Name 1 which works flawlessly. No ads. On a side note, is it possible to port this CLI program to Android or web? My mom needs a downloader and the Firefox ext which I used till now , doesn't work all the time.
sharcerer··on Google’s Rivals Gear Up to Make Antitrust Case
Traditional TV news channels actually have too much power and nobody to question their outright bias. This situation is so bad in India. Nobody questioning them for fake news, doctoring content etc. And in what way,G has "too much power on our news and information.". In my case, the articles in my Google Feed have actually helped me discover many different articles etc. Yes they have too much power but not in News, imo. For news, info it would be Facebook.
sharcerer··on Google explains how it licenses song lyrics for Search, will add attribution
It seems like poor, clickbaity reporting by WSJ

"Recently, a Wall Street Journal reporter proceeded with an article accusing Google of scraping lyrics from Genius and placing them in Google’s search results, despite clear responses from both LyricFind and Google that this was not the case. To address the inaccuracies in the initial article and the reporting that followed, we would like to correct the record in this matter."

sharcerer··on YouTube’s Algorithm Incentivizes the Wrong Behavior
pichai doesn't come off as enthusiastic. I am a heavy Google product user. Watch all the hardware, I/O events etc, I have seen him use the same sentences multiple times over the past 2 years across events. I get that he won't exude the same charm, excitement as a founder-CEO, nevertheless a lot is left to be desired. A lot of his public statements feel like carefully crafted PR responses. Nothing wrong with crafted responses. When you are a 800 Billion$ company, you gotta be careful, but at least try to give off the perception of being authentic. Google is really bad at the perception game. Apple's really good at that. But I have a strong dislike for stupid moves, even more so than bad moves and Google has made lots of those stupid ones.
sharcerer··on Let's make them pay for using our personal data
Some ex FB employees did make this. It was on techcrunch in the past 1 year, I think. Just found it, it shut down.

sharcerer··on Starlink satellite-train visible with the naked eye
I mainly loved the various cultural aspects, differences after the jump. The Red vs the rest. The Red had a Soviet/Chinese vibe.
sharcerer··on Starlink satellite-train visible with the naked eye
I am not so sure about the movie either. Would have loved James Cameron working on it. And yeah,it should be split in 2. The 5000 year jump should be in a separate part.
sharcerer··on Starlink satellite-train visible with the naked eye
that novel was amazing. I loved the 5000 year jump too. Although I found it difficult to visualize some of the futuristic parts. I think a movie is being made based on the novel.

sharcerer··on Consuming Hacker News
I occasionally go to Show, Ask HN. Ask has some really good discussions, advice kind of posts.
sharcerer··on Show HN: Scar – Static websites with HTTPS, a global CDN, and custom domains
that's a bummer. I thought now that we have private free repos, websites could be hosted there. Still nice feature. I guess, the public nature definitely generates some trust and also is a good way of showing your work as Github works like a project showcase platform too.

Fastai is also working on S4TF integration in the future. Here's Jeremy Howard's blogpost on WHY Swift?

Edit: I apologise, just after posting this comment I saw this link had already been posted. https://www.fast.ai/2019/03/06/fastai-swift/

sharcerer··on SpaceX nails triple booster landing after satellite delivery
The way I see ot, ot goes both ways. He has taken a lot of shit for Tesla,SpaceX so obviously when something good happens then too he gets a lot. The dynamic is a bit similar to actors/actresses in movies. If it flops, nobody is blaming the makeup artist, dialogue writer. Btw, i do find some things related to Elon's life overglorified(those parts do not involve SpaceX,Tesla) BTW, read this thread about Tom Mueller. https://mobile.twitter.com/mekkaokereke/status/1081619342377...

Really inspiring. This thread got picked up by many news sites. I just googled "spaceX engineer lumberjack" to find this.

sharcerer··on Lambda School (YC S17) now pays eligible students $2k/month
Cool. Thanks. For me, the study materials , curriculum is not the hindrance. Being among like minded individuals, getting internships is the problem. If you think about it every education institution which develops into a brand has 1 key thing. Great, ambitious students and matching support. That's what I want. To be part of respectable group of individuals. Now, I know this might not fit the DNA of Lambda School, but, i think a new service where students submitted an application along with their work, projects and the site listed these students ( with very strict vetting to identify unique students, with their unique skillset mentioned) and partnered with companies for internships ONLY (no jobs )in the beginning. As the validation of the students skillset would start to take place in 1-2 years, the brand would gain recognition like Lambda. A small upfront application fee would be charged.
sharcerer··on Lambda School (YC S17) now pays eligible students $2k/month
Austen, I was wondering if you would consider some online version of Lambda for regions where Lambda isn't there. I don't mean the academic part, but the hiring part. Sort of an evaluation of a student's skills to see if they are on par with those educated by Lambda Faculty. On the basis of those evaluations/tests/ projects , you can use your network to get those people jobs/ internships. For eg: I am from India. Currently in a 2nd tier college. Learning ML,NN, Data science and am doing Kaggle currently. But, college CGPA and college name is a major hindrance while getting internships. Am thinking of dropping out after 2nd year, because it's a huge waste of time.

sharcerer··on Ask HN: Is there a step-by-step guide on how to create a successful startup?
Got it. Will be taking this year's online Startup School by YC starting in July. Thanks.
sharcerer··on Ask HN: Is there a step-by-step guide on how to create a successful startup?
What's your opinion on so many Startup books apart from Lean Startup, Zero to One. Should one read the typical 4-6 usually recommended or are there some hidden gems not talked about much? Though, personally I feel that after reading 2-3 books, rest of the bits can be acquired by the occasional blogposts. Also, these periodic blogposts are sometimes better as they help in reinforcing ideas/ important pointers which one might forget after reading a book. One aspect of books which can't always be replicated in blogposts are the case studies.
sharcerer··on AR Will Spark the Next Big Tech Platform: Call It Mirrorworld
To circumvent this, I think it would be great if user had to option to make a geofence. Like they could enable their Contact details being detected in a Conference/Meetup? networking event,as the person himself/herself will benefit from this. Then, outside a particular location your ID gets locked down sort of like location based -Smart Lock in smartphones.
sharcerer··on Show HN: Threadbase – Make a HN-style community in minutes. No coding required
I saw your communities section, but before seeing that I had an idea. You could start an aggregator of communities which used ThreadBase. The owners of these communities could make their community paid or invite based or referral based like invite 10 more people to get free access or X amount of days. hours access to content. Also, if you start getting lots of communities then you can have them pay for placement/promotion on top of page. Basically, individuals could have their own Threadbase and share news content which they consume or their views on Threadbase. Like when on twitter let's say Paul Graham/ Naval post an article, some discussion starts. But, there is a lot of visual fluff like like, share, retweet buttons which reduces amount of content one can view at once. the Hacker News/Reddit style of UI is good for such discussions.

EDIT: I wrote all of this just by saying the title of your HN post here, now when I went to your site, I saw that you have Private communities planned. Nice.

sharcerer··on Show HN: Kopi – safeguard your email address and help manage the email firehose
1 more benefit of different pseudo-emails for each service is that when large collections of email, passwords are leaked then hackers can't apply same email to different services as each service would have a different account. This could safeguard users from situations like the recent Collection 1 leaks. I think you should list this as a benefit. Though if I make amazon-myname@kobi, twitter-myname@kobi then hackers can obviously try to guess the email, but still would be more work for them.

Basically, in 1 sentence, the benefit is that, till now, aware users followed the obvious rule of different passwords for each service and then use a password manager to manage all. But, a much better norm would be different email AND password for each service. this part is important: DIFFERENT EMAIL AND PASSWORD. I want this to become a norm in the next 1 year. By norm, I mean I want some big players to implement this as well. Also, good work on kopi. What are your thought on bulc.club ?
