shanghaiaway··on Great Wall Motor unveils $9k electric urban car with nearly 200-mile range
Indeed. The free market is a concept only applied to other countries, never to the US.

So at less than an programmer salary, what you're saying is that there's ample opportunity for enterprising software artists to take over and automate the whole thing.

He should get his own house ready. Stop abusing employees and managing like a tyrant, and start paying market wages.
shanghaiaway··on Wan Gang pushed China to leapfrog the West in electric vehicles
Looks alright but BYD is better and owns the market.
shanghaiaway··on Wan Gang pushed China to leapfrog the West in electric vehicles
BYD is #1 in quality as well.

Leapfrog here is a term used to describe a fact. Chinese companies have leapfrogged ICE manufacturers in EV.

shanghaiaway··on Wan Gang pushed China to leapfrog the West in electric vehicles
Consider that BYD electric buses are #1 worldwide.
shanghaiaway··on It’s probably time to learn Chinese
Africa is not a country.
shanghaiaway··on It’s probably time to learn Chinese
China will pass the US as the largest market within five years so what I'm saying is certain to happen.

Sure, as a regular boring American 9-5er you won't need it but if you want something more from life you better learn a language and Mandarin is objectively going to be the most useful.

shanghaiaway··on It’s probably time to learn Chinese
50 years from now, Mandarin will be much more useful than Arabic or French, because it will be the largest market in the world. If you deal with China professionally, knowing Mandarin will be an advantage.

shanghaiaway··on Discord raises $150M, surpassing $2B valuation
This is just a bunch of random points added together. You have the confidence of someone fully ignorant of the subject matter.

The equation is relatively simple. Out of everyone that visits your online store, a small % will make a purchase. You can can both optimize quality and quantity of traffic. For traffic, you need to keep it coming every day, through out the year. Discord has that returning traffic/users. Game publishers do not.

shanghaiaway··on Discord raises $150M, surpassing $2B valuation
Wrong. Stores need traffic, which is why they locate on shopping streets, in large malls, offer large discounts at times and use loss leader products, and buy advertising.

Discords user base is traffic.

shanghaiaway··on Discord raises $150M, surpassing $2B valuation
I'd be more bearish on the stores of Origin, Epic, Ubisoft. Building a user base has to be done bottom up. Companies in general cannot do that because their approach is a forced top down one, pushed by marketing and sales.

I think it's fair to believe that Discord can be one of two stores together with Steam. Other publishers are likely to fail.

shanghaiaway··on Google’s Secret China Project “Effectively Ended” After Internal Confrontation
It's controversial because Google made such a big deal of not running a search engine in China, and built their corporate brand on top of that conviction.
shanghaiaway··on Netflix’s Movie Blitz Takes Aim at Hollywood’s Heart
You don't really explain why. The why is that before MCA, the studios directly employed actors, directors, writers. They were vertically integrated and held all the power. After MCA and CAA, the talent broke out and negotiated with studios on a project basis. And, instead of getting salary, they started getting a percentage of gross office revenue. They sort of went from employee to startup co-founder because they owned a stake of the film. The power dynamics since then are completely different.
shanghaiaway··on China’s Economy Slows Sharply
You're clueless
shanghaiaway··on China’s Economy Slows Sharply
You should be interested in reality rather than projections. Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Huawei, etc. are corporate entities separate from the Chinese government.

shanghaiaway··on How Premium Mediocre Conquered Fashion
The author runs a forum and magazine dedicated to "fashion goth" designers like Rick Owens. He's a bit too close to the subject because his essay lacks distance and the analysis you provided. And like you say, this isn't new - it's just aspirational branding.
shanghaiaway··on Why New York Subway Lines Are Missing Countdown Clocks (2015)
The hyperloop won't do anything because it will never exist.

The distance between Tokyo and Narita Airport is the same regardless of mode of transportation.

shanghaiaway··on Huawei Reveals the Real Trade War with China
What you call normalization is submission to US values and power. No nation wants to do that. The difference is that China is powerful enough to go their own way.

As long as you call it normalization you will remain unhappy.

shanghaiaway··on Aggregators and Jobs-to-be-Done
No it's not. The user communicates with Uber. The driver communicates with Uber. Uber matches the two. Uber charges the user for the fare. There is not even a little bit of peer to peer activity going on.
