sharedfrog··on Cultivate the Skill of Undivided Attention, or “Deep Work” (2019)
> If anyone here has solutions that are more than “Just focus”

A bit like telling someone stuck in a wheelchair after an accident to "just stand up", isn't it?

But after a longer period of regular, hard exercise, they just might.

Retraining your brain might take just as long. No "snap out of it" solution is going to work. Write down small goals, improve gradually, persist, feel good when you make progress.

> that admonition is everywhere

Generally speaking, I think it's because this advice is very easy to remember and repeat. Passive voice is easy to spot. Someone reading to look for errors can easily go "Aha! You did a naughty here." because they were once told that "passive = bad".

sharedfrog··on I asked my students to turn in their cell phones and write about it
In this case, maybe (I haven't read the article). But generally, I'd be wary of saying this. It conflates a complex subject to a single, easy answer which, incidentally, abolishes students of any responsibility for their own learning.
sharedfrog··on Ten-Hour Time-Restricted Eating Benefits Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
Absolutely. If we simply said "eat in this period and you'll lose weight!" you'd find someone gorging themselves into an excess of calories.
sharedfrog··on What are your options for cognitive enhancement?
I'm curious: did you try eating in the mornings and fasting in the evenings? Maybe that would be easier for you.
sharedfrog··on Ten-Hour Time-Restricted Eating Benefits Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
If we weighed the known effects of being overweight against the possible harmful effects of intermittent fasting, in all likelihood there's no debate at all.
sharedfrog··on Ten-Hour Time-Restricted Eating Benefits Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
If they measured only weight loss, then yes, it's due to the reduction. But it's important to note that the reduction wasn't forced on them -- it arose "naturally", meaning intermittent might be an efficient strategy to lose weight (e.g. the person wouldn't have the burden of tracking calories).

That's regarding weight loss alone. Various health and cognitive benefits are usually talked about in the context of intermittent fasting, and that seems to arise from being fasted rather than from being in a deficit.

For anyone curious as to how, GNU `shred` can do that. Something like:

`shred --force --zero /dev/sda`

should wipe the whole drive, overwriting 3 times (the default) with random bits and once with all zeroes.

sharedfrog··on If Facebook or Google create their own currency, they can control our lives
While true now, remember that companies used to own armies[1] and territories[2]. Their motives -- shareholder profit -- have not changed. They do and will strive to grow their power.

It's not a stretch from today to imagine living on company-built cities with private security, paying rent and utilities to the company, with contracts and EULAs serving as laws in all but name.

sharedfrog··on Slack enables customers to control their encryption keys in enterprise version
Correct, it won't show if you change your password. For legitimate uses, you export your session keys prior to changing your password.

In Riot (the most prominent Matrix client), you need to log out to change your password. In the current version, you're warned to export your keys if you want to maintain the logs from any encrypted conversations.

sharedfrog··on Lessons learned: writing really long fiction
In my experience, converting to LaTex is hard, but writing in LaTex from the start is trivial. That's how I write my novels, and I don't need more than the occasional \emph{}, \ldots and \chapter{}, and remembering to use `` when opening dialogue. Could you do that from Papyrus Autor?

The printed book you have self-published but without KDP or bulk self-publishers, can I ask how you went about it? Did you take your LaTex / pdf file to a book printer, use some other self-publishing service...?
