

sheraz··on Ask HN: Freelancers,What are your biggest painpoints?
I'm very upfront about my availability. I also let people know weeks in advance when I will be available. And in between that time I stay visible at my favorite events/meetups and in social media (publishing little open source things), asking questions, etc.
sheraz··on Ask HN: Freelancers,What are your biggest painpoints?
Keeping the pipeline full for when projects end or go on hiatus.

The dumbest mistake I've made has been this.

That slack time in between paying gigs can really kill financial momentum. Also, If I'm idle for more than two weeks that wastes not only money but also mental bandwidth. I go from thinking about work to thinking about how to get work, and that is stressful.

Always be networking. Always take meetings even if you are fully booked. Stay visible.

sheraz··on NASA to Host News Conference on Discovery Beyond Our Solar System
downvoted for ruining the fun :-)
sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you deal with clients that don't pay on time
time to fire the client?

or move them to a pre-payment method, perhaps?

sheraz··on Ask HN: What're the worst-designed things you've ever used?
getting a travel card in stockholm subway/bus system. Absolute nightmare
sheraz··on My Interview at Uber
I don't need an Internet argument to learn that tipping is uncommon outside the US. Nor do I care.

Your opinion is always welcome even if I disagree with it.

Enjoy your stay :-)

sheraz··on My Interview at Uber
Give it a rest, man. Don't like how we roll in the US? Don't come. Don't want to tip? Then don't do it.

If you want to live in the US, then assimilate. Either do it or dont -- but please stop this pedantic "how-the-rest-of-the-world" works perspective.

sheraz··on [dead]
> Mark Zuckerberg — Facebook’s CEO — is probably the most powerful person alive today. He may even be the most powerful person ever.

Yeah. You lost me right there.

sheraz··on Music professor receives patent to help fight beetles ravaging Western forests
I read this as "Music professor receives patent to help fight Beatles ravaging Western music."
sheraz··on Ask HN: Ghost my company? (Updated)
I think this is great advice. Always look out for number 1 (hint: that's you).
sheraz··on What is your python editors?
Pycharm for larger projects and database stuff or just vim if I'm hacking a small one-off script
sheraz··on Ask HN: How do you deal with managing cocky programmers?
Depending on their age I show them the door as I have little patience for disruptive or disrespectful cockiness.

or, sometimes in the case of cocky interns, I let give them enough rope to hang themselves. Cockiness at a younger age is just unrefined ambition.

But an arrogant 30 year old that's been in the game for 5 years? Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
