sharmi··on Ask HN: Free for a month. What to do?
Just another suggestion.

Why not learn something entirely different? Learn about personal finance. Most education systems that I know of do not take this seriously. You will be able to take informed decisions about loans and investments all throughout your life.

How ever an investment is structured, you will be able to see the crux of it and how it really affects your money.

I learnt it free online on Coursera (I think) more than a decade back and even the little that I retain vastly improves my financial decision making skills.

Trust me, as someone who got laid off at 1.5 months into the first job, the way that was handled was a jarring experience. I would vastly prefer the above response.

As you spend more time in the industry, you see lots of badly handled layoffs and some better managed ones. You hear the stories of other veterans and learn a little more.

At some point you realize it is something everyone inevitably goes through and just a part and parcel of working in the private sector. You learn to plan ahead financially and mentally to handle such surprises.

Nowhere here do I talk about quitting (other than in the context of the forced one),

sharmi··on Patreon Lays off 17% of Staff
Consider this in contrast to claiming:

1. We are laying off underperformers to strengthen the company (Has happened)

2. We are laying off poorly performing divisions (again, indirectly foisting the responsibility on the employees, because their division is underperforming)

3. We are laying off to cut costs and keep the company profitable (This may be the truth, but it treats employees like they are replaceable cogs in the machine they can throw out and bring back in any time).

4. Making the employees quit by themselves by creating toxic work environments (recently, forcibly enforcing back to office rules to shed all employees who cannot make it back or prefer remote).

5. Just layoff without any reason, not worrying about the mental health of the leaving employees or the ones who remain.

Just owning up his responsibilities means, the relieved employee atleast does not have to add the stress of "did-I-do-something-wrong" to his/her list of woes. This can sometimes be debilitating.

It also adds to the confidence of the existing employees that the company will do right by them, if it comes to letting them go in the future.

Ideally, no one should get laid off. But companies cannot be forever profitable and the government or no other body is going to bail them out. Considering that, this seems to be a more mature way of handling a terribly difficult situation.

sharmi··on Ask HN: What is the best back end framework in 2022?
Oops.. I intended to answer the original post and somehow answered @deidei. Consequences of trying to type on a phone I guess.. And that made the tone come out all wrong.
sharmi··on Ask HN: What is the best back end framework in 2022?
Django gives basic web framework. Django rest framework gives rest api.

Pl use django spectacular for openapi compatible rest api. Will make feont end code gen easier.

sharmi··on Ask HN: How to monitor periodic short-lived processes?
Cronicle and Healthchecks.io seem great. There are exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.
sharmi··on Ask HN: How to monitor periodic short-lived processes?
I do use system level cron. The problem was in monitoring them. Maybe like the other commentor said, one could parse syslog to monitor.
sharmi··on Ask HN: Will creative people have jobs in 10 years?
This is just the initial impression and it sure does blow you away.

Thats because you are starting with something simple to test it out. As you try to use it on bigger systems, the usefulness goes down.

In fact, it is barely useful when coding in a framework like Django.

OTOH, it is quite useful for repetitive tasks like writing a downloader function or an sql script.

When using external libraries though, the inventiveness of CoPilot can get really tricky, cause it can generate lines of code for the library API that sounds legit but is completely unrelated to the actual API. CoPilot also often adds such innocuous but wrong lines of code when autogenerating multiple lines. So it is always good to take CoPilot code with a huge grain of salt.

Overall though, it is quite useful for one off scripts. So I just treat it like an enthusiastic but highly unreliable assistant.

sharmi··on Ask HN: What's Your Personal Motto?

sharmi··on Ask HN: What are some good keyboards?
I use Mistel Barocco 770 with brown Cherry MX. It is a split keyboard

My only experience before this is a pre-owned Cherry MX Blue. I am quite comfortable with the feedback I am getting from Mistel.

Regarding comfort, I enjoy it more than my Thinkpad t470s keyboard.

I also find that I no longer have the occasional mild pain I have in my wrists and forearms.

There is also a bluetooth version though I have not used that model.

sharmi··on Ask HN: Anyone else constantly forget which SSO service they signed up with?
There are a lot of recommendations here to stop using SSO. Unfortunately, there are enough number of sites that accept only SSO to make it impractical. One could go the route of I-refuse-to-use-any-site-that-does-not-provide-email-auth . This is something I have personally tried and find annoying to see sites that have only SSO (sometimes, only one provider that I do not even use). OTOH, if it something I really need or find interesting I fold and use SSO :(
sharmi··on Show HN: ytcast – cast YouTube videos to your smart TV from command-line
ytcast search functionality is a great feature. When I come across a video that would be interesting for my kids, I cast it on tv. Now I don't need the url to cast, I can just search by the text.

Castnow, mentioned elsewhere in the thread, seems to be able to cast videos saved on the laptop directly. Our usual routine is to copy to pendrive, move to TV and then switch the TV source to usb. This would be a welcome addition.

sharmi··on Impacts of lack of sleep
>I do wonder what happens when sleep is back to normal. Are some effects staying or will eventually everything go back to how it used to be before?

We had twins and sleep was incredibly hard for more than 2years. It took me a few more years to realize that not only was my sleep disturbed, my whole sleep hygiene was messed up and I had picked up several detrimental habits (e.g Late night was the only time I had to myself with no disturbances. I started to stay awake increasingly late into the night). I almost had to relearn how to sleep all over again.

So, yes, It does get better. You may need to put some effort to reclaim it.

sharmi··on Ask HN: What Happened to YouTube Recommendations?
I have no clue but can anecdotally confirm none of the vidoes recommended for me for the past few days are of interest to me.

It seems to be a pattern with youtube though. For a period, it closely mirrors my watch history and I cant stop. I just pile up all those videos onto my Watch Later.

Then it behaves like I am a stranger.

The cycle repeats.(Shrug)

sharmi··on Ask HN: Where are you going to find long-form content online these days?
A cautionary message from someone who used to think long form content equals quality and indepth coverage:

Long form content in magazines still used to have limited pages. So there needed to be a balance between information and prose. So even in long prose, the content was well edited, every sentence brought something important to the table.

Nowadays, on the web, an article could have infinite length without any limits. Less editing skills required and more importantly, the longer you stay on page, the better their metrics.

So the content tends to be way longer with more passages that do not really add anything to the central message. Most of them are approaching novellas in length.

At one point in time, this became such a big time sink for me, I wrote a firefox extension to warn me how long the page was and how long I spent on it. I am a moderately good reader and still some of these articles would typically take 45 mins to finish.

One heuristic I follow nowadays: Before reading, I think about what my purpose of this article is, what I hope to learn from this exercise: (It could just even be entertainment)

A few mins in, I see if this purpose is being fulfilled. If yes, I continue. If not, I just bail out.

sharmi··on Ask HN: What's your current favorite programming font?
JetBrains Mono. Previously <=Fira Code <= Fantasque Sans Mono <= Source Code Pro

When I don't have access to these, Dejavu Sans Mono or Ubuntu Mono

sharmi··on Ask HN: How much was Python used from 1991 to 2006? What for?
In 2005. We used Python to extract video info from websites, preprocessed the data for a video search app.
sharmi··on Half a day of work lost thanks to Microsoft Word
As you had specified in a different response, you did save often. If that didn't help, you could use Google Docs as others have suggested.

A third option is "LibreOffice Writer". I have not lost a doc/sheet on it yet. Even if I shutdown the system with an unsaved doc, the next time I open writer, it will prompt me for recovery. The caveat is, there might be small formatting and alignment differences. When I open a MS doc in Libreoffice, it output is formatted a bit differently but it might not be Libreoffice and might just be because of the different font stack available on my Ubuntu OS. Libreoffice is available for free though. So you can give it a try.

sharmi··on I closed a lot of browser tabs
I use firefox. I open ridiculous amount of tabs. I have had atleast 600+ that I have counted. There is a good chance I have exceeded 1000 more than once, maybe often.

One of the reasons is I keep tabs from previous sessions open through "Recover tabs".

I found that having too many tabs also affects my ability to concentrate, as I get distracted often.

To keep the tab count low, I use Two extensions together: Open Tab Count Resurrected (gives me the count of tabs in current window and across windows, current count: 44/147) Lean Tab Limiter: Limits the number of tabs you can open. This gives me the wakeup call I need when I exceed the number of tabs I have set.

sharmi··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
My kid is doing the donut too! Have fun!
sharmi··on Ask HN: Which book or course gave you an unfair advantage?
* Introduction to Personal Finance (I think, on Coursera)

Personal Finance is one subject that is not taught is any school across the board. Previously, my spouse and I were influenced by whatever the insurance seller peddled as the best.

Post this course, we can identify most bad investments from good ones and have a basic but solid financial plan for the future.

I have taken many courses, but certainly this one has stuck with me. And I took this one a decade back!

sharmi··on Ask HN: I want to quit my job. I have no results for my efforts. Advice?
You are on a steep learning curve. It is good because it means you are learning: tech, tech best practices, about your org, about the product and domain expertise.

On top of that, you got to form lots of new social connections.

Like @disrael aptly put, you are not competing against your peers but those who were not hired.

Observe your peers and recognize that you need to perform like them in a year's timeframes. Not now. Once you change your outlook, it will make it much easier for you to observe and ramp up your learning.

Anxiety is caused when you are able to gauge yourself and your environment. Maybe you are setting yourself work goals when you are spending most of your time learning. It might help you if you can set up learning goals for the next 2 months. That will be a more accurate measure of your productivity.

You can always reexamine your situation after 2 months and adjust your goals accordingly.

sharmi··on Ask HN: Book under 100 pages that changed your life the most?
I think the problem is that a number of books that claim to have direct impact on your life/career are perfectly capable of being written as a 100 page book, but are stuffed with repetition to pad it 300-400 pages. Reading through these can be quite a slog.

Also, to keep up with the marketing machine, the authors churn out a new title every 3 years or so. It would be a few news ideas and lots of ideas from the older books rehashed. It would be much better if the new sections are clearly demarcated in the book. Not sure if the author is to blame though. It might be the publishing house or a general perception among readers that more is better. Shelling out money for a small book might not feel as justifiable for some readers.

What ever the case, at least for the self help books, it would be great if the authors have the liberty to write shorter books. It would save the author's time, the publisher's time, the millions of readers' time, not to mention, reams of paper.

I fell victim to this when in my young naïveté, I believed all books are worth reading. There are a few books in this category that I want to read, but I value my time too much to read them.

While we are at it, I think one of the important aspects of learning is periodic recall to ensure you do not forget what you learn.

Especially this mode of learning tiny bits when you have time implies:

1. You are not part of a rigorous system like school/college that ensures learning has happened.

2. Your learning is not periodically assessed through tests and applied through assignments.

3. It takes lots of effort and discipline to ensure what you learn next builds up on what you learnt previously and not a bunch of random stuff that do not amount to anything much at the end of a year.

So definitely this is a very arduous undertaking.

With all these in mind, Udacity and Coursera offers mini-degrees which are a set of 4 to 5 related courses on a subject. Coursera atleast allows you audit those courses for free.

If anyone has a better suggestion, I would be very interested to know.
