sharklazer··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
The only videos I have seen with downvotes that outweigh upvotes are politically controversial.

I’m surprised they didn’t do this sooner to be honest, thought they’ve been letting news outlets turn them off for some time now.

sharklazer··on Nine governors press U.S. lawmakers to pass semiconductor funding bill
Someone pointing out the truth.

Yeah, somewhere along the line, we decided in America we can have profits without risks. As well, we believe you can make money with nothing more than money itself.

sharklazer··on Things I would like to 3D print
Where?

Making guns at home is as American as apple pie.

sharklazer··on Pfizer's oral Covid-19 antiviral cuts hospitalization, death by 85%
You forgot the best part. They get to patent it and charge 10000 times more.
sharklazer··on How will MIDI 2.0 change music? (2020)
MIDI 2.0 has USB as a pre-req. I’m not sure how this improves things. One of my chief complaints, and why I moved away from USB to an all-midi setup is how interrupts are handled, making USB sometimes unreliable, especially with large setups like mine. MIDI just works and is pretty easy to implement. I’ve never experienced a real limitation. Resolution has its workarounds but honestly isn’t all that limiting.

What does 2.0 offer me that 1.0 doesn’t? I know it has new features, but I want a good argument for those features actually being useful.

sharklazer··on The Facebook Papers may be the biggest crisis in the company's history
Haugen isn’t a whistleblower. She’s being paid by FB likely.

Real whistleblowers go into exile or jail, not the hot seat before congress to advocated for exactly what FB has said it want. Y’know, like Snowden, or Manning. Not like Vindman, Ciaramella, or Haugen, who receive widespread support of everyone.

sharklazer··on YouTube deletes rapper's 'Let's Go Brandon' song claiming medical misinformation
Actually, it was a chief job of the jester to cross the line when other members of the court could not. Jesters, as all court members, had a natural fear of execution, but probably not any higher than any of the other courtiers.
sharklazer··on People who jump to conclusions show other kinds of thinking errors
An experiment based on drawing red or grey balls/fish/things...

You know, this really isn’t a valid experiment. If you do the probability calculations then 2-3 draws is all you need. All this is based on the assumption getting red or grey is high probability, >90%.

This is exactly how distributors do defect testing on lots incoming goods.

sharklazer··on Online abuse: banning anonymous social media accounts is not the answer
> So there is absolutely no link between his murder and seemingly any online activity, but they're still going to use his murder to to justify... harsher punishment for being mean to government employees online? Never let a crisis go to waste I guess.

Hitting the nail on the head.

sharklazer··on Online abuse: banning anonymous social media accounts is not the answer
Nothing. They simply continue to propagate the surveillance state.
sharklazer··on Online abuse: banning anonymous social media accounts is not the answer
But it IS the answer to monitoring what everyone is saying, posting, and doing so the state can have its panopticon.
sharklazer··on U.S. inflation rate rises to 13-year high of 5.4%
AKA, “wishful thinking”.
sharklazer··on U.S. inflation rate rises to 13-year high of 5.4%
> because we can borrow at an interest rate lower than inflation.

I don’t think you understand what it means for the inflation rate to be above the return rate of promissory notes, but the only incentive to buy such notes is to prop the system with the belief this is temporary—otherwise, by definition, you are just throwing money away (sans considerations of ownership).

sharklazer··on Facebook bans, sends C&D letter to developer of Unfollow Everything extension
True, but has this ever not been the case? Pols and Execs alike want great (or at least not bad) sound bites. They perform on an act on a stage.
sharklazer··on Facebook whistleblower hearing: Frances Haugen testifies in Washington – live
Definitely not a "whistleblower"... more like FB-insider political operative.
sharklazer··on Whistleblower to Congress: Facebook products harm kids and democracy
She's not a whistleblower, persay. She's a FB insider who is a political operative pushing for greater government intervention on FB.

Exactly what everyone needs--truth handed down from on high. /s

sharklazer··on ‘Every message was copied to the police’
Oh, indeed, unless you're DJB, never roll your own. I mean you should understand what you're doing and why you're doing it, not leave it up to someone else to make decisions for you. Not that you should re-invent the wheel. :-)
sharklazer··on ‘Every message was copied to the police’

sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
Yes, technically you are correct.

But I hesitate to bring that up, because I don’t believe there is ANY moral ambiguity for the use of firearms for sporting purposes. Ambiguity only arises in the face of human conflict.

I will defend the ownership, possession, use and carry of firearms on the specific grounds that they ARE tools with the express purpose of hurting, maiming and killing. The specific justification in the US Constitution for citizen ownership of arming of a militia. I also oppose the use of professional militaries as I believe they are corrupt. Fundamentally professional armies have an incentive misalignment: fight for pay, not, fight for something “virtuous”. Therefore “don’t bite the hand that feeds”.

Moreover, the rights of the first amendment can only ensured by the use of force, ultimately, by those exercising said rights. The first amendment is meaningless without the second.

We can count the rounds fired this year alone probably number great than the whole conflict in Afghanistan, all lawful use, but I want to highlight that a GUN is useful being a GUN, not a hobby tool for target practice. If it’s merely a sporting device, well then you should be happy when they take away the guns as we still have airsoft and crossbows for sporting purposes.

No, we defend firearms for what they are and justify them on that use: Force, or the threat of force.

sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
Lawful use: 600k-2.5m per year. Gun deaths per year: ~40k. A lot of those being suicide.
sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
1. Most people don’t even understand how a gun mechanically functions. It lives in the realm of magic for most people, despite being mechanically very simple. This base ignorance of the function of a firearm is one of the biggest reasons why firearm-related accidents happen. You might not want a gun, and fine—that’s your stance—but you should know how it works and how to use it.

2. We don’t nuke each other all the time either. But “God made man and Colt made ‘em equal”—the gun is an equalizer.

I think people in America think we’re some united hegemony, believing all the same thing. No. We don’t. We all have different views and are pursuing happiness differently. Sometimes this pursuit leads to injury of someone else’s pursuit of happiness. Guns, along with education, give people the means of preventing and give meaningful deterrence to those who would disrupt their rightful pursuit of happiness.

Also, guns in the US are used nearly a million times a year to prevent violence (CDC, https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/firearms/fastfact.htm...)

Finally, regarding unintentional killings: that’s why I said education on guns in necessary. Regarding unlawfulness: you must have your head in the sand to think a criminal isn’t already committed to breaking the law.

Guns for everyone.

sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
I guess I get systemic downvotes for this.
sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
If it ain’t censorship, I don’t know but this went from front page to page 3 in 5 minutes or less.

This is why I’m growing more and more discontent with HN.

Either it was unpopular with the crowd, or the mods. Either way, though, f** manipulated discourse and whoever is instrumentally responsible.

sharklazer··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
Everyone should own a gun, and most more than 1. If we were to maintain public education (which... just no, please) gun education should be standard.
sharklazer··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
Been using DAWs for 20 years now. Of course they aren’t changing... what even should change? They work, and do what they’re supposed to.

Most plugins these days are stable, and don’t crash. I haven’t had issues in like 10 years honestly. At least if you’re paying for them from groups who have a reputation.

Git for a music project would be detrimental, going to be really honest.

Linux can run things just fine. JACK has been a relatively stable audio platform. RT pre-emption can help. The only issue with Linux I see is software support. But with Apple making some less than stellar choices, I expect linux to become more important to the daw/digital recording ecosystem

One fantastic one that does work well on linux (reaper) also has a scripting interface. Not a CLI but actually more useful.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, but I guess people like believing in fairy tales. I guess everyone will learn the truth about Santa soon, though.
