shafyy··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
Fundamentally, housing should not be a free market area that is profit-driven. Housing, like energy, food, healthcare and public transport is a basic need.

Therefore, government policies making sure people with lower income can still get housing in a city they grew up in, where they work, live and have family, is important.

Yes, one part of this is also building new housing and making sure that housing is built efficiently in terms of cost (but not throwing them on the free market, but making sure a certain % of it is desginated as social housing).

shafyy··on OpenAI's Only Ethicist Reportedly Left Last Month
> High rents are created by high local productivity.

Wrong. High rents have many reasons and also good policies to get them down and have affordable housing for more people, also in otherwise expensive and popular cities.

shafyy··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
No we shouldn't. Nuclear waste is not and will never be solved. Nuclear meltdowns are real. Also, nuclear is more expensive than wind and solar.
shafyy··on Zed DeltaDB
But Zed has taken a shit ton of VC money, so Zed needs to grow exponentially. So, Zed needs to make stuff that they shove down their customer's throats and can make more money with. Therefore, Zed can't justify just focussing on the basics. This makes me zad.

Great post and congrats on your Einbürgerung =)

100% homage. Larry David plays with recurring jokes all the time (e.g. see his new series on HBO now) which makes it even funnier.

shafyy··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
> Reminder that the Bun's Zig-to-Rust rewrite took 11 days with dozens of agents working 24/7 and the author put the cost they'd pay (if they had to pay) at about $168k.

Does anybody really believe that it only took 11 days, one engineer and $168k in tokens?

shafyy··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
Isn't it all speculation always though? That's why stock picking doesn't work and ETFs are popular.
shafyy··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
I really hope it's a scam, because if not, and this is allowed to exist, we're fucked.
shafyy··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
And rightly so
shafyy··on Waymo Premier
Caning is absolutely against basic human rights, so no. It won't make Oakland and SF safer, it will only make society more divided and worse off.

Go ask and minorities like Indian slave workers how safe and secure they feel in Singapore...

shafyy··on Waymo Premier
Singapore is a highly authoritarian place where caning is legal punishment. I would not call this normal, but rather "absolutely insane lmao".

Comparing Elon Musk, a rich kid that got lucky by investing his money in to "cool shit" with some of the most significant scientists and mathematicians of humankind is just wrong.

Perfectly demonstrating that we need regulation to protect the general public, most companies will not do the right thing but the thing that benefits them first and foremost.

shafyy··on Tech CEOs are apparently suffering from AI psychosis
There are new buzz words every two months. Remeber yesterday when everbody was throwing around RAG?
shafyy··on Steve Wozniak cheered after telling students they have AI – actual intelligence
People are not excited because those companies blatantly disgregard the law, exploit and fuck people over and try to concentrate as much power as possible in their hands. Young people are not stupid, they can see that the increasing wealth gap makes their lives suck more. And they also understand that AI is a hypercapitalistic tool, that, if left unchecked, will only accelerate this trend.

So yes, that kind of curbs the enthusiasm, doesn't it?

Dude. If it weren't for unions, you would be working 70 hours each week for a shit pay and would even have less employee rights than you have not (assuming you live in the US, based on your dismissive comment against unions)
shafyy··on Teaching Claude Why
You might be in the 1% gloablly, but probably not in the country you are living in?
shafyy··on SpaceX wants to launch a million satellites
Jesus dude
shafyy··on Teaching Claude Why
Could also be possible today, but we chose a capitalistic system that leads to an increasing wealth gap. And now we're in a situation where the richest 1% own 50% of the wealth.

So, if we increase automation and the ownership structures stay the same, this inequality will get worse, not better.

> Sure, much like how email is decentralized in theory but barely is in practice.

Hard disagree. Email is very much decentralized. Doesn't mean that there's still a long tail distrubtion, but its not like 99.999% of email accounts are on Gmail. And I can set up an email account in a few minutes and by choosing from a list of thousands of providers all over the world.
