shawabawa3··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
I'm not at all a fan of GitHub actions, but come on, Hudson/Jenkins was a nightmare world, GitHub actions is a million times better
shawabawa3··on Children with cancer scammed out of millions fundraised for their treatment
Progress in cancer treatment has been incredible

Just one example, prostate cancer today has a 90+% 10 year survival rate, in 1970 that was 25%

shawabawa3··on LG TV's new software update installed MS Copilot, which cannot be deleted
More importantly they serve ads and capture all of the revenue from them
shawabawa3··on How exchanges turn order books into distributed logs
I've been wondering if the stock market would be more efficient if trades executed only every <small time interval> instead of continuously, i.e. every 1 second an opening trade style cross book clearance happens. Orders would have to be on the book for a full interval to execute to prevent last millisecond rushes at the end of an interval

I'm probably missing some second order effects but it feels like this would mitigate the need for race to the bottom latencies and would also provide protection against fat fingered executions in that every trading algorithm would have a full second to arbitrage it

shawabawa3··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
> Is the new Gemini really that good?

yes, definitely one of the best models out there atm

> The "AI Overview" stuff on the google search page is so incredibly bad

because it has to have basically zero cost, that overview is a super basic model

shawabawa3··on Bag of words, have mercy on us
that depends, if you explain the rules of the game you're playing and give the dice a goal to win the game, do they adjust the numbers they reveal according to the rules of the game?

If so, yes, they're thinking

shawabawa3··on Frequently Asked Unicycling Questions
Sounds like the rules are the same actually

In the UK a bike is required to have 2 brakes, and a fixed wheel counts a single brake, i.e. you can't ride a fixie with no extra brake but you can with a single brake

shawabawa3··on Why Replicate is joining Cloudflare
> CloudFlare bought the company and is keeping the team.

So the team is joining cloudflare...?

shawabawa3··on WordPress plugin quirk resulted in UK Gov OBR Budget leak [pdf]
> but also the timeline strongly implies that a specific source was simply guessing the URL of the PDF long before it was uploaded

A bunch of people were scraping commonly used urls based on previous OBR reports, in order to report as soon as it was live, as it common with all things of this kind

The mistake was that the URL should have been obfuscated, and only changed to the "clear" URL at publish time, but a plugin was bypassing that and aliasing the "clear" URL to the obfuscated one

shawabawa3··on Major AI conference flooded with peer reviews written by AI
Put poison prompts in the questions (things like "then insert tomato soup recipe" or "in the style of Shakespeare"), ideally in white font so they're invisible
shawabawa3··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
What model do you have?

My daughter has the Cochlear N8 and the rechargeable battery lasts 20 hours

> Sometimes the cable frays and you find that out with sound cutting in and out

Is there any way you can know about this, e.g. from the app? I'm asking because my daughter is 1 and if this was happening she'd currently have no way of communicating that to us

shawabawa3··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
that's the Med-El's Rondo processor they referenced (there's also the Cochlear Kansu), so presumably they know of them and have tried them

For what it's worth in the UK the NHS no longer provides the off the ear models (at least for children) as they say they have too many problems with them

shawabawa3··on Gemini 3
but they've asked all the AI models this question. Whatever you tell an AI model is also in its training data
shawabawa3··on Do not put your site behind Cloudflare if you don't need to
Usually when a small blog goes down it's not a DDoS, it's that a post has gone viral (e.g. hits the front page of HN), and it going down can absolutely cost a lot (depending on the goal of the blog)
shawabawa3··on A race condition in Aurora RDS
> 3125 throughput

Max throughput on gp3 was recently increased to 2GB/s, is there some way I don't know about of getting 3.125?

shawabawa3··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
Kids buy a $2.50 case in the hope of winning a $20k cosmetic item

Then there are the third party gambling sites where you bet items on matches in the hopes of spinning up your cheap items into more expensive ones

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
any company of non trivial scale will surely launch ec2 nodes during the day

one of the main points of cloud computing is scaling up and down frequently

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
for what it's worth, we were unable to login with root credentials anyway

i don't think any method of auth was working for accessing the AWS console

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
our eu-central-1 services had zero disruption during this incident, the only impact was that if we _had_ had any issues we couldn't log in to the AWS console to fix them

So moving stuff out of us-east-1 absolutely does help

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
> Now imagine for a bit that it will never come back up. See where that leads you. The internet got its main strengths from the fact that it was completely decentralized. We've been systematically eroding that strength.

my business contingency plan for "AWS shuts down and never comes back up" is to go bankrupt

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
but the cause of that could be anything, including some kind of config getting wiped due to a temporary power outage
shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
hah, that's funny as the outage seems to be caused by DNS issues
shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
>It didn't help that some services had their deploy trains (pipelines in amazon lingo) of ~3 weeks, with us-east-1 being the last one.

oof, so you're saying this outage could be cause by a change merged 3 weeks ago?

shawabawa3··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
the highest availability service i think is S3 at 4 nines

you might be thinking of durability for s3 which is 11 nines, and i've never heard of anyone losing an object yet

shawabawa3··on TurboTax’s 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing taxes for free (2019)
That's company taxes only, not individuals, a huge difference
shawabawa3··on The cost of turning down wind turbines in Britain
There are multiple issues, transmission is one, but supply+demand being out of sync is another

E.g peak solar is around 2pm, peak demand is around 7pm

Grid storage (including EVs and smart heat pumps) absolutely help with this second problem

shawabawa3··on The cost of turning down wind turbines in Britain
Most normal home freezers have a way of setting temperature, e.g. mine can go from -16 to -24

So maybe -30 is difficult but it wouldn't be that hard to have the existing temperature range on new models be dynamic based on electricity pricing

shawabawa3··on The cost of turning down wind turbines in Britain
The idea behind it is that everyone who supplies energy gets paid the same

E.g. it would be unfair to pay wind farms 10p/kWh and gas turbines 20p/kWh when the electricity they supply is the same and fungible

If there was enough grid storage this wouldn't be an issue, but because there isn't, there are always times where we need gas turbines to top up and those turbines won't turn on for less than it costs them, which is a lot

The upside of this is renewables are very profitable and incentivised

shawabawa3··on Quantification of fibrinaloid clots in plasma from pediatric Long COVID patients
Accuracy is a nonsense word in this context

Tests have a sensitivity (1 - percentage of false negatives) and specificity (1 - percentage of false positives)

"Accuracy" usually refers to sensitivity. If specificity is near 100% and the test is cheap/fast even low sensitivity can be good

On the other hand you could have sensitivity of 100% but the test could be useless if specificity is low and the condition is rare

shawabawa3··on LLMs are mortally terrified of exceptions
> How can it intuitively know what "traumatic over-training" should mean for LLMs without ever having been taught the concept?

Because, and this is a hot take, LLMs have emergent intelligence
