sharken··on You're Not Losing Fat Because You're Eating Too Damn Much (2016)
It's more like they DO NOT want to believe how small portion sizes are required to consistently lose weight.

Even if there was a device that could scan all food before eating it, they would still exempt some meals with the "do not count" argument.

Rule of thumb, that if a meal is easy and fast to prepare, then it is probably not suited for a diet.

To lose weight you have to do a lot more exercise than you think consistently. And you have to eat a lot less than you think.

Most people just don't have that kind of willpower.

sharken··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
Recent events suggest that Turkey will be the major obstacle to Finlands NATO membership.

But with zero reasonable arguments for blocking the membership, Turkeys position doesn't seem to be sustainable.

sharken··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
Sounds like it. There seems to be two paths due to the due diligence not being done by Musk.

1. Accept the 1bn backout and accept that Musk will look like a fool.

2. Sell enough Tesla stock to finance the deal, while risking a total meltdown of the Tesla stock price.

The lawyers are most likely trying to devise a third option, but it's very hard to see how that can play out.

sharken··on Turkey’s leader opposes letting Finland, Sweden join NATO
Turkey cannot be that stupid that they would deny Finland and Sweden membership of NATO.

But then again Turkey is not the same Turkey that joined NATO back in the day.

NATO diplomats will have their work cut out for them it seems.

sharken··on EU Commission is planning automatic CSAM scanning of private communications
The COVID pass is one such example, it has recently been extended until summer 2023.

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2022...

sharken··on European Commission prefers breaking privacy to protecting kids
We can't have nice things it seems.

Overall EU is a good idea, but total surveillance is a scary, scary concept that must be avoided at all cost, even at the cost of EU as concept.

sharken··on European Commission prefers breaking privacy to protecting kids
This is no different from the outrage with Apple and client-side scanning of your device.

Yes, we should absolutely do everything we can to protect the children. But losing our privacy is not and can never be an acceptable course of action.

There is a frighteningly short distance from giving up privacy due to CSAM, to a full-blown surveillance state.

sharken··on Jeffrey Snover claims Microsoft demoted him for inventing PowerShell
PowerShell is great, period.

Microsoft should acknowledge that PowerShell 7 built on .NET Core needs to be the default with Windows 11 and Windows Server.

That is the greatest PowerShell failure by Microsoft, why build a new PowerShell and then not make it the default.

Yes, i know there are issues surrounding support for .NET Core vs. Windows. I hope that Microsoft will come around and fix this problem in the near future.

sharken··on Why are Covid-19 cases increasing in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Another tiring piece on COVID reporting on yet another variant. We are long past the point where we started to live with COVID, without modifying our way of life.

Lockdowns due to COVID is only possible in oppressive regimes like China or Russia.

If mental health in western countries was measured, it would show a clear improvement the last 6 months.

sharken··on One of Norway's biggest CS players tries playing under a female alias [video]
Great initiative to show how bad things really are.

Gaming where voice is enabled without admins to supervise it, will degenerate into this nearly every time.

Sad state of affairs indeed.

sharken··on We have 48% chance of breaching 1.5°C target by 2026, says Met Office
Absolutely, Don't Look Up and all will be well.

What is required is COVID level energy savings times two or three.

But as long as we can't see the damage being done, there won't be sufficient support to change things in a meaningful way.

That is human nature unfortunately.

sharken··on Leaked SCOTUS Draft Opinion Suggests Imminent Overturn of Roe vs. Wade
Well, you can have both, don't see why that should be a bad thing.

A woman should have full control over her body, this decision is counter-productive.

In my view USA is making a turn for the worse and setting out on a very dark path.

sharken··on Stop Using a Loading Spinner (2017)
Ideally no percentage increase should take more than maybe 10-15% of the total time.

If the website or app consistently violates this, then it is time for a different design.

But more often than not the "Good enough, ship it" wins out and the user experience is suffering.

I can understand that time to market and maximizing profit is important, but at the second version the expectation is that it is improved.

Google was very aware of this with their search engine, so these things matter.

sharken··on Post-incident review on the Atlassian April 2022 outage
You can change leadership, but if culture is the problem, then you're out of luck.
sharken··on 2022 Mac Studio (20-core M1 Ultra) Review
It would make more sense to compare systems with similar price points.

In this case that would mean ThreadRipper systems and not Ryzen.

sharken··on South Africa is being hit hard by Covid again
Absolutely, and the best thing to avoid it is to get the vaccine.

Beyond that there really isn't any meaningful options.

sharken··on South Africa is being hit hard by Covid again
The vaccine prevents serious illness or death, but won't stop the infection or long COVID.

It's really about choosing between being able to live your life normally or limiting it in ways that are not guaranteed to make any noticable difference.

It looks like the former is being chosen, which i think is the right choice.

sharken··on Bill Gates gives Ted talk proposing new global team to quickly prevent epidemics
At the rate of about one epidemic every hundred years or so, time and money would be better spent coming up with solutions for the environment.

Cement with less of a CO2 footprint would be one example.

sharken··on South Africa is being hit hard by Covid again
As long as the elderly and people with comorbidities are among the 30% fully vaccinated, things don't look too bad.

Having a high number of cases is not in itself a problem anymore.

sharken··on Facebook’s big vulnerability
I'd rather have some small device or flying drone that can project images instead of multiple monitors. That would enable a truly mobile office.

Here is an example from 2018:

https://www.seeker.com/gadgets/new-technique-generates-free-...

Wearing goggles is not very hi-tech or comfortable. Am just not seeing this become mainstream anytime soon.

sharken··on Germany's Nuclear Fumble
It's not like Denmark is any better, the Minister of Climate Dan Jørgensen shares the view that nuclear power is bad.

Makes you question if Europe is really able to do anything seriously about the environment.

https://energywatch.com/EnergyNews/Policy___Trading/article1...

sharken··on Germany's Nuclear Fumble
Who would have thought that Trump back in 2018 could so accurately predict Germany's current problems with Russian gas.

It seems more like Germany's leaders back then were more interested in appearing green.

One key quote is this one:

"The green movement is more interested in reducing energy consumption than in reducing emissions."

Which is of course not going to happen, so it makes little sense to wind down nuclear plants across the country.

The right thing to do would be to recognize the error from 2018 and start powering up those nuclear power plants again.

sharken··on Covid May Be Messing with Men’s Fertility, Study Suggests
I'll have to go with clickbait as well, if this was more widespread there would be a lot more news in this area.

The human race have known many serious illnesses over time, but there is no evidence that COVID should be number one on that list.

I see this more as a long drawn out realization that we can live with COVID and those who need better protection can get the vaccine.

Totalitarian regimes will see this as a chance to exert more control over its citizens, while the rest of the world moves on.

It's time to focus on the environment now, which is hard to do when Putin is invading Ukraine.

sharken··on Facebook’s big vulnerability
Well, I can save FB/Meta a lot of money right now.

Goggles and VR/AR won't take off in any meaningful way for the next decade.

sharken··on Chris Lattner on garbage collection vs. Automatic Reference Counting (2017)
To me Garbage Collection in a language makes it easier to work with than a language without.

As an example C# (GC) and Delphi/Turbo Pascal (No GC). Was involved in two projects where the one made in C# became the successful one.

One of the absolute worst things about Delphi was the lack of GC, which took away developer time better spent elsewhere.

Yes, C# had also other benefits, but having a GC is one of the crucial features to make a language popular.

sharken··on Android loses 8% of its global OS market share in five years
Have owned both Android and IPhone, both are great choices. If you want to configure your phone or want to interact with content, I'd say the Android wins.

To me one of the best Android phones is the OnePlus 8T, it has a large effective screen, modest weight and very good battery life.

But the IPhone X and also 13 are very tough phones, that can take a lot of abuse. With panzer glass it's an extremely durable (and fast) phone.

sharken··on Celebrating 40 years of ZX Spectrum
For me the ZX Spectrum is defined by the competition with Commodore 64.

When faced with the difficult decision between Spectrum or C64, i turned to my older cousin for advice.

He recommended the Spectrum so that was chosen. However in hindsight the quirky keyboard, colour clash and less impressive sounds made the C64 look like the superior choice.

Colour clash can be seen in this link: https://www.nomadsreviews.co.uk/post/the-history-of-video-ga...

Still, the Spectrum had some awesome games back then, such as Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy.

sharken··on Biden administration will appeal ruling that lifted Covid mask mandate on travel
The US badly needs a new and progressive president, Biden is trying to hold on to the wrong things.
sharken··on A cautionary tale from the decline of SourceForge
Which is sadly not as intuitive as 'choco install vlc', WinGet really needs to support aliases to become widely used.

Chocolatey does have it's quirks though, there is both a '7zip' and a '7zip.install' package, it's not intuitive what the difference is.

sharken··on I live in locked-down Shanghai – here’s what life is like
You claim 0.3% of the US population have died from COVID, but present no source to back up that claim.

CDC puts this number at 1 million and you can be quite sure that figure doesn't distinguish between deaths from COVID and deaths where COVID was the secondary reason, source: https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#datatracker-home

So it rather feels like an agenda to support unlimited lockdown, which no free democratic country should support given the nature of the COVID virus.

China is free to do as it pleases, but having abandoned the two-term policy for their leader, they are on the same course as Russia is with Putin.

Right now it's COVID, but tomorrow it could very well be the "inclusion" of Taiwan into the Chinese family.

EDIT: Updated due to calculation error, my bad. Still I don't think the 1 million deaths purely from COVID is accurate.
