shell0x··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
Not just America, the whole West is in decline IMHO.Hong Kong is also done after the China security law.

I’m planning to move back to Asia, where I lived for like a decade. The work culture is harder but it feels much safer, better food, more fun, harsh on crime.

I wouldn’t mind to trade in German and Australian citizenships for Singapore.

shell0x··on I don't want your PRs anymore
My coworkers just let Claude review the PR now instead of reading the code. It seems the entire contract is broken now.

Submitters use LLMs to generate the code and reviewers use LLMs to review it.

shell0x··on Got an Old Kindle? It Might Not Work Anymore
i guess that would be an iPaid air as it just got refreshed?
shell0x··on Got an Old Kindle? It Might Not Work Anymore
I’m thinking to get a device for reading technical books. Do you think an iPad mini would be the better option? I had a kindle before but it was slow to change pages and I heard even new versions are still not great for PDFs, but would like to get some opinions.

I have a friend at Apple so wouldn’t pay the full price for an iPad.

shell0x··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
Sorry, I meant the border security. I’ve generally had a good time in the US, but when you’re already get treated like crap just getting into that country, I’d rather avoid it. Plus places like the UAE don’t require any visas for transit so it’s straightforward!
shell0x··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
The biggest risk for tourists visiting the USA is the high crime rate and the fact that crazy people are allowed to carry guns. This is an actual risk to my safety and part of the reason why I don’t even want to visit America again.

From a German perspective, the USA is the country with the craziest laws and UAE, Singapore, Thailand and Japan all sound better to me.

shell0x··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
Very racist comment. They’re not all the same and this article is about Dubai, not Qatar.

The UAE is the most open country in the ME and even allows gay people which is not legal in Qatar

shell0x··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
I’d pick low taxes first. I lived in Singapore, Hong Kong for years and Dubai for few months and it’s significantly safer and cleaner. Taxes are low, law is enforced.

You don’t need freedom of speech if a place is well run. Look at Europe and America. Everyone has an opinion and nothing works properly

shell0x··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
I also refuse to connect through the USA. Dubai is a much better place. At least i don’t get interrogated by a random TSA agent on a power trip.
shell0x··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Regardless if it's Switzerland, Germany or the USA. Everyone has better than we have in Australia. I can't wait to go back to Asia after citizenship to join the developed world again.
shell0x··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
I highly doubt that. As a German who lived in Asia and now Australia, this is the most incompetent country. They can't get anything right. I live in the city of Sydney and can only get 1 Gbps down and 200 mbps up for 109 AUD a month. I lived in 2017 in Singapore and the internet was already better than that for 1/3 of the price.

Australia seems to be pretty backwards in general though.

shell0x··on If you don't opt out by Apr 24 GitHub will train on your private repos
Shouldn’t this be “Tell HN”?
shell0x··on AirPods Max 2
Noise canceling headphones are absolutely a game changer. I work from home in a very noisy downtown apartment with poor soundproofing and I’d never get anything done without ANC. I haven’t had the chance to try the AirPods Max yet, but I do wonder how it compares to the Sony headphones.
shell0x··on Palestinian boy, 12, describes how Israeli forces killed his family in car
I think the middle eastern conflicts are a tragedy. That said, this story does not belong on HN. As others called out this is a tech community and while there is sometimes an overlap with politics, it should at least be somewhat related like mass surveillance or AI being used for war.

HN is one of the most informative and least toxic communities and I’d appreciate if it would stay this way.

shell0x··on How I write software with LLMs
Isn't that what Amp code essentially does? I've used Codex and Claude Max but I keep going back to Amp https://ampcode.com/models

It uses different models for different modes.

I just find it to be faster and it often gets things right at the first attempt, but YMMV.

shell0x··on Polymarket gamblers threaten to kill me over Iran missile story
Is there a trustworthy independent source? I don't trust anything coming from Iranian or Israeli news outlets.
shell0x··on Possible US Government iPhone-Hacking Toolkit in foreign spy and criminal hands
Trump ruined America's reputation forever imho.

He keeps changing his mind every day and keeps talking bullshit. At this point the trashy drug dealer trying to sell to school kids is more reputable than the USA

shell0x··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
We need China more.
shell0x··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
Exactly just because the dictator was horrible doesn’t give the US the right to attack other countries. I see no difference between Russia, Israel, America. They’re all hostile countries which should be sanctioned for human rights violations and violating international law.
shell0x··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
Israel is a horrible human rights abusing country. Why would you support that?
shell0x··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
The EU should do more to move away from being dependent on america . America is a hostile nation and should be treated like Russia and China.
shell0x··on Qwen3.5 122B and 35B models offer Sonnet 4.5 performance on local computers
I found that as well. It replaces American propaganda with Chinese propaganda.
shell0x··on Qwen3.5 122B and 35B models offer Sonnet 4.5 performance on local computers
As an European, I trust China more than America. China doesn't just start bombing other countries and causes regime changes.
shell0x··on Qwen3.5 122B and 35B models offer Sonnet 4.5 performance on local computers
What's the problem with Chinese models? The models are already open which makes them more trustworthy than the American closed models.
shell0x··on Qwen3.5 122B and 35B models offer Sonnet 4.5 performance on local computers
I have a Mac Studio with 128GB and a M4 Max and I'd recommend it. The power usage is also pretty good, but you may not care if you live somewhere where energy is cheap.
shell0x··on Qwen3.5 122B and 35B models offer Sonnet 4.5 performance on local computers
Can't wait to try that out locally. Keen to reduce my dependence on American products and services.
shell0x··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
Singapore is also a very young country though, so it's not fair to compare to Germany. You do have a point though that there is not much out of the box thinking. I found that to be higher in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
shell0x··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
It’s still a significantly better place to live than America or Europe though.

> It's a barbaric totalitarian state that hides it well.

The same can be said about the Us which stirs up wars in other countries, kidnaps other countries presidents and has ICE arresting kids.

I’d pick Singapore over the US any day of the week.

shell0x··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
It’s not okay but I’m not moving to THEIR country and tell them how to run it. Most people want to live their life and safety and taxes are major factors affecting quality of life
shell0x··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
They don’t execute your kid for smoking pot.

“Any Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident found to have abused drugs overseas will be treated as if he/she had abused drugs within Singapore. Consumption of a controlled drug is an offence and a person may face imprisonment of a minimum of 1 year and up to 10 years, or a fine not exceeding S$20,000 or both.”
