sharth··on Ground Collision Avoidance System ‘Saves’ First F-16 in Syria
The article says that 1. The pilot is first notified that the system is about to take control. and 2. That the pilot can override the system at any time.

Red Hat also is supporting it for the next 6 years (or possibly 9) due to it being part of RHEL 6.
sharth··on Ask HN: Is Stackoverflow running out of questions and answers?
I've seen comments like this numerous times, but nobody ever links to their high quality questions that have been downvoted.

Could you link to yours?

sharth··on Ask HN: Are you voting?
As your link says, the 15th district no longer exists. It's likely that you are now in the 12th district.
sharth··on Ask HN: Who is on my ballot tomorrow? (US)
1. It's very difficult to tell you what's on your ballot when it's not clear what state you are in.

2. http://ballotpedia.org/ has a list of most of the elections, but certainly not all. For example, it's missing one of the county-wide ballot initiatives for me.

3. If you are in maryland, this website may be helpful: https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/VoterSearch

sharth··on Cuckoo Filters, Practically Better Than Bloom [pdf]
Amortized O(1) is very different from O(1). But I do appreciate the corrections. It seems that I missed or misread some of their paper.
sharth··on Cuckoo Filters, Practically Better Than Bloom [pdf]
A bloom filter's insert function is basically:

    def insert(x):
        for hash in hashes:
            bloom_filter[hash(x)] = true
The downside is that your false positive rate will increase as you insert elements. But, on the other hand, you get the guarantee of no false negatives.

This cuckoo filter has no false negatives or false positives, but their Insert() function clearly can hit a case where it returns Failure.

sharth··on Cuckoo Filters, Practically Better Than Bloom [pdf]
Thoughts:

1. It doesn't appear to have O(1) lookup or O(1) insertion.

2. It appears that this filter can become "full", which is very different from a bloom filter.

3. It appears that this doesn't have false positives on lookup either.

4. I'm not very confident that this has a constant space requirement either.

This seems like something that I wouldn't compare to a bloom filter.

sharth··on Ask HN: Would HN be interested in an adapter, that can prevent BadUSB-attacks?
The USB Condom basically cuts the data ports to the endpoint device. So the host (or device) can't communicate at all.

They seem to be talking about making a device / application that causes a USB port to only talk to keyboards for example (or perhaps they'll get further in and that will become only HID devices).

sharth··on Ask HN: What would you tweak in C to make it a nicer language?
I'm confused by "if that ever comes out". C11 was released 3 years ago.

sharth··on Show HN: Self-hosted project management application
It took 49 seconds for me to load the __landing page__.

It would have been done in 3 seconds (which is still an insanely long amount of time) except that this image: https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png took 49 seconds to load.

Chrome's network panel shows:

    Blocking 27.15 s
    DNS Lookup 0.137 ms
    Connecting 21.76 s
    SSL 20.59 s
    Sending 0.129 ms
    Waiting 78.344 ms
    Receiving 1.252 ms
For a damn 5kb image.

Yeah. I just screwed it up. Apparently you can suspend your own user account.

Which is an incredibly useful option.

But either way, the code is not well-formed. A null reference should never exist in a well-formed program.

I'm not sure what's particularly interesting about this. If IBM has a support contract with any of these companies, they would have to discontinue it as well.
sharth··on My Uber got pulled over by the Denver police – and then things got really weird
When you get to the end of the article, the police officer is presented as being extremely creepy.

From the article:

After the officer gave the citation, he opened the back door again and offered me a “free” ride to the airport. I told him that I had learned while he was gone that the state had just enacted a law allowing Uber. In fact, I referenced that the Governor was proud of it.

I then asked point blank if what I was doing was illegal. The officer didn’t answer my question, said there was some sort of disagreement being discussed about the law and then he told me that the driver had no commercial insurance and that if he got in a wreck and I got injured that there would be no insurance.

He asked again: Do you want the “free” ride or not? I asked him one more time if what I was doing was illegal. He said he didn’t want to debate the law.

Again, he asked: Do you want the ride or not?

sharth··on Preview local websites on any Internet connected device
A significant issue with this website (and a number of other services) is figuring out what the heck you're actually offering.

In this case, after a few minutes, I have no idea. It appears I can upload some sort of website using a node.js application that you provide.

However, websites are written in a variety of languages. Does your tool only support websites written in node.js? What about PHP or python or static websites? I don't know the answer to that question, and that answer is very important to the usefulness of your tool.

sharth··on Ask HN: How will Comcast provide better service for Netflix content?
Previously, Netflix was sending traffic to Comcast through Cogent. This traffic had problems because the link between Comcast and Cogent was saturated to such a degree that packets were dropping.

Today, Netflix now has their own connection to the Comcast network that is not shared with Cogent.
